although i created a tank character i'm finding myself having to spend most of my time as solas because of how important barrier timing and placement is in regards to damage mitigation. I can't just leave the AI to do it as it is pretty random who it shields. I'd rather they just had the healing spells system of previous games.

You don't really need barrier to tank, trust me.  How are you going about generating Guard?

Yeah, I found that with a 2HW I had to add a couple of points in vanguard to help her generate guard.  I mostly just had to worry about barrier on the mage and rogue.

Early in the game you'll be a bit squishy, because of the lack of passives and gear mitigation. War Cry and well timed Shield Wall are your best friends in order to build guard.

If you still feel you need the barrier, you can set Solas' barrier to the only preferred ability in tactics, and his behavior to defend you. That should help.

Timing is very important with early game war cry. Don't be afraid to rush into to a field of enemies - the more you taunt the more you build up guard.

The Charge is also a fantastic early game tool for crowd control and guard gensration, especially for 2-handers. Combine it with Mighty Blow early on for a lethal combo that knocks down, generates guard and does very good damage. They pair together perfectly.

Yeah 2-handers are rough going early on but are godly in the end game.

Why don't you just barrier "preferred" through tactics menu

If you need a barrier to keep your tank alive, and your playing the tank primarily, something has to be wrong with your build or playstyle. Honestly the shield wall is a little tricky, but once you get the hang of playing a warrior a barrier becomes insignificant compared to your own defenses.

But Shield Wall makes you immortal.
