I managed to get my Legionnaire up to level 7, some pretty good gear I think, etc.

Is it possible to jump to Perilous? I noticed there was no communication via mic and also very unbalanced party composition. I was playing the legionnaire, paired with 3 archers once or 2 reavers. We never actually managed to finish a mission because of this. I am thinking about finally getting into MP because SP has become stale and grindy but helpful tips and answers to my questions would be appreciated.

Perilous is for experienced players with the best or almost the best equipment.

I'm still playing Routine.

I will try Threatening when I have a level 20 build that I am happy with, with good gear.

Maybe it will be fine, maybe I will have my ass handed to me.

But I hope it will be fine.

Once I have prestiged my favourite L20 builds a few times

(and where they have great gear)

I will try Perilous.

That's the plan.

from my experience so far... group composition is less important than player experience.  definitely true in routine and threatening, perilous raises the bar a bit but I still feel players themselves have more impact than the particular group composition.  (e.g. no barrier then LoS pulls to choke points, etc.)

have finished many runs without the holy trinity (lego, barrier caster, dps), good players will adapt to the group composition, and generally have good situational awareness.  (e.g. not being 2 rooms ahead of the group that is checking out a treasure room, or still dealing with a shadow)

at the same time, I have seen folks with great gear and harder to get banners/portraits/titles that just zerg around and wipe or near wipe groups.

By priority:

1. Items (High level rares/uniques)

Huge gap

2. Team brains.

3. Team level.

4. Using equipment in the right time

By team brains I mean warriors not rushing to their deaths wasting those precious 3 revives per match before final stage, not opening chests when team fights with mobs, Keepers/Elementalists using Barrier, etc. Team level is important and ofc you should avoid some abysmal skills which are out there. And although BioWare said that smart usage of potions is very important there's only a handful of useful ones and the 2 per match limit results in nobody using anything prior to area 5/5 and in public games you can be sure that nobody will use anything on the final stage as well. Still, smartly thrown slow grenade or the confusion bomb can help the team a lot.

But really, this game is mostly about items and unlike ME3:

1) You can't just run as an adept and kill everything with your powers because the skills have damage based on your weapons DPS %

2) You have absolutely no guarantee you'll eventually get the good gear. The grind seems to be even more of a chore than in ME3 atm.

Not really, but Zone 5 is usually a room of shame.

You mean, I'm not the only one whom Zone 5 fills with shame!? :o

He means that on wave 5 every player and his mother stays in the room with the healing well and the team tries to hold it against the boss.

Personally I have found success in talking the team out of it only in my premade group.

Ah. I had noticed a tendency for everyone to group up in the same place, but in my case, there usually wasn't a healing well.

So you mean, they are dreaded... (*dun* *dun* *dun*) campers!

I no longer know. If your team spreads out like dust and everyone start dying in different corner of map, it´s problematic too. I´ve tried holding the room so many times and there is equally high chance of wiping when the team gets overwhelmed or disrupted in that confined space, so I no longer consider it any better strategy. I think staying on the controlled move as a group would be best, but when 2 people stay in room while 1 is following me out, it usually ends in chaos.

You didn't manage to finish a mission because you're all new. It's got nothing to do with the party composition.

I've got almost the best items in the game and I still play routine ~20% of the time (until I reach level 8 or so), threatening ~75%, and the remaining 5% of the time I do perilous is only because friends want me to. Threatening is the best gold/time ratio unless you have a hacker helping out in perilous, and although perilous can be somewhat better xp/time ratio than threatening, you should have very good items and, imo, a minimum of ~50-100 hours under your belt so you don't burden your team by dying all the time. If you really want to get into perilous ASAP, then be the old man in the bikini arcane warrior with one of the cheese builds you can find on forums.

Routine: ~550 gold, 5k xp, usually finished 25-50% faster than threatening (assuming average pug routine team).

Threatening: ~1100 gold, 10k xp, more enemies and enemies deal and take 2-3x more damage than routine, usually finished 25-50% faster than perilous.

Perilous: ~1400 gold (if the guy you are escorting doesn't die in 0.5 seconds), 20k xp, more enemies and enemies deal and take 2-3x more damage than threatening.

It's definitely better to die together, than to die alone! ;D

But it sounds like you're suggesting something akin to what often happens when several knowledgeable players play ME 3 Platinum, with the group more or less moving to spawns together, but not staying in one place long enough to get overwhelmed.

Me, too!

I refer to it as a "tactical retreat."

While the Legionnaire is probably one of the least gear-dependant classes, you might want to do threatening before jumping into perilous. You will have an easier time and get more money in return for the time you invest. Threatening is for money farming, perilous is for exp farming and promotion grinding.

For Threatening and Perilous I'd recommend you use Payback Strike, Walking Fortress, Counter Strike and To The Death. Payback Strike is a strong counter that throws down enemies around you and instantly recovers you from any debilitating effects. Walking Fortress gives invincibility, as well as guard and cooldown reduction upon being hit. Counter Strike is the biggest area taunt, gives full guard and knocks down melee and ranged enemies when they attack you for a few seconds after activation. To The Death taunts a single enemy, makes it stronger and take more damage every second and gives you 25% guard every time it's hit by any attack. Important passives are Bulwark and Flow of Battle.

Get an axe and learn to cancel the attack animation at the beginning of the second strike, which gives you the fastest attack speed. This will let you survive, you'll still be dependant on well-geared teammates whith high DPS though.

You can send me a friend request in Origin if you want. It's not like I can blow you up with a-bombs here ... not yet anyway.
