Heya guys, as the title says i have some questions regarding the necromancer class, i hope you can give hlep me.
1-After you become necromancer story wise people treat you different? (I hope not)
2- Necro dps is strong?
3- Fire with a bit of storm work well?
4- Not regarding necro only, shocking status how much exactly reduce resistance?
5- Winter stillnes (the one who give 30% cd reduction and mana reg) from winter tree work well for mana reg? or you don't have mana issue?
thank you all in advance and sorry for my bad english :P

1-You have some dialog with your companions, Sera slightly disaproves, Solas aproves, Cassandra remarks her dislike for necromancy due to her heritage but it doesn't change her aproval.

2-Necro has some Damage over time powers, to me Necromancer is the weakest of the 3 mages.

3-Fire and Shock works well with necro, wall of fire is a must for necro if you ask me.

4-I don't exactly know this one

5-Winter stillnes is a must for any non-rift mage. It doesn't give %30cd reduction though O.o

Spell that your character moves while casting breaks the stilness though. Fire mine, ice mine, energy barrage i think makes the caster step forward so it's something to consider.

Due to limited mana poool necromancers end up being the weakest mage specialization.

1 - Only actual disapproval comes from Cole and Blackwall, Cassandra just mentions her uncle and his fascination with corpses and she hopes you don't become like that to which you can give 3 different answers with no approval gain or penalty. You chose to be a Necromancer, fear is your weapon.

2 - Strong enough, I certainly didn't feel the lack of dps as long as I had decent gear. Walking Bomb is amazing under certain conditions.

3 - Both Fire and Storm trees are excellent for Necro, I picked Storm and I specced Dorian Fire, I'm on Walking Bomb and Spirit Mark duty while Dorian is about Horror and fear/damage from the Fire tree (Wall of Fire)

4 - Don't know.

5 - Works well as long as you don't spam spells that break it, Energy Barrage for instance and I'm sure there are some others as well. I use EB alot with that passive and I do well.

So they cast less spell with more wait time? some experienced necro can sgare some tips?

You want the "Gathering Storm" passive in Storm, noticable when you want to keep a constant Walking Bomb on a big target (like a dragon) or "Clean Burn" if you are Fire spec.

The way I see it necromancers have great potential on paper with their spirits, on-kill buffs and aoe bomb - the problem is just that it's too conditional/situational to work very well in practice.

I've spent alot of time with this class, the fact is I do very well on nightmare difficulty even without the best gear (currently T2 at lvl 17). Conditions and situations that you talk about are something you either exploit by paying attention or set them up yourself.

Maybe using a necro with a rift mage can improve the setup of your spells. Regarding mana instead? problems?

Bringing Solas along helps of course, but it's not strictly necessary. Static Cage and Fade Step, both upgraded, are my tools for herding groups, Walking Bomb is a toggle which you can detonate before it runs out, and upgraded it will spread even with the target alive unlike what the tooltip says. The effect is similar to upgraded Stonefist, knocks them all on their asses within the blast radius. I sometimes use a lyrium potion when it gets hectic, but it's rare. Finding a ring the extends the duration of Static Cage can help as well.

That's true to a point, but a problem I have with that is that setting up such conditions often makes the gameplay feel contrived. For example, I can spirit mark an enemy, focus-fire it down quickly and ignore the others to make sure I get good use out of a controlled spirit, but is there any other reason not to just trap and aoe the entire group, having most of them die roughly at the same time? It gives the game a feel of "I know there's an easier way we could do this, but you guys need to let me use all my abilities!"

Although yes, I guess there's a sweetspot on nightmare before you get to powerful where things are still difficult enough that you may have to diversify a bit. But as soon as you gear up, that tends to change.

Rift mage is awesome on groups of regular enemies, but suffers when facing elites and bosses (basically any large enemy that has physical immunity, like bears). The rift mage can't do anything to control such enemies, and ends up limited to spamming nukes, which isn't what the spec excels at. Also the rift mage has zero defense against enemies it can't control, so you can't really do anything but run away if you get targeted by such opponents. Soloing bosses is a no-go unless you can run around and kite endlessly.

again...also necromancer has 0 defense vs enemies immune to fear or you want to use the focus ability just to escape a single enemy that is attacking you??

use your tanks to taunt enemies

The only thing i (really) like about Necromancer is the passive that gives HP and mana when someone close to you dies. No matter if you are the killer or not.

Again, yes. But necromancer has better damage against non-controllable enemies, and sometimes utility with their spirits. But I agree, they are very squishy when targeted directly as well.

Necromancer doesn't have good damage at all. A 200% and 75% DoT? That's good damage to you? And those spells take 115 mana to cast. WHAT? Talk about a crap opportunity cost.

Spirit Blade does 400% weapon damage every second essentially, and it isn't single target.

Please.

I mean it's fine to be a Necromancer for roleplay reasons, but let's not pretend it's actually a good specialization.

I meant better damage than rift mages who are limited to spamming stonefist. KEs excel on difficult single mobs, never said otherwise.. and if you read my posts you'll see that I never claimed necromancer to be a particularly good spec either.

Or you could not waste your mana on abilities that don't fit the situation and stick to energy barrage, fire mine. You should be protecting your dps that specialize in taking down bosses. On bosses a rift mage is just as useful as a necromage, which is to provide barrier and the occasional fire mine/energy barrage.

There is no reason to make your mage be your dps, mostly because they suck at it. There are more important things a a mage can be doing in bosses than wasting their entire mana pool on abilities that don't provide any meaningful benefit.

So a rift mage is just as good on bosses, and better on normal mobs.

KE instead compared to the 2 other spec is no death easy mode right? (I play on nightmare)

From a powergaming point of view, yes - but if someone chose a necromancer it's likely that they'll want to actually use their abilities. And there are many more enemies that are immune to physical than require constant barrier overwatch, so there's almost always mana to spare for more spells than your barrage/mine rotation anyway.

I correct myself, KE with spare use of spiritual blade and focus on ranged spellcasting is easy mode no death?

Depends. The key to KE survivability is the fade shield ability that refills your barrier as you do damage, ranged or melee. If you have that and use barrier, you need to stop attacking or take a lot of sustained damage to die.

If i take only the passive and skip barrier? some challenge remain?

I'd recommend taking normal barrier but skipping fade shield. That will give you some defense and make you able to melee a bit + defend yourself if attacked by melee, but won't allow you to stay in the thick of it indefinitely.

The drawback with this is that it also robs KE of one offensive advantage - the fire ability chaotic focus depletes barrier to boost spell damage. This synergizes extremely well with fade shield as, the more damage done, the more barrier will replenish itself to be depleted again on the next nuke.
