Hi!

Since Christmas, I too am finally able to Play DA:I (from me for me, with love), but I find myself somewhat at a loss regarding the combat system.

Maybe it's because I'm too used to DAO and DA2 and the manual doesn't extactly go into detail explaining combat mechanics - anyway, my hope is to get a few pointers from players who already are renowned dragon slayers - or at least know how the game works.

My questions are those:

I'm playing on a PS4 - is there any way to target an enemy with the whole party in tactic mode without having to assign every follower manually to it?

Using shield wall requires me to continuously press a button to build up block - can the characters keep doing that without me directly contolling them?

Do I have to switch between tactical mode and the radial menu every time I want to clear all commands, take a potion, select hold position, etc?

Regarding hold position: It seems to me the characters only follow the command a short time - if I try to position them in a strategically good spot, they bunch around my main character again in no time :( Am I doing something wrong?

What exactly is the difference between "following" a character and "defending" one in tactics mode?

Thanks in advance for putting up with my questions :)

The hold command is notoriously tricky.

The best work-around is to go into a characters tactics menu and set them to follow themselves.

By default, they are following you... thus getting pulled out of hold constantly. Hope it helps.

Following has nothing to do with the act of actually following your character around, all it means is following the targeting of whatever character you set the ai to follow.

So for example, if you set Sera -- follow -- Blackwall and you target enemy 1 with Blackwall, then Sera will target that enemy as well.

This is different than say if you set Sera -- follow -- controlled which means she will target ANY character you are directly controlling. So if you take control of Varric and while Sera is targeting enemy 1 and target enemy 2 with Varric Sera will switch targets to enemy 2.

If you want a character to follow the PC specifically regardless of whether you happen to be controlling them then set them to follow the PC by name, not simply to follow controlled.

With the defend behavior the ai won't attack unless whatever you've set it to defend is being attacked so if you set Sera -- defend -- Blackwall she will attack any enemy targeting Blackwall. Generally I don't find this to be very conducive to making use of the hold command being as with defend behaviors you often have to make use of the attack my target command since they won't be getting targeted themselves and will just sit there doing nothing. Attack my target as a COMMAND (not a behavior) however DOES override the hold command which makes the two incompatible. It also causes the AI to target jump way too often which results in you taking more damage than you should since they aren't focus firing targets.

I tend to use

tank -- follow -- self

dps -- follow -- tank

PC -- ai disabled --

Reason being that a tank that is set to follow themselves will attack the closes enemy to them. meaning if you start all your fights by taking control of your tank and running them into a group of enemies, throwing out a taunt and then having them attack one of the enemies they wills stay glued to that enemy and when that one goes down they will automatically attack then next guy.

With your dps following the tank they will focus fire whatever the tank is hitting on giving the PC the freedom to attack OTHER targets since the dps won't be following them around for target to target. This is very handy for lone wolf classes like rogues. Your team will handle the group while you go off killing guys one on one.

I disable the PC mostly because of the rogue class. On other classes it's not that bad to let the PC auto attack when you take control of someone else but on rogues it's a giant pain cause the AI will waste your stealth on a stupid auto-attack instead of getting a free flanking crit from hidden blades or whatever so I just disable it entirely.

Basically if you don't want to do a ton of micromanaging once you've run in, taunted, and set your tank to attack someone you really shouldn't need to do much of anything as far as your group is concerned as they'll happily focus down everything in sight comboing away all on their lonesome.

I made a thread with videos with regards to the hold command.

Yes, select a target, use L1 for the radial menu, and one of the left side options will set all party members to attack that target. Radial menu works in and out of tactical mode.

Using shield wall requires me to continuously press a button to build up block - can the characters keep doing that without me directly contolling them?

I think Shield Wall works as a toggle ability in tactical mode, you can set it on, and it will stay on until you disable it or run out of stamina or someone breaks your wall, however this doesn't always work great. You can set it as priority, in the behavior tab of your characters' screen, but I wouldn't trust it to get the timing right.

Do I have to switch between tactical mode and the radial menu every time I want to clear all commands, take a potion, select hold position, etc?

You can use the radial menu inside the tactical cam mode.

Regarding hold position: It seems to me the characters only follow the command a short time - if I try to position them in a strategically good spot, they bunch around my main character again in no time :( Am I doing something wrong?

Any attack command will override a previous "hold position" command. So if you want to focus fire on a target, command everyone to focus fire first, and then instruct to hold position, they will retain the target and hold position longer. Exiting combat will also erase any "hold position" commands.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your answers, they're tremendously helpful! Especially your instructions for the hold command - I think I will finally be able to manage my party without them running around the battlefield like suicidal chickens...

I'm going to put it to test now - the hinterlands are waiting! Though I probably should move on to another place eventually - there's just always one more quest I want to finish...

Thanks again :)

Just to clarify something, the AI is actually surprisingly good at using Shield Wall, Block and Slash, and Parry as a "timed" block, set it to Preferred and the AI will handle blocking incredibly well, 90% of the guard generation I see out of Blackwall and Cassandra comes from Shield Wall blocks.
