I live in a remote area of the Planet where DAMP isn't particularly popular. So whenever I search for games, I always come across the same fifteen names whom I pretty much got acquainted with one by one OR I end up alone in a lobby as the leader. It is either one or the other.

I have some US friends that I happen to play with once in a blue moon, and I got surprised to see how quickly randoms flock whenever they host. Also, for the most part lag-wise isn't too bad.

I know the Matchmaking system prefers that I play locally, but I am having the unfortunate impression that it is also preventing me to play with numerous people elsewhere.

It should check ping times between host and client, and if the response exceeds a certain limit, it moves on to the next potential host. This can be seen as a "region lock", because the farther distance you are from someone physically, the higher natural ping you will have, thus giving the appearance of "region lock".

Aside, am I the only one that every time I see the word "particularly", I hear Josephine's lovely Spanish accent saying it?

Hard to tell but I do not think there is lock. As you noted there is definitely preference. Another factor could be ping for example. If ping > x do not respond. /shrugs

Region preference is a good idea, in theory. When one lives in a region of negligible playerbase it doesn't help much. I could very well be playing with yankees despite a slightly higher ping rather than be sitting in an empty local lobby.
Perhaps I should bring this to the developers attention somehow.

What kind of ping you get to East/West Coast?

So I did some quick tests: LA 189ms, San Antonio 184ms, Jacksonville 160ms and Boston 142ms.

It is indeed a lilttle high, enough to experience lag in a sensitive game like DAMP, but it is still playable.

I've been matched with Americans, Australians and all kinds of Europeans and I'm in the UK so I doubt it.

I dunno but I am seeing the very same players quite frequently. There's also one guy who I always see join my game midmatch only to leave a minute or so later without fail.

Id say there is some form of lock there because im in Australia and only seem to play with Australians. The worst part is after midnight to 8 in the morning there does not seem to be anyone online. Every time i look for a game it shoves me into a empty lobby lol. I love damp but i work nights so its hard to get on early enough to play with people. Id love to play with some Americans i love there accent. :D

Today I've played with a French dude and I was surprised to see randoms flocking like no tomorrow. It took 2 seconds to fill a lobby and whenever a random leaves, somebody joins instantaneously, on the spot. Here in local Brazilian lobbies, 5-10 minutes on average to gather 4 random players, and playing a trio all the way to 5/5 isn't uncommon - in fact it might as well be the standard outside peak hours, if such a thing even exist.
I've duo all the way to 5/5 at times, unwillingly, but there are no alternatives.

After the French dude had left, I tried looking for games and for 12 times in a row I've got inside an empty lobby as the leader (this is a Sunday afternoon by the way). Only on the 13th attempt I found a lobby, needless so say with the very same players I see everyday.
This matchmaking system is being such a pain in the ass.

That is not all that horribad. I used to play FPS on +250ms (****ing lagger times!).

IF you suspect to be locked (on your IP) you could try to connect through VPN - https://www.softether.org/

i do see the same people a lot, which is weird considering there are thousands of people playing this game.

It does look for the "best possible session", which usually implies a host as close to you as possible since that results in a lower latency or ping.

The only thing that isn't clear to me is if there is an upper limit on the ping that the game deems acceptable, which would effectively be sort of a region lock. If there is, its quite generous considering I've played some insufferably laggy matches.

Would be nice if it could show us several groups at a time where we could opt to join instead of randomly being put in a group to play.

One group basically cursed me out for joining their group and quickly kicked me out.  I didn't deserve that kind of treatment when I have no control who I'm joining.

Ruined my whole DA weekend. I therefore put in my Diablo 3 disk! :-)

Love the idea abit surprised it does not i mean if your a keeper joining a group where one is needed would be good.

I would still choose laggy matches over no matches at all or Threatening duos - pretty much what I am down to thanks to the Matchmaking system.

-snip-

I would say the same, which is kinda shame, because I was spoiled by ME3 and opportunity to play with people from all around the world.

Don't let a few tools ruin your gaming experience.  Whenever I join a lobby and see people trying to kick others because they don't like their class or think they're too low level, I usually just leave and find a nicer group.  I like playing with a wide variety of classes and skill levels- it makes the experience more rich.

IMO, kick function should only be used for extended-AFKs, or people verbally mistreating others.

I dont think that is region locked, but there's something that matches the range of ping or latency i think. I've played many times with people from Bolivia, Peru, Equador and some countries that speak english, but i'm from Brazil. One thing is certain, allways when the host is from out of my country a got a HUGE lag (i didnt checked the ping, but i think thats a cap, because the lag was stable). And its something explained from me, because its the first game that i've played that i got this problem, one probably cause of it could be a low bandwitdth from the host, the minimum required i think that is 10Mbps download to be the host, because with less than it the game is unplayable. It could be a good thing to multiplayer if they make a minimum requirements to be the host!

I'm from Brazil and it seems there's no one playing multiplayer anymore as I always get a empty lobby when a search for a match.

You know, I have no idea why they region locked it in the first place. Low budget for MP ?

I played Final Fantasy XI for years. I logged enough time on Japanese servers to know it can be done....with dedicated servers.

Played Planetside on PC for 2 years on American server. Played great. (1 not the sh1tty 2)

It appears to me that due to the engine you simply cannot get any kind of performance if you are not region locked.

If you play on PC, send me a friend request. Otherwise, good luck.
