So how many dragons have you killed?

The first two were epic struggles where it came down to Quizzy and Blackwall after my mages died.
Then I said "Screw this" and started using my rogues to steamroll them in under a minute.

Zero. I'm a coward, and seeing how bad I am at combat (I'm still struggling with no healing magic) I don't dare to challenge them. When I saw the ones on hinterlands, crestwood and exalted plains, I ran like the wind.

3.
Hinterlands
Exalted Plains Crestwood
Western Approach
In that order.

I haven't actually killed any. Alright, I'll admit it- I'm a total wuss. I accidentally ran into one on my very first play-through when I was in The Hinterlands for the very first time wandering aimlessly as a total fish outta water- and I thought "oh crap!" Because I wasn't expecting it at all, not that soon, but then I thought "what the heck? Why not give it a shot. You're here now and you can't really back out of it, so why not give it a try to see what the experience is like?" So I did and I totally got my butt handed to me 3x in a row.....I have no idea what level I was at the time, maybe 3 or 4 and I really don't know what level the dragon was...but I totally got clobbered within less than a minute. Now I'm scared to face any dragon no matter what my level is because I don't know what level the dragon would be in comparison. For example...if I'm level 14 and I go back to The Hinterlands to face-off against the dragon I first met when the game started (and the Hinterlands is the very first area you're introduced to)....Would the dragon's level be comparable to mine or is it still at the 'entry' level it was when the game started?
Do dragons' levels progress in each area as the game progresses? OR are they set per map area no matter how far into the game you are and what level you advance to?
For example....the dragon in The Hinterlands (say she is level 5 when you first meet her; and you are say, level 3 or 4).....As you level-up and progress through the game if you were to go back into The Hinterlands at Level 18 would she still be level 5 or does she also advance accordingly?
I want to slay a dragon....I want to be revered as a 'Dragon Slayer'....But I don't want to get my butt handed to me again for the hundredth time. (And by the way, I'm playing on the totally-fresh fish level of "Casual")

Ah yes, the (in)famous Hinterlands dragon roasting and toasting low level would-be heroes before they know what the heck they doing.
I believe she is level 12, so you should be able to handle her if you are now level 14. Dragons don't level with you; what they are when you first find them is what they remain. You can peek at what level they are with tac cam or sometimes by right-clicking (if using m/kb) on them.
For Frosty the Frostback, make sure to have fire resistance and cold damage abilities and you should do ok. She will fly away a couple of times and breathe fire at you, and eventually move to a small hill behind the first battle area where you can finish her off. Don't forget to have drinks with Iron Bull afterwards to celebrate. ![]()

I've only killed five, playing on hard, but I did not enjoy the dragon fights as much as I thought I would.

I bagged #4 last night
Fereldan Frostback
Western Approach
Exalted Plains - stay out of the water.....
Emerald Graves - this was a toughie.
I've almost got enough to make a decent suit of armor.

Thanks for the tip, Bella
I'll be sure to heed your advice when I am ready.....Then, Dragons beware! hahahaha ("mine is an evil laugh....")

Yesterday I defeated my first dragon, on western approach...and I thought I wouldn't make it. I'm glad I took Iron Bull for this, he was excited as a little kid, it was adorable ![]()

I've still got the Hissing Waste one to do(find) and the 2 highest in EdL(I know where they are though). I'm still on my first playthrough and will get the lot before I complete the main plot.
I've just killed the last one. Now it's on to the final quest I think.

I'm still on my first playthrough, and killed more than a half of them. The last one I attacked was level 19. It had more than 250000 health and 5 (or so) Guard buffs. I'm still enjoying my four mages squad. Just regular mages, no Knight Enchanters or other special specs. Fire, frost, storm, spirit, and the most spectacular combat ![]()

Second playthrough, elven mage on nightmare no FF. Level 19, brought down 3:
- Hinterlands
- Crestwood
- Exalted Planes
Still trying to figure out the best party combination to take down the dragons. Went with 2 pure mages 1 dual dagger rogue and 1 s&s warrior (Blackwall) on the 1st two.
The third one tried with 1 pure mage, viv as KE, 1 archer rogue and 1 s&s warrior (Cassandra). Had more success in the 1st setup, as the dragons didn't seem to do the wing flapping thingy as much as the 3rd one, so I guess there is a mechanic to interupt the dragon but I couldn't do it reliably.

When I first found a dragon I was about level 7 and in the Hinterlands. The darned thing murdered my entire party by just flying over us and breathing fire. ![]()
I've gotten six so far. Just need to get the Storm Coast dragon and the three in Emprise du Lion.
