Personally, I liked this mission, precisely because it is different. I did have to run through it a few times to get the lay of the land so to speak, both for finding all the statuettes I needed and getting the ending I wanted. I do agree the level design makes you feel like a bit of a hamster in a maze, with all those doors and twisting, often dark, corridors. The only regret I have is that there is no way you can complete every quest here, as the limited number of hallas means you cannot open every door.
As for wanting to simply let Orlais collapse: I'd say this is basically the Orzammar succession crisis in Orlesian format. You didn't have the option there to simply say "go find our own king, you lazy dwarves" there either. You need the Orlesian support just as much as you needed the dwarves in Origins (with or without golems). Perhaps this could have been stated a bit more explicitly? I don't know...
Also, this entire thing made me think of the old Sid Meier's Pirates! game, with its dancing mini-game which was so different from the rest of the game that it tripped up (no pun intended) a lot of players, including me.
