I hope ME 4's NPC's don't look ugly like in Dragon Age Inquisition

You're making the classic mistake of believing that forumgoers represent the majority of anything.

That is only really true for serial posters who are never off the boards.

When you have many infrequent posters saying the obvious "men like attractive women" then there is a very good chance that these comments represent the majority.

Beauty is not purely subjective.

Or that they're just lurkers speaking up. Or that they personally felt strongly enough about the issue to go to a forum and post.

Still does not point to any kind of majority. You could tally up the feedback from everyone who has ever posted on the internet about how Bioware's NPCs look, and you still wouldn't have a statistically significant sample of opinions.

That said, however, it's been a recurring statement I have noted net-wide as well as on my campus.

I will always agree that taking BSN data of any size as a full view is deeply flawed, but this one seems to have reached micro-ME3-ending levels of commentary, so sadly I don't see DAI's fitting-looking women continuing.

Beauty is not purely subjective.

It's not, but attractiveness is.

I've finished DA:I and was never bothered by the female NPCs. In fact, there are some really attractive ladies in the game. Especially Josephine.

Really? I haven't heard any complaints when talking to other people about the game.

Maybe, I'm just getting old and value personality more than physical appearance.

Yeah, I never meant to imply that it couldn't be true, just that none of us have the necessary data to draw that conclusion.

For my part, I don't have strong feelings either way. Not all women need to look like Miranda, but having one in the party every now and then is nice.

Yup, always important to factor in the limited data at our disposal as fans.

I've definitely run into the complaint fairly frequently, on and off the net. Even in NeoGAF forums, I've seen lots of, "I've heard that game is pretty good, but I don't know. Why do those chicks look so scary?" It's pretty... sad.

Like you, I don't really care, haha.

The internet itself (all the forums....from BSN to NeoGaf to Reddit) will never represent the majority. It's really not difficult to comprehend the fact that most people do not sign on to the internet to let their feelings about a particular product be heard. We will never know what the majority of players think about anything.

Whether this is true or not I feel it's a terrible point to make, you could apply the same logic to every point someone makes on these boards as a way to dismiss it.

If we stick with the facts the devs made a conscious effort to make the women look a certain way, a lot of guys on forums aren't that keen on the look of the female LI. No one has done anything wrong

Although I personally believe Cassandra is gorgeous, I get the impression that about half the male audience disagrees. That's what happens when you make a character that is striking. People either love it or hate it. They could have made her look very pretty but bland in which case, we'd all be going "meh..." or made her super slutty, with massive t-ts, pillow lips and long blonde hair and I and many others would be horrified while the current naysayers would be delighted. I have no feelings about Josephine. She is "meh" to me except for the ridiculous Disney Princess dress... thing.... which hurts my eyes.

The point is, they could have made half the people very happy and the other half unhappy or water down her look until no-one is excited. The men all had odd looks as well but they were all memorable characters that people had strong feelings about, which I thinks was a good thing. There were no "safe" Ashley or Kaidan type romance options in this game (although I like both their romances).

Hey, everyone has the right to voice their opinion. More power to you. I don't even necessarily disagree.

It's misrepresenting one's own opinion as the consensus of some silent majority that I have a problem with.

I don't play DA:I.  But from the looks of her, I'd hit that. She doesn't look like most women. That's hot in a way. She does look like the type that wears the pants though. Maybe some dudes aren't into that.

I hope people are making the clear distinction between a character being attractive and the quality of its model.

Cassandra, beautiful or not, is a great model. Clearly good work was put into its creation. And that holds true for many, maybe most, of Inquisition major characters. It was not the strongest part of DAI graphics, but it wasn't a weakness either. It makes me hopeful for ME'4' characters, and not fearful. Especially because the next Mass Effect (if my sacrifices to Jupiter are accepted) won't come out in last gen consoles and therefore will be able to use the power of next gen fully. Something DAI could not.

That said, there were some npcs that made me wonder if I was playing DAO or DA2. And when it comes to graphics, that is a bad thing.

That makes her secret passion so much funnier.

People are just not used to seeing middle-aged women in appropriate armor or in non-revealing clothes in fantasy-RPGs. The lack of boob-armor or cleavage must have shocked some guys. The female part of the fanbase seems to be quite pleased with the design of the women-NPCs. Can't imagine why.

Bioware got a lot of flak for the sexualization the female characters in ME2 and 3. And rightfully so. The character design of Miranda and Samara always bothered me. There are so many better options for their clothing in the artbook.

