It was nice to see the developers move forward with romance considering the previous games. However the path of romance I chose seemed to be missing bits and not to mention something that annoying me.

I for one can only comment on Cullen’s romance because the other options hold no interest.

Why so late? (<---annoyance)

I am a bit perplexed as to why I need to complete Adamant and The Ball before I can sleep with Cullen. I do not get as to why this could not have happened after one or the other, not both. To me this happens so late in the game that the relationship feels on the same gear up to this point.

Sexy Time

I really would have liked the option that once you sleep with whomever you choose, from that point on you can click on your romance and go to sleep with him/her. Just a small cut scene playing out instead of the whole fade to black crap for a few seconds, making you assume that you did have sex.

Gift

OK, yeah Cullen gives my character a gift, which is sweet and all, but why cannot I give one to him? Why not after we sleep together, I get the option to make a special sword for him to which gives a cut scene and Cullen equipping the sword from now on.

Lack of Romance Banter

Hardly anyone talks about my romance with Cullen. I get a few bits here or there but no companion banter while out wandering the hills. I get ONE dialogue happen at the War Table. You would think being with the Commander would cause a lot of your companions and advisers to be chatting up about it, but instead it felt like a tumble weed was rolling by most of the time.

Just a sample after you sleep with Cullen:

Leliana: Commander, one of the couriers may have an emotional scar for the rest of their life.

Cullen: What do you mean?

Leliana: Oh let’s just say that I know you were having a bit of fun last night.

Commander: What!

Leliana: I think it’s adorable.

Cullen: Maker’s Breath!

Leliana: (Laughs)

Marriage

I for one would gladly pay for an expansion pack that adds marriage to the game. Hell, I run around as it is calling Cullen my husband. In my opinion it would be nice if Bioware finally add this option into the game.

One Sided

To me it in DAI the romance seemed one-sided, you had to initiate to romance to keep moving forward. I would have liked to have seen that after flirting with Cullen so damn much, he cannot take it anymore. You go to your room, a cut scene plays out with Cullen arriving and it goes from there.

Little Things:

Nothing like going into your Skyhold quarters and seeing a love letter left by Cullen and/or some flowers. Little things do so much for the romance, making it feel more realistic.

Bah I rambled on long enough.

Thoughts? Comments? Sexual Innuendos?

I was happy with the romance in the game. This is my first DA game, so my expectations weren't as sky high as others, but I'm content with what was presented.

I know I may get flak for this, but I'm ok with the one sex scene and the fade to black kiss afterwards. It seriously doesn't bother me.

I've romanced Sera and Cass. And I do think it felt too "scripted" or inflexible, in the sense that there are no options within the relationship, too linear.

I agree that more banter would be awesome. If I'm a human inquisitor in a relationship with the crazy elf, I expected more scandal and gossip than what I got.

You made me laugh for real. I also think that it took too much time to get Sera to put out. Hahaha.

Joking aside, I think the game does fail to bring post-sex content. Dialog options seem to end after sleeping with her, while that's only supposed after getting married!

Cassandra's romance is adorable. My favorite part is the poetry reading at the beginning of the romance culmination. The banter referencing the romance is both sweet and hilarious at the same time, especially between Cassandra and Iron Bull.

Iron Bull: He's not just an object to quench your desires, Cass. Be sure to undress him with your eyes... Respectfully.

Inquisitor: What are you two talking about?

Bull: Your naked body. Well, I am. Cassandra is just glaring and turning red.

--also--

Bull: You know how you backhanded that guy with your shield and damn near chopped him in half?

Cassandra: Yes. What of it?

Bull: You and the boss should try those moves between the sheets.

Cassandra: How do you know we haven't already?

I've been a Bioware fan for years, and I still agree with you, lol. Don't get me wrong, I love having the romance options in-game (part of why I love Bioware), but I don't think we really need any more. A lot of that stuff happens off-screen (including sexy-time), and is left up to the imagination (and fanfic!).

I personally think that Cullen's romance (possibly others, haven't done any but I've seen them on Youtube) is perfectly paced with the main storyline. Sure, if you do a lot of side-stuff it may feel thin, but that didn't bother me either. I guess that's just the Skyrim lover in me and any romance stuff is gravy (considering that romance in Skyrim is nothing but getting a pie and some moolah each day).

