I'm playing on Hard for my first run, but I haven't had too much trouble so far. So I'm walking around the Hinterlands and all of a sudden I've walked right into a huge dragon O__o Apparently it's nearly twice my level and has over 100k hp. While I'm sure that will be child's play by end game, right now it feels like an impossible amount of hp to deplete. Just out of curiosity, how possible is it to do that kind of fight 3 or 4 levels below that of the creature?

Gear. You can get very powerful gear very early on if you know where to find them. Or even get them earlier if you dont mind mindless boring chest farming at the right places.

Edit:

There is a downside to this though, once you get those gears... you will faceroll 90% of the fights. The remaining 10% will come when you get your specialization.

It is almost impossible to kill that first dragon until post skyhold on nightmare unless you use chest respawning to farm tier 3 schematics from valammar.

I've been playing on hard, too, and killing a dragon up to two levels above me has proven possible given the right optimizations. However, not that one, because at that time you won't have the resources to outfit your party appropriately. There are probably people who can do it, but I'm not one of them. For me, dragon fights only became feasible once I acquired Skyhold.

Like 4 if you're okay with lots of cheese.

I found the hinterlands dragon easy to defeat at level 11 on nightmare even before I started hearts shall burn.. though I had purchased the magister [cube] staff from val royeau and a number of staff upgrades and just spammed the **** out of ice spells with solas and vivian throwing up barriers and also spamming ice spells keeping cassandra defended whilst she drew aggro. If all mages have frost step, they will generally keep out of the dragon's reach.. If they keep dying, remove their ability to use frost step and use it manually when the dragon beats it's wings, will get them into the circle out of danger, if you are close enough, you can get near the scaly to deal 300% frost damage..

Most of character power (by far) comes from gear, not levels.

The downside, as you already heard, is that once you gear up to take down dragons, most other fights will be even easier -- like, you'll never die and most of the time you can get away with using your Inquisitor to loot while the rest of the party fights for you.

You can also get away with OK gear, appropriate damage-resist tonics, and playing well. But that will only get you so far, you'll need a bit of luck as well.