No you like beautiful women, and it seems that is crazy today in our world for some people, to be normal you should only like ugly and average chicks :P

Lol, yeah kind of, anyways I m a guy I m not gay but I don't mind seeing good looking guys in my games like James, Kaidan or Jacob (well he's a terrible character but that's the writing not his chara design), so it's not just about top model hot females. I just want some very good looking characters in my game, don't try to bring the "realistic stuff" in the game I have enough of this reality in my life everyday.

When you watch a hollywood movie all the actors are nice and hot, guys, females etc, and it's normal because we all like it, people are not saying "hey guys let's get rid of Kristen Stewart and Brad Pitt and replace them by some ugly or average actors because it feels more realistic", why it should be different for videogames ?

As for the agenda, I don't know, the Anita Sarkisian one, the sexist one, the Gaider one because he has clearly a problem with this subject when you talk about hot/good looking females, sex, romances (dwarf romances hello) etc.

But hey whatever, Gaider isn't working for the ME team and I hope he will stay away from it, I m sure Yannick and the Montreal team won't disappoint us, ME1, 2, 3 were great on that aspect. I m only affraid about Ann Lemay because she's a girl and she could have the same opinion as Gaider, but from what I saw in Omega she can write some good and intersting stuff with pretty cool females (I really like Aria and Nayreen) so it will be ok I think, let her write some hot males for her own pleasure and hot females for us guys everyone will be happy :P

BTW changing Ashley's design in ME3 was a great decision, just saying, even Liara looks better in ME3, Jack too.

I have no problem with Ashley's look in ME3 although I do feel her hair should have been pinned up in combat. And I say this as a straight woman. Her original writer, who left BioWare in 2009 and...

Might as well show off his work for ME...

Spoiler

Said...

We can debate details all day, but let's cut to the chase and talk about artistic intent.

ME1 Ashley was interpreted as a soldier who was attractive. ME3 Ashley was interpreted a sex object who carried a gun.

Compare the iconic appearances of her in the two games. Look at the how prominent the eyeshadow and lip gloss become. Look at how she goes from light contoured armor to something that suggests a "little black dress" and shows off her posterior. Look at how her hair goes from a combat-sensible bun to an in-your-eyes glam cut.

The idea that a greater number of people may feel the same was also worded as an opinion. Just the way I feel based on what people seem to like

Where not here to create strawmen or bash what other people may or may not want.

If you feel uncomfortable with Miranda and Samaras appearance that's fair enough but many don't.

Miranda and Samara, Jack and Jacob....their attire is just one of many artistic and aesthetic changes the sequels changed from the original vision of the series. And for lack of a better term, they look stupid. You're going into battle, and you're wearing spandex and a push up bra or a leotard onesie. Sorry, that looks idiotic no matter what battlefield you're on or firefight you're in.

Meh.   I think of Cassandra as taking no **** from anybody about what she thinks about anything.  There may no I in team, but there's no Us in winning.

This. Cass constantly questions her own actions and even talks about how she may be seen as "a madwoman, a fool" for resurrecting the Inquisition. When she later talks about the changes she does and doesn't want to make to the Chantry, she says (paraphrasing) "and I have no idea if wanting any of these things makes them right".

Not knowing what you want seems rather genuine. Also, if she's a woman that takes no **** from anybody, and doesn't pander to what I want....that's not gonna make her any less attractive to me. I kinda dig that.

This has nothing to do with attractiveness or anything, but regarding quality of character I thought Javik stole the show in ME3 due to the fact that he didn't conform to Shepards views or beliefs. He was his own man and didn't give a damn what anybody thought. He kept it real. That's the type of character I want covering my ass. If it's a guy, that's someone I want to have my back. If it's a female, that's someone I could totally get into romantically and I also want having my back.

I don't want some ass kissing lackey by my side under fire or at war.

Some people are really into the "romance" subplots in BioWare games. They want "attractive" ladies for their make-believe girlfriends. It's not a big deal to many, and many found he DAI NPCs plenty attractive, but I'm not surprised to see it complained about on the internet.

Agreed OP I can't believe we went from Morrigan and Leliana to Cassandra and Josephine

Just ugly

But the ME team always knew how to make good looking characters so I don't think there is any need to be afraid

I think Cassandra looks great. Josephine a little less but then again, Leliana was not my style in DAO either.
