Why is Thane's death surprising? It's literally one of the first things he tells you. I would have preferred a way to cure him in the end, if only because I believe that the player's control over the story is paramount, but why is it stupid?

Because he dies by jumping on Kai Leng's sword.

He died.

By Jumping.

On Kai. Leng's. Sword.

That's what's terrible about it. Not even adding the part where Shep just derps and stands there.

I honestly wonder if in a DLC we'll get issues with Cullen getting back on the lyrium or some such drama.  It's too perfect of an ending.  Or Maker forbid he dies!

Ha - he did that because he knew he was gonna die anyway, a slow and painful death.   Might as well save the day.  Shep probably knew that deep down.  I romanced Thane on both playthroughs and I really enjoyed it, even with him tragically dying.  Honestly I'm not sure it would have been so romantic if he was healthy.  I'm usually not a glutton for that sort of thing but that whole story really moved me (obvious from my username).

Having just culminated my romance with Cullen, I could use some drama!  I got cavities from how sickly sweet that whole thing was.  Cullen dies from lyrium withdrawal.  Could you imagine the uproar that would cause?

Love it!

See this is what happens when so many of the romances end badly, you expect it even when they don't. I'm kinda creeped out by Cullen now, and got an ominous feeling in the last scene. The way he talks about not knowing what's next. I'm thinking hmmm, he must be plotting something. Haha. :P

Well if you really want to go there, here is the thread that I made which explains, in detail, all of the reasons why it was stupid.

I probably shouldn't comment on this, as I haven't played the romance, but for me the fact that Thane died is fine. You were told from the beginning that was going to happen.

HOW that death was handled was a big problem though. The fact that you got 0 content beforehand, no romance achievement, and the fact that no one cares or mentions it is a massive issue. Just because Thane died, doesn't mean they should have got less (virtually none) content or importance for that romance.

Players accepted a tragedy by starting that romance, they didn't accept no romance at all.

I haven't done the Cullen romance story yet, but I do have the impression that it's pretty easy on the drama. It's a shame, lol.

What do you mean no content? You can have multiple romance conversations with him, there's a kiss scene, he nicknames you, you can booty call him to your quarters - granted this is all in ME2.

I meant in ME3. The romance in 2 is fine, but the romances you started in 2 were supposed to carry on to 3.

I got lucky and romanced Garrus, and got an entire game worth of content in 3. People who romanced Thane got about 2 lines and everyone acted like the romance never existed. It's really unfair to players.

Yeah, I can see that.  It's been a while since I've played, but I remember thinking - "that's it???" in ME3, but I guess I handwaved it as Shep being a hard ass.  I've played ME2 more times so I think the satisfaction from that has sustained me.  Although I just read RShara's post on Thane, I did not know that the convo options were the same as if you didn't romance him in ME2.  If that's true, that's pretty lazy.  I wasn't big into forums then (obviously).  I did feel like we were given more closure in the Citadel DLC with Koylat and the memorial.

Yeah, the content is exactly the same if you didn't romance him.

I heard they added more in Citadel, but I never played it. And it doesn't really excuse that fact that it wasn't in the original game.

Still, I think it's better than how they handled Jacob... Cheats on you with another women and has a baby. I'm honestly curious how the writers came to the conclusion that was a good idea. I heard they "forgot" he was a romance option or something?!? I know there's a large writing team, but how exactly does not one person point that out?! I can't imagine that ever happening to a LI for men....

I think a lot of that comes down to how your companions rarely GAS how you feel or what is going on with you. It was nice how DAI did have a few times where someone asked after you, but then you get things like your elf character's clan can be wiped out and no one says anything. In most BioWare games you're busy playing therapist to everyone and rarely, if ever, get any consideration in turn for how you must be feeling about all the crap that is going on.

But that isn't solely an issue of female love interests or such. It's just another thing that would be nice to change up in the future.

I feel like that the treatment of female PC in Mass Effect is one of the reasons I haven't played ME2/3. I mean, I haven't really liked the first game - Star Trek is just not my thing, fantasy all the way - but I may have given them a chance if I haven't heard all that bitching about how M!Shep is treated so much better, and this bitching seems to be totally deserved. I mean, I romanced Kaiden in ME1, and he was such a wet blanket I seriously thought about choosing to save Ashley - at least she wasn't boring (I didn't mind her attitude). Romancing Garrus (while he's an OK character) is something I feel uncomfortable with, so it seems like despite the hordes of women available to a guy, my character was fated to either continued romancing Kaiden, forcing me to relive the days of KOTOR with Carth (hate him), turn lesbian or be celibate. Such a nice perspective. I'd probably still play if I liked the genre and gameplay, but I didn't, so I'll stick with Dragon Age, thank you.

Absolutely.  Like nobody actively asks you about Blackwall if you're romancing him and that - thing happens.  You can ask Sera and Josephine about it if you drill down to that convo tree but it would have been nice if anyone would just say one line - tough break, you okay?  Or something like that.  Definitely the clan being wiped out is another.

Unless you count the boldness of testing the sturdiness of his desk, there's not an ounce of drama.  Then he has a mild nightmare and you tell him you love him.  :)

I never did the Thane romance, but it does sound like ME3 handled it like crap.  I'd have been pissed off too if ME3 didn't even bother to address the fact that I'd romanced someone.  That's just really bad writing.

I also had the same issue with DAI regarding your companions pretty much not having a thing to say to you about YOU.  When Solas broke up with me, no one had anything to say about it.  You'd think Cole would have been all over this, little helper that he is.

Aside from romance choices which to me wasn't the best thing about the ME series anyway (Dragon Age does them better), Femshep was by far the better PC IMO because of Jennifer Hale's voice acting.  I love sci fi, though.

He is! There is a banter with Cole about the breakup. Maybe you caught the banter bug?

Sera also has a comment, but it... might not be what you'll want to hear.

Oh yeah, forgot about banter.  But depending on your party configs you might never hear it.  I got to hear Sera console Blackwall on our breakup during my second PT, and it was really sweet in a Sera way.

Yeah, this was pretty bad. I understand the amount of work it would take to add things like this, but really?? EVERYONE I have ever known has just died and not a single line??  <_<

There actually is a banter with Cole after the break up. But it's only if you take him and Solas in your party. It differs based off whether you got the Vallaslin removed. Insanely easy to miss though. Some people also comment if you got the Vallaslin removed. Which never triggered in my game...  <_< So yeah, I got neither of these...

I've heard the banter from Cole on YouTube, but it seemed more about Solas' pain than my Inquisitor's.  It's not a moment of Cole trying to help ease her pain or anything like that.

And yeah, I got a comment from Sera, but it was entirely about the vallaslin and nothing about the breakup.  If you ask her what she thinks about Solas, she still makes the "elven glory" comment, even after he dumps you.  Also, Cassandra kept repeating banter to Solas about the vallaslin, in which he tells her he'd rather not talk about it as it was done in a private moment.  Unfortunately, yet again, it's about Solas and not the PC.  I wanted to respond to that banter so badly, especially after I got it for the fifth time!

I thought the banter supposedly never repeats? I read that from BioWare in response to complaints about lack of banter, and they are trying to spread it out.  Personally I'd rather hear a couple of comments recycled than the sometimes long stretches of nothing.
