It's not a Dating simulator. If you want better romances and more options. Play one of those.
True to some extent, but if they are going to put romances in the game, it's not unreasonable to want quality writing and characters.

I didn't want to start another topic for this so I'll just ask it here.
I finished my first full playthrough a while back and romanced Isabela and no one seemed to bring it up in party banter and I had her in the party a lot. But when I went on to youtube to listen to all the party banters it seemed that Anders and Fenris got it brought up a lot, why is that?

Who brought it up? Was it the other of the two? Because Fenris and Anders are on opposite sides of the mage issue, which is the theme of the second half of the game. So it would make some sense for them to have more to say.
Just look at who the Romance choices are: A gloom-and-doom Anders that is literally possessed by his personal demon. An inept Merrill that is absolutely convinced that "I can handle this", despite a long history of failure and mortal consequences to questionable endeavors, resulting in her becoming a social outcast. A sociopathic Isabella who doesn't care what consequences occur, just so long as she gets what she wants. A bigoted escaped elf slave named Fenris that wants all mages to be dead or Tranquilized. (Yeah, my sister should be euthanized just to satisfy your world view, Fenris.) And lastly choir boy Sebastian that despite his extreme religious devotion, has no problem with homosexual affairs.
With choices like this, I'm surprised that they didn't add a little incest with Bethany. At least she's a nice person. Certainly a lot more appealing than any of the other Romance candidates.
I agree with you there. I'm fully against this social-activist view of equality entitlement, but I do wish 2 had better romance options all across the board. Even for females it was pretty tough. Merrill was the only half-acceptable love option if you went the gay way.

What's wrong with their writing?
I find the comment of the love interests being "sociopath" hilarious. These characters commit violence on a regular basis, in real world terms they are going to be experiencing various forms of trauma which in my opinion would probably be associated with some spectrum of sociopathy. But I get the frustration at not being able to prevent Merrill from her disastrous involvement with demons, although after Morrigains involvement with mirrors, in the initial run I was encouraging research with those particular devices.
The point gets made that the default world view in western culture historically tends to be the european heterosexual male, this tends to manifest in narratives and alternate perspectives are in opposition to this world view. I am not sure how valid this argument is in the context of Biowares RPGs but I suspect this world view is present in the aesthetics of the character design. Not that I am complaining.
When I went onto the DA forum just now, I saw the title "Romance Sucks For Straight..." and I just knew it finished with 'males'. Though I did a double-take and laughed when I saw it was the DA2 subforum, not DAI.
Same complaints just go round and around. Often has the same issue too: a straight guy thinks he's being cheated out of options, and incorrectly presumes that because he doesn't like his options, all straight men dislike their options. Which obviously isn't true, loads of guys love Isabela and Merrill. Just like loads of guys love Cass and Josephine. Being picky doesn't mean the options are bad.

I didn't like any of those characters as romance options either. I felt like each of the romanceable characters were slightly extreme in their views to be characters Id want to spend a lot of time with. There was also the whole thing of Fenris and Anders bemoaning their various plights and spending very little time consoling or showing interest my players own tragic events. I mean in every act a tragedy for my character and those two ignorant oafs barely give her a hug or a kind word.
I much prefer origins and inquisition romance choices and story.
I still cringe when I think of Anders and Fenris moaning and disapproving of every thing.

You are not forced to romance them. Do you know that, don't you?

Merrill mentions it alright, something about she thinks Hawke likes you and smiles a lot. I've never romanced the others so I can't say how often/how they come up in banter.
I always romance Isabela in DA2. I agree with a previous poster that there is development in her personality and attitude as the romance progresses. However, there could be a bit more - headcanon is needed to cover a lot of the "between the lines" stuff. Hawke's comment about her being afraid of love is spot on IMO.
It always amuses me how divisive this issue is in gaming fandoms. Romances are never going to be perfectly portrayed in games by the nature of the medium. It's a side dish to the main story. No one is ever going to be 100% happy, unfortunately. With regards to OP's choice of thread subject, well I'm a gay female so I feel your pain.
That being said I found Isabela's romance enjoyable enough. I'd argue gay male & straight females were "worse off" - both Anders and Fenris drove me simple with their broody moping! (No disrespect to their 'shippers - I did actually like both of them as characters really.)
What's wrong with their writing?
The characters are largely flat and boring on their own. Their interaction with each other, like the party banter, is pretty good. I didn't do all the romances, so maybe they are deeper, but in general the characters are very 1-dimensional.

You're right that romances are probably going to be often not written that great, but at least you can start of with better characters. For example, Morrigan and Leliana are both superior characters to Isabella and Merrill, though Merrill was fun.

Merrill was fine, and sexy.

You think they're worse? I'm curious as to why. Playing for the novelty of having a badass lady warrior who can get the ladies, as I usually do, I was limited to Josephine and Sera. I fully intended to go for Sera before playing, but then I actually met her.
The Josephine one was cheesy and Disney as hell, but it did grow on me. It's probably the romance I'm least attached to of all three games though.
I'd have thought the Cassandra one would be interesting, though? I considering a male Inquisitor playthrough just to try it. I think Inquisition might actually be the one where you could argue straight males ARE at a disadvantage - I've heard no end of good things about Cullen, Bull and Dorian's ones. I'd have argued I was worse off, because you dudes have Cass instead of Sera.
Now i wont be popular here but for me Cass and Josie looked very manly, and their personalities seemed very flat and not overly exciting, Their traits weren't very interesting for me, speech was pretty flat and seemed a little depressing (especially Cass). I'm a straight guy so i wasn't interested in the males at all.
I decided to delete my male Dwarf and make a female one, i did choose Sera eventually most because she was the most out there of the bunch..but still not what i'd call the best of Biowares companions. Origins Companions were by far the most interesting bunch to date for me..
Merrill was bubbly and naive but also sure of herself as a mage she was funny and interesting..
As with others above my favorite character was Bethany she looked great and was a genuinely nice person with real feelings and such, its such a shame they made her as the sister and not the close friend etc, but oh well such is life.

I suspect I wouldn't like Cassandra as a person, or at least my approach to her would probably approximate Varric's opinions. The relative privilege of Josephine is kind of irritating, I did kind of like Sera, despite her prejudices and it probably is appropriate that she has absolutely no interest in me. Dorian is scary. I did keep on hitting on Leliana but that, oh well.
Man, I think I'll go play Leisure Suit Larry.

Did you actually get flirt options with Leliana?? My friend says he did too, though he could have been winding me up.
I really wanted to flirt with her just to be shot down and told I could never compare to her Warden. ![]()

I haven't played Inquisition but I just love this line.