As for one-sided, I don't think Cullen's romance is at all. You have a couple subtle flirts to start and then it goes from there. He kisses your IQ first, and the sex-scene is initiated by simply walking in the room, and he starts it.

I think some people take this stuff too far...have you seen the sex scene mods for DA:O on the Nexus? I get embarrassed just looking at them!

Personally: I feel the romances in this game are much better developed than in past games, especially Cullen's.

There are other banters about your romance. There's at least one other I know of at the war table where Leliana comments that "some of us are eagerly awaiting your arrival." I've hear Varric calls you mrs. Rutherford and Dorian says: "I hear someone has a thing for strapping young Templars." Also the nobles in the skyhold foyer will comment. But I agree- I would have liked some actual party banter about the romance. (To be fair, I don't recall past da games having a whole lot dedicated to this either, just slightly more.)

I also would liked to have had a gift quest for LI like in DA:O.

As for the pacing I liked that you had to wait so long. It gave the romance realistic pacing and felt appropriate when it happened. Otherwise you get the sex scene early and don't have much to look forward too.

Repeatable sex scenes would just make me feel like a creep if I ever used them. I would have preferred variations on the repeatable kiss scene though.

Personally, I don't get too invested in the romances for Dragon Age. Well, there was this one guy---but that is one story I'll never tell.

Being called "Mrs. Rutherford" is an urban legend - this has not been confirmed by anybody yet. As far as the "Cullen thread" is concerned, this does not exist.

I agree that variable kissy scenes would be sorta cool - it's implied that sex is part of their relationship...I don't need to have it spelled out for me, lol.

The ONLY thing that could possibly be improved, imo, is more party banter since Cullen is not a companion and also an update to his tarot card.

Personally, I think it has the most interesting arrays of romances yet.

DA:O - My first romance was Alistair, completed both Zevran and Leliana (all female Wardens), and tried to make a male Warden to romance Morrigan but couldn't get through it. Loved the Alistair romance, thought all the rest were meh, personally.

DA2 - My first romance was Anders, which is great for the story (but if you kill him, you don't get the achievement - I mean, we lived together for years, I think it's a cop out to suggest he must be at the final battle for it to count, but whatev), but kind of meh as a romance. I've tried all the others, but none really caught my heart. Anders is the best of the bunch, I feel, and it's a sorry bunch. Not enough range really either.

DAI - I have so far romanced Cullen, Sera, and Solas. Looking forward to romancing basically everyone available except maybe Iron Bull (which still seems funny - just not romantic). I will even likely make a male Inquisitor for Cassandra and definitely one for Dorian.

The Cullen one was my favorite (so far). I've done it once and doing it again now. It didn't feel late at all to me - you can flirt with him quite early, and it seems to evolve naturally. Sex seems like kind of a big deal to Cullen, so it makes sense to me that it takes time. (Can't you sleep with someone like Iron Bull a bit faster? Sera was certainly fairly fast, it seemed. I swear I triggered it before the ball, and she sleeps with you as soon as the romance starts - "race you to the bedroom!" - whereas the romance starts with Cullen long before the sex scene you're mentioning). I also didn't feel like the romance was one-sided with Cullen at all, between the "come away with me scene," the dance scene and the scene at the end, where he approaches me, not to mention the single (but adorable) War Table banter, etc. I felt it was about equal to the Alistair romance and definitely both-sided. As to more sex scenes, I'm not against that, but I wouldn't use it - my imagination is fine, and if it's just the same scene over and over again, like the Kiss Scene, I don't see the point (I never did the Kiss Scene repeatedly either, though so I can see the use of including such a scene for people who do). There is WAY less banter available with Cullen, and, I assume, maybe, Josie, seemingly because he's an adviser. More War Table banter about the romance would be cool. Other people do comment on it, I think - definitely the NPCs in the Hall do. And it makes a nice twist at the Ball, with all his admirers.

