Just look at who the Romance choices are: A gloom-and-doom Anders that is literally possessed by his personal demon.  An inept Merrill that is absolutely convinced  that "I can handle this", despite a long history of failure and mortal consequences to questionable endeavors, resulting in her becoming a social outcast.  A sociopathic Isabella who doesn't care what consequences occur, just so long as she gets what she wants.  A bigoted escaped elf slave named Fenris that wants all mages to be dead or Tranquilized.  (Yeah, my sister should be euthanized just to satisfy your world view, Fenris.)  And lastly choir boy Sebastian that despite his extreme religious devotion, has no problem with homosexual affairs.

With choices like this, I'm surprised that they didn't add a little incest with Bethany.  At least she's a nice person.  Certainly a lot more appealing than any of the other Romance candidates.

Sebastian can only be romanced by a female Hawke.

Fenris doesn't want all mages dead, he wants them in the Circle. He disapproves if Qunari kill Ketojan and if Hawke lets Ella die.

I actually enjoyed all the romances except for Anders (couldn't stomach even flirting with him).

Your assessment of the characters is way off base, seeing them in the simplest, black-and-white manner possible.  Isabela, if romanced, displays a lot of insecurity behind her actions, and experiences a lot of growth in the relationship.  Merrill, if romanced does the same, and she takes precautions every step of the way, asking for Hawke's assistance and asking him to kill her if she gets possessed.  Yes, she's confident, or she wouldn't be doing it at all.  Should she stumble and stutter, Hawke wouldn't help her to begin with.  Fenris is...well, Fenris, but he doesn't want 'all mages dead or tranquilled,' he wants them under control not running willy-nilly across the city wreaking havoc.  In fact, one of his banters with Sebastian has him stick up for the mages in the group.

They all have flaws that make them more interesting characters, but if you don't like them, don't play with them.  Fenris, Sebastian and Isabela never need to be recruited.   Merrill can be parked in the Alienage and never spoken to again.  Anders can be left in Dusktown and only pops up at the end.

Romance is also optional content, you don't have to romance any of them and I have had a 'forever alone' Hawke playthrough.

And no, you don't get to romance your sister.  Let it go.  Bioware isn't going to do an incest storyline.  Ick.

Wait, wait...  In Dragon Age 2!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!??!???!?

!

  ?

   ?

     ?

Nobody is gated by gender in DA 2. So... the romances suck equally for all avatars.

These romances are awesome if you are 12.

Otherwise, you get to romance Crabby or Bleedy. Yay.

Straight female options are equally dire though. You get Broody the Elf or dirty abomination Anders.

I have never seen a more dysfunctional angsty cast of characters. Its like the whole game is some sort of mass delusion from the characters in an insane asylum.

that said, its a fun game when drunk!

It's like being in the Inquisition forums all over again!

Well, except for no-one laments the Inquisitor's sister isn't a romance choice.  Thankfully.

I thought Inquisition was a step forward in romance for pixels. Not all option are lunatic fringe, or anime caricatures.

I preferred the options there as well, but you should see the amount of whining about the straight male romances that has occured in those forums.  It's hilarious, and somewhat tragic.

I love how a straight male will always pretend to speak for all straight males. So typical.

1. Your specification of straight males, when everyone gets the same options, is odd and a little irritating.

2. Your descriptions of the characters are shallow and poorly thought out.

3. Don't you know all the cool kids have moved on? They're complaining about the Inquisition LIs now.

My point was that as a hetero male, Romance boils down to just two choices:  Isabela and Merrill, both of which have some serious psychological flaws.  The first is a self-centered good time girl and the latter firmly believes that unlike every other blood mage, she alone "can handle it" and doesn't even consider the consequences of failure on her part in regards to how it affects others.  (Just like every other junkie addict when they first start out.)  Both are VERY unappealing.  As a female hetero character, there are at least more choices, though most are still rather unappealing.  Sebastian at least passes for a Nice Guy, provided you ignore the fact that ultimately he is a religious fundamentalist fanatic (the Maker be praised).

If the player is so shallow that just hopping in the sack is all they are looking for, "Romance" in DA2 is fine.  But if one's idea of Romance is to have a meaningful relationship to go along with the physicality, then forget it.  BioWare seems to be endorsing the moral ethics of a simplistic Hook Up society.  As in, "What does Love have to do with anything?"

I had a similar reaction to all the love interests at the beginning. I can't speak for all the LI options, but at least Isabela evolves over the course of the game if you romance/influence/support her. She doesn't change entirely (thank goodness!) but she does mellow out and you get to see other sides of her that don't involve her backside.

And lastly choir boy Sebastian that despite his extreme religious devotion, has no problem with homosexual affairs.

Most RL "choir boys" who have problems with homosexuality do so because of the Bible. You know, Sodom and Gomorrah and all that. There doesn't appear to be a parallel in the Chant, so it's not surprising he has no problem with homosexual affairs.

But anyway, a rivalmanced Sebastian was my canon Hawke's romance. It was fun, and Sebastian's a decent guy.

I always believed some characters were biased in a way towards a certain gender.

Anders and Isabela are truly equal to both genders, however...

Merril has a lot of "forbidden love" talks with male Hawke due to the fact that their love is not liked by the society and any offspring will be frowned upon as an elf-blooded mongrel.

Fenris seems to be better with male Hawke, in general his dialogues with male Hawke are more realistic.

Of course that's how I saw it.

You don't strengthen your arguments by insulting others, and you seem to not having played their romances to claim they're meaningless and involve no love or moral growth of the relationship.
