I hope ME 4's NPC's don't look ugly like in Dragon Age Inquisition

Female characters from The Witcher 3 are a good example of attractive and realistic women.

-Witcher snip-

Both of whom are sorceresses and alter their appearance with said magic.

If you're going to mention The Witcher, at least play fair and throw in the game's warriors.  I'd also post a shot of Birna Bran as a quasi-comparison with Josephine, but I can't seem to find an in-game shot anywhere.

I think they look rather boring compared to the women in DA:I. Flawless faces and skin, modern day make-up, nothing that I don't see in any other magazine, TV show, etc.

I don't think Triss looks boring but I agree. I actually thought Yen looked disappointing after hearing so much about her in the other games. Her eyes are noteworthy but otherwise I feel like she just looks like a good-looking women prettied all up and stuff... well, okay, she dosn't actually need to look quirky or special but yeah... very ordinary and somehow I was expecting something different.

In the end I care more about character than visual design but it's not like the latter doesn't have an impact.

I'd like to see females with feminine faces, actually. DAI missed the mark by quite a good margin, it seems. Most ME females were butt-ugly, too, mostly due to poor modeling, i think, with Liara being a rare exception(LotSB Liara was very impressive). TW3 seems okay, fitting with the general setting of a Middle Ages world.

Maya Brooks is cute. Especially with that dorky little Alliance hat (the model they based her off on even more beautiful though). Would be cool to see her again in a new engine.

Sometimes the face scanning models are hit and miss. I think Liara and Jack are the best looking without many hitches (err...for males it's Kaidan and Sheploo).

I'm not playing America's Next Top Model RPG made by BioWare.. I thought this was Mass Effect.  I don't mind the attractive or unattractive characters... It's freaking polygons!

Why is it always "just pixels" or "just polygons" when it comes to the attractiveness of females in videogames but it is never just polygons when we are talking about other visuals of videogames? It isn't like we are saying that we want to date or even have sex with one of the characters, just saying that while we are playing the game, we would also like something attractive to look at.

While I have been blown away with beautiful characters in video games, like Brooks as she is known in ME3 -- I don't necessarily plan games because I find a particular male or female good looking in the game.

I understand you don't want ugly beastly looking men and women.  But NOT every in-game character is going to be sexy.  Play one of those dating sims lol.  They are actually quite fun, my buddy has one for the PSP... Or is it Vita?  Idk.. But he has a dating sim lol.

PS -- Dr Chakwas is kinda hot for an old doctor though lol.

I actually don't think Brooks is all that attractive, IRL or in game.  Face is waaaaaaaay too long.

I thought the DA:I characters were pretty ugly.  Cass was meh, Jose was hideous, Sera was too.  Viv was OK.  the only pretty ones were Leliana and Morrigan.  Oh and the scout dwarf, what's her name, was kinda cute.

I go out and I see nice looking to outright beautiful women everywhere, quite frankly.  Yes, some are ugly, many are OK looking, but there are quite a lot of attractive women around.  Maybe the same is true of guys, but I don't know what women find attractive in men, so I can't comment on that.

Same here.

I will say though before I bail, I didn't care for the hair models and the face animations. Mo-capping and face scanning numerous models/actors would be cost prohibitive in Mass Effect or Dragon Age, but it would look so nice.

Let's take a look at player created characters from Skyrim(just pulling the first decent of what i find, there are many characters that are way better):

MORE(like, really a lot...):

Spoiler

Compared to these works of amateurs the character designs from DAI can't hold up well, IMO. I'll spare the harsh words i wanted to write about DAI down at this time, but I really would like to see at least one female character who is beautiful in body and mind, maybe a scientists like Liara was(her LotSB version concerning her visuals) - fairly pretty, smart, self-controlled and with genuine interest for the things she does. If other people prefer something like Sera or a manlier female like Cassandra - fine, they can get another character suited to their tastes.

While I don't agree with the premise that DAI characters were ugly, the two franchises have never looked the same.  I've always thought that the Mass Effect games had better character models.

Some of those look not only way too much like models, but models in photoshopped images. I don't think most of those would make a good template for what female characters should look like in RPGs. That isn't to say that some characters can't be designed to be attractive, but your space soldier shouldn't look like Irina Shayk on a Sports Illustrated shoot.

Please consider that not every female character should be a soldier(this is actually a huge logic fault on your part) and also that soldiers do have a certain specialization - a female medic working at the base doesn't have to go hulk mode and chug testosterone pills to fulfill her role. Same goes for radar and drone operators, military analysts and similar roles.

Presumably most, if not all of the main cast would either be soldiers or some similar role that grants them a backstory of combat prowess. Otherwise their inclusion would not make sense and would strain suspension of disbelief.

As for soldiers...rear echelon personnel are not held to different standards. A medic at some field hospital in the rear would not have long flowing hair blowing in the breeze, and looking like she has a staff to do her hair and makeup before going to work.

I'm all for characters being attractive if it is appropriate for that character, but their appearance should also match their role. A female soldier for example should have her hair tied up in a bun and she shouldn't be wearing a lot (if any) makeup. Now if you have a character who is the equivalent of Khalisah al Jilani and Emily Wong, thats a different story.

Are those supposed to 1) be attractive and 2) look like real people, because none of them do.

I think some people have spent too much time looking at airbrushed, heavily made-up models under perfect lighting conditions, anime art, and the like.

Excuse me, but this is grasping at straws. If you remove the makeup, the faces are still fairly nice looking. It's just a specific detail about Skyrim modding - a lot of customization can be done with textures and hairstyles(ie seemingly changing face shape without actual geometry change) and people use this to full extent.

Please take a look at the second person from the right:

Looks pretty, is a soldier, hair in a bun, no makeup.

Oh snap, another one. She even wears makeup, hory sheet, impossibru!

Well... You get the picture, hm?

There is a ton of other similar images of US, Israeli, Russian and Chinese good-looking military women on the internet. No reason not to feature good looking female characters in a sci-fi game.

Skyrim is a fantasy game, the characters are made by amateurs(actual players, not well-paid "professional artists") - not looking like "real"(i guess just average = real) people isn't exactly bad in that setting. Looks better than DAI, though.

Well...they are/do as much as your avatar does.

All this is completely subjective anyway, what I think is hot others might think is meh, and vice versa.  I doubt anything in this thread is going to influence devs/writers one way or the other.  We'll get what we get.

Your argument somewhat falls apart because you ignore all the other women who do not fit what you want - there is a mix, and DA:I has a mix.

Just because they do not meet your standards of beauty does not mean that they do not meet others; furthermore note that defining the female characters by their appearance as opposed to who they are is problematic - especially as the male characters are not generally judged by a similar standard.

The fact that people are complaining about Cassandra's appearance, rather than commenting on what a good character she is is rather worrying if I am honest. It seems to suggest that she could have the depth of a puddle, but as long as she was beautiful it would be ok.

Lol...and yet Cullen and Dorian were prettier than the female characters...

You needn't worry about such.  I mean it's not like people who place appearance above all else is a new phenomenon.  Besides, I'm greedy.  I want Cassandra's awesomeness and depth...and be hot (by my standards.)