The Sera one has some cute quests. I like the one where my Lady Adaar had to go around asking about gifts, telling everyone she and Sera were together. And I like how it's a fairly feisty and funny relationship - lots of fighting. It feels like there's lots of sex because it's alluded to more, but it still seems like there's only one nudity scene (which is fine with me). The line at the end of the final scene is funny. There's lots of good related banter, if you take her along with you places. She's not a subtle one. Some interactive banters too. Now, I can't decide whether I truly like Sera or not (me personally) but it made for some fun RPing with my Qunari Mage. I enjoyed it. Not as romantic as the Cullen one though - more lighthearted by far. As a Qunari, the Sera romance definitely didn't feel one-sided. She is very forward. I've heard it maybe feels different as other races, particularly elves, but cannot say.

The Solas one is heartbreaking but short. As a romance, it was not my favorite, but it added more resonance to the overall story than I imagine any do. And the angst! Oh, the angst! I wish there was more to this one, but I understand why there isn't. No sex scene at all, so sounds like it wouldn't be for you. Unlike Sera, the banter didn't seem as frequent, but I still remember a few. This romance definitely didn't feel one-sided to me - actually, it felt as though Solas was rather obsessed with me, though I can't quite explain why. It feels like that with an Elven Inquisitor even who does not romance him (playing such an elf now).

So far I have romanced Cullen, Solas, Blackwall and Bull. I plan on romancing Dorian at some point.

Over all I have very happy with Cullen's romance. It was incredibly sweet and I couldn't get enough! As much as I would love more sex scenes, I would like more of a repeatable "cuddle" scene. I've seen a scene with Josie where it's you and her sitting in front of the fire cuddling. I don't know if it's repeatable but I loved it and would love a repeatable one for any LI.

I would also have liked to have given him some kind of gift. But I also would have liked to receive a gift that changed my appearance in some way (like a necklace that after receiving was always visible or something. Turn the coin into a necklace! There we go...), same goes for a gift that he received from me. Like you suggested a sword that he now equips.

I agree there needed to be party banter concerning the relationship. I don't think I heard any while out exploring, which was disappointing. I was kinda expecting a lot of banter from Varric like in DA2. I was expecting a question like he always gave Hawke's LI about how it happened.

I know in Bull's romance you actually do give him a necklace. You actually make a matching pair for the two of you. I would have liked to have actually seen it...

As much as his romance was sometimes (okay 3/4 of the time) cringe worthy, there were a lot of sweet moments that I honestly wouldn't have seen coming from Bull. But I enjoyed it. I couldn't help the "Dawww" when he started calling me Kadan.

There was party banter with Cole, Bull and the Inquisitor that I laughed so hard with. Cole butting into personal thoughts on their sex life was hilarious! But that was the only banter I had and was disappointed. There seemed to be more banter about the potential romance between Bull and Dorian if you didn't romance either of them.

I romanced Solas on my 2nd play through and after I got the chip off my shoulder with the ending I absolutely loved his romance. My heart melted after he started calling me vehnan.

He had a bit of party banter. Sera will comment on two elves bumping so it means something. The Quizzy can verbally smack her or giggle and Solas will make a comment for whatever response the Quizzy gives. And then Cole will comment on the break up after. But other than that I didn't hear anything else, which was disappointing.

There was no gifts given from either side really. Unless you call his stealing your tattoos a gift... I don't! I probably would have if he

Spoiler

Blackwall's was sweet in its way. He felt so undeserving of the Inquisitor. At times though his felt really slow.

And I have NEVER gotten any kind of party banter concerning that relationship. Which I'm annoyed about. There was plenty of banter concerning his possible courtship of Josie if you didn't romance him. But none for the Inquisitor or him? What a jip. Because of this, his romance especially felt like it was non-existent. Kinda like Sebastian's if you romanced him...

I haven't romanced Cullen yet, but I don't mind a slow burn romance. I haven't been disappointed by the romance options in any of the Dragon Age games, yet. There are some romances that aren't for me and some that I love. I don't have to love them all to be perfectly satisfied.

I'm still horrified we'd have only gotten Iron Bull and Blackwall if not for that extra development time.

I got Solas in this game and Anders in DA2, so I can't complain. I'm really, really, really happy with what I got, even if it's not that many scenes, because it could've been that much worse. You know whom I romance when I play DAO as a female? Tamlen.

As for other romances, I like the characters, but it isn't for me. I hoped Cullen would work(I have fond memories of Crisium's fanfiction), but somehow, nope. Maybe it just hit the wrong spots, or maybe after Solas, nothing would work. Don't know. Very happy it works for Cullen fans, though. I like the character a lot.

