Hear, hear!

This is sort of why I ended up headcanoning my fem!Cousland HoF as ending up with Nathaniel. I couldn't reconcile what needed to happen to end up with Alistair with her character. It just didn't work, felt sleazy all around.

Either you force him to sleep with a woman he despises to keep him alive while simultaneously allowing her to complete some baby-making ritual for who knew what end purpose....or you die, or he dies. Lovely.

Ack.

I thought DAII was better in this regard. I don't mind drama. I don't mind angst. Fenris and Anders both had tons of that going on, yet there was still a chance to semi-reconcile in the end (I did rivalmance with Anders and traditional with Fenris).

But yeah. DA:I kinda' slid backward, I think. (Though I will say the Cullenmance was love.)

How did DAI slide back? The only romance for females that ends in heartbreak is Solas, who wasn't even one of the original LIs but was made one during the time extension.

I'll admit, it's probably a personal bias, which is why I was careful to add the "I think" disclaimer in there.

For me, the most compelling LIs were Cullen and Solas. You could not have put a prettier bow on the Cullenmance- I have zero complaints there. But with Solas, it was kind of like, Oh gosh, we're doing this again? Gave me bad flashbacks of my Thane/Jacob/Anders/(semi-Alistair, though I readily admit, it's because of the way I play it) romances. Being forced into unhappy/death endings is kinda', I don't know, disappointing.

I've never considered the ratio of who gets the shorter end of stick- men or women- and that's a sink hole I'm not really excited about jumping into, but perhaps there's something to that as well?

How does ending of rival romance with him actually differs from friendship?

Also, if you rivalmance him, you get a scene where he actively considers changing course and it appears that Justice won't "let" him. It's really quite interesting. It doesn't exactly absolve him from guilt, but you at least get the sense that he's not completely zealous in his quest to free mages.

Frankly, I found the moral issues, along with weighing a man's present against his past to be one of the more compelling - and definitely not boring - situations in the game. I think there are also plenty of other instances in the game that present you with the option to give people a chance to redeem themselves despite their past (or really recent) sins, so I certainly found it fitting.

I think you're right about the "whats" - when you describe what the romance and Blackwall's character is about, it's true, it's a story that could have been powerful.

(Though I still wouldn't romance him after what he did, because killing kids for money = major dealbreaker, but well).

However, I think "hows" are just as important. How the story is described, how the character presents himself, his dialogue. And I felt the writing was weak, which is why I do not believe this character. He isn't as real to me as Cassandra or Cullen or even Leliana in DAI, who was written by the same author. Hence, boring.

(His looks and his voice didn't help, either, but again, my personal taste).

Yeah the way my aggressive Hawke just sighed at Anders once Justice took over and he didn't remember anything broke my heart. Poor Hawke lost everyone in my game and then he lost Anders to Justice. He couldn't catch a break.

I strongly disagree. It was a conflict between mages and templars, but he just blew up a chantry, killed innocent people and escalated the conflict so after that everyone would actually see that there is in fact a real reason to be afraid of mages. I disapprove tunnel vision. I like mages. I dont like templars and chantry for my own reasons. I dont like how system templars/mages works in this world. I honestly think it works very poorly. Talking about kirkwalls conflict - it was definitely Meridith's fault that it even started. But blowing up a chantry is not a solution at all.

In the real world, terrorist organizations who win the war become revolutionaries.

I don't like the way mages are treated.... about time someone took the bull by the horn....

I was just thinking that his character was well written :) because I see how much his guilt controls him and how it affects his doing. His story can also end in many ways which I think is a good thing. I think the children who get killed was an accident. So that is why I could forgive him because he has blamed himself a lot. But I think he should have come clean about it because even then you would have a lot of things to deal with without him just running away. I have been thinking a lot what kind of an Inquisitor I would create to romance him (I'm not doing that but it's fun to think about it. He is just not interesting as an LI) But I just can't think what kind of person that could be. I guess when he leaves the Inquisitor it is just too much for me and to my inquisitors.

I guess I'm just worried that there will be a lot of LIs for female PCs who just decide to leave you or do something bad behind your back. I understand why Anders does it. I understand why Solas does it and so far Solas romance is the best romance there is. But I have troubles understanding why Blackwall does it because there are story reasons with both Anders and Solas but similar story reasons doesn't exist with Blackwall and Anders was one of the LI in previous game. I think there were strong reasons why you could forgive Solas' and Anders' actions but I just can't see similar reasons with Blackwall. I guess I'm hoping that there will be confident and mature male LI for females for a change. I guess something like Varric.
