- I mean... why not just use the force?

- For that matter, why can't he sense that Leia is a force-sensitive? I mean, he figures out that she's Luke's sister just by staring at him in Return of the Jedi... so why can't he figure out that she's his daughter when he's interrogating her three feet away from him!?

Not to be misunderstood, I love the original Star Wars movies.

Oh, that's what he was using the force for in that scene...

1-Maybe 'cause Vader could force Choke him so badly that he would die, even before answering all his questions. But no matter, he died nonetheless...

2-Luke couldn't hide his feelings when fighting Darth Vader. He was worried about Leia and the people on Endor's Moon, so Vader could sense it. Plus, in the beggining of EP IV, Vader has many concerns in mind to re-capture the plans of the Death Star. And Princess Leia is strong-minded.

There is also the Reason that the story that Ben Kenobi told Luke was true, until the making of Episode V, which Ben said "I told you the truth... In a certain point of view"... Vader was originally meant to be the guy that betrayed Anakin and killed him. Anakin and Vader were different people.

3-They do, And they aren't stupid questions :)

I think the better question is, why does he like choking people so much anyway?

The reason I like to "Force Grip" certain people:

These are silly questions.

1 - Why bother using Force choke when your target is standing directly in front of you? Just reach over and grab his throat. Anakin does this during the duel with Obi-Wan in ROTS as well.

2 - Since neither Vader or Leia knew the truth about each other at that point (I don't think Vader even knew he had any children) there is no reason for Vader to magically discover it when encountering her, especially since he still doesn't seem to know exactly who Luke's sister is after he feels him out in ROTJ.

Vader didn't kill him. He obviously put his hands up to brace himself against the wall.

Because at the time the first movie was shot, there were no Sith. Darth Vader was -the- bad guy and Darth was his name, not a title. Luke and Leia weren't siblings, they were supposed to end up together. Darth Vader also wasn't their father.

That made things kind of awkward once they started with the second movie... ^^

In addition to these (entirely correct) reasons, I would add:

George Lucas wrote Star Wars, and Lawrence Kasdan wrote everything else (that matters.) smiley_innocent.gif

I think one of the worst parts of the retcon was that they made Obi-wan Kenobi into a liar, because he said Skywalker senior was killed by Darth Vader, which they then changed to be false.

My greatest wish for the Star Wars universe is this: Complete reboot and re-shoot all the movies as realistic animation. That way you can stay true to the original three movies (while fixing a few things and perhaps updating the technology somewhat) and you can have a young Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa etc for their adventures. They could still do the voices.

The EU has some great storylines you could make into movies (and many very silly ones we better ignore), for example the Thrawn trilogy.

Personally I think it would be a disservice to the fans if we never got to see Luke meet Mara Jade, if Han and Leia never got married and their kids never existed...

Speaking of retcon, the prequel movies (*hissss* Take it away!) contradict some of the EU novels, for example when it comes to the origins of the Death Star. That's something they could clear up as well. Better prequels would be awesome. Right now they don't make sense at all. Hey, Kamino cloned an army... where did they get the necessary resources on their secret, hidden planet? That would have left a paper trail a mile wide.

Let's say they managed that... where did all the Star Destroyers come from? The armor and weapons? All the vehicles? The Republic didn't have them and they sure as hell would have noticed if someone amassed an arsenal for an army.

Here, my contributions to silly questions that keep you up at night. ;)

The real answer is that Lucas was making stuff up as he went along, even though he tried to deny it in later interviews. Originally Vader and Anakin Skywalker were two entirely separate people and Luke and Leia were not related. When Obi Wan tells Luke that Vader killed his father, he was telling the truth. Or at least he was before The Empire Strikes Back was filmed. The decision to combine Anakin and Vader into the same character was made between the original Star Wars film and The Empire Strikes Back.

Sometimes Lucas making stuff up on the fly worked out for the better (the reveal at the end of ESB was one of the greatest twists in movie history), and sometimes it did not. (Luke kissing Leia)

Vader not being able to detect that Leia is his force-sensitive daughter is one of the instances where Lucas making the story up as he went along misfired.

I don't like sand. Its course, and ruff, and irritating. And it gets everywhere. Everything here is soft and smooth.