(but I have nightmares about the Game That Might Have Been without our extra romance options. NIGHTMARES)

I was fine with the pacing on Cullens romance, it felt like you had time to get to know each other at a realistic pace.

But then I have strong opinions about whirlwind romances anyway, lost count of the number of times I've yelled at the tv or book when the stupid hero goes gooey eyed. "how can you be in love for ever and ever you fool, its been 5 minutes"  ;)

I was expecting more out of the romance x] heard many things about how they'd make it more tasteful and better than the previous dragonage games. I expected our romance option to be in our decorated head quarters whenever we'd enter it. though of course, we could'nt decorate our headquarters and neither was our option in our bedroom. I really gotta stop having high hopes for features especially done by PR.

the solas romance was nice..wish my inquisitor could've kissed him like the other romanceable peeps xD but it's all good in the end. dude didn't want to be all there...there. I have'nt tried the other romances but I'm gonna assume that they're more fulfilling when it comes to interactions. Not to say they're better than solas's storywise ;D only when it comes to sexytimes

my thoughts: i liked the romance in my playthrough, but i expected lots more than what was on my plate

Is it bad that I was way more invested in Lelianna and the HOFs relationship then the Inqusitors romance with Cass and Josie. I found them dull, next playthrough I'm just gonna go solo like my femHawke when Talis and Aveline ditched her.

I've done Solas's romance and watched a friend do Cullen and Josie's. All three of them are different and interesting in their own ways. You get more cutscenes with Cullen than you do with Solas (not entirely sure about Josie). I think the pacing feels off because it's such an enormous game. All of the romances have more content than we got in ME2 and DA2, for instance. But since there's just so much game between those moments it feels like there's less. So the romances suffer from the same pacing problems that the rest of the game does.

Out of the three romances I've seen, only Cullen got a sex scene. But even so, Josie and Solas's romances felt completely different. Solas's felt weightier, and all of the scenes had a very palpable sexual tension (even though nothing was actually shown). Josie's was light and fluffy and feel-good. Much like Cullen's in that regard. I really like how much variation there is, and how Bioware are now confident enough in their storytelling to not include a sex scene if it wouldn't fit.

Honestly? I think Inquisition's romances are the best Bioware has ever done in a single game. Even if we're just talking about the quality of the scenes themselves. The updates in technology have allowed them to really carefully craft the facial expressions and body language, which can make each individual scene say a lot more than they could before. For example, I don't think they could've done a romance like Solas's, where so much is implied and yet left unsaid, without the ability to really portray how vulnerable he makes himself during his scenes.

I romanced Solas on my 2nd play through and after I got the chip off my shoulder with the ending I absolutely loved his romance. My heart melted after he started calling me vehnan.

Spoiler

Well, the gift he gives her isn't removing the vallaslin. It's the knowledge of what they used to mean, and the choice whether to keep them or not. Even if you decide to keep them, you aren't refusing the gift. You are simply saying that they are a part of who you are and that even knowing their meaning you still want to keep them. You're making a choice. It's a very Solas sort of gift. He's not one for big romantic gestures like Cass, or showing you care by trading material gifts like Sera. He believes that the greatest thing a person can give to anybody is the power to choose. So that is what he gives you.

Blackwall's was sweet in its way. He felt so undeserving of the Inquisitor. At times though his felt really slow.

And I have NEVER gotten any kind of party banter concerning that relationship. Which I'm annoyed about. I know for sure that Solas comments on Blackwall's relationship with the Inquisitor, post-judgement. It's a good banter. I think all of the romances have at least one banter where a party member comments on it.

Well I am happy with them, but really feel like something more should have been added, probably because so much more was promised. Still kind of bitter about the hate-filled love that never reached us. I guess the anticipation set the bar really high, too, but I don't think a few more party banter lines or one scene before the final battle would have been that difficult to make. Oh well.

Forgetting the what-could-have-been, what we have is very satisfying. I've finished Cullen, Solas and Dorian romances, almost done with Iron Bull and had a peek of Sera's, Cassandra's and Blackwall's - the last one and Josephine's being the only ones I probably won't see through. They're all very good in their own ways, not all of them are for everyone but most of the players should be able to find their favourite LI.
