After freeing the Crossroads on my second playthrough I came across a minor character called Giles, who said he was a history buff for area (or something like that). I don't recall seeing him on my first playthrough, and now I'm on my third I searched high and low for him, but couldnt find him. Has anybody else seen him?

I just thought it was weird that the only character I have seen him on was called Buffy.

I've seen Giles on both my play-throughs and neither of my characters are named Buffy.  :)

That's the guy that can point you in Blackwall's direction, right?  Granted, the quest marker already tells you where to go, but I recall him telling me he'd seen the Grey Warden heading to the lake.

Yeah after you get the Blackwall quests , Giles became more chatty and explains Blackwall saved some refugees from demons etc...

After you recruit Blackwall he disappears.

Oh, I was wondering where he went. I don't think I had any Blackwall dialogue from him so until now I'd just assumed he was a bit random!

Farmer Giles shows up in Origins, in Lothering. Turns out he survived the Blight!

I found out recently he only talks about Blackwall after Leliana gives you the quests to look for Blackwall. So it's pretty easy to miss .

Did he...?  I don't remember him, though "Farmer Giles" makes me think it's a Tolkien reference and not a Buffy one.

I was just about to say... wtf has Buffy got to do with it?

Huh. I am almost positive there's a Giles in Lothering, but I can't find any reference to him on the Dragon Age wiki.

I may have to fire up an old save to see if I'm right nor not.

The OP thought that a character named Buffy might have triggered it as an easter egg to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, since Buffy's mentor on that show is named Giles.  There are some oblique references to that show in the DA games, so it might make sense.

Oh, gods, thank you. Giles (and what he was for) was driving me nuts. He always seemed to disappear once I'd done the Templar/Mage encampments. Never occurred to me that this generally coincided with getting Blackwall.

I thought, at first, Buffy easter egg as well, but he's not very Tony Head Giles-ish...

[David Gaider is a huge Joss Whedon fan--Alistair's personality was based on a cross between Mal from Firefly and Xander Harris from Buffy--many of the cheese references allude to a similar running gag re: cheese in Buffy, as well].

I've been searching for an answer as to why he exists since my first play through, so happy I found this thread and it finally explains it. Thank you!

Farmer Giles, the dragon slayer, is a Tolkien character. I thought the reference was obvious I didn't even bother. It might all be in my head.
