Recently I started playing DA:Origins, and since I remember using some mods back when I played it a couple of years back I checked DA Nexus for some now. In short, there are a lot of mods. Those that change looks of NPCs, those that change gameplay, etc. I only use two, basically one - white teeth mode, and a .mop file for a male face that changes one of the presets, the one that doesn't require any other mods. So, I have a couple of questions:
1) Do you support mods or do you think they "break" the immersion game developers went for?
2) If you do like them, what are your must have recommendations?
3) Since this game is based on imports, do some of the mods (new talent trees, romance for all, etc) corrupt the save files? For example, there is a mod for male characters to romance Alistair - if you import that in DA2, what is the result?
Thanks in advance :)

I use a few graphical mods and bug fixes. I like gameplay so I don't want to change it and the game has already a bunch of equipment to choose from, I don't need to add more to that.

I'm not against mods, but I do avoid using them on my first playthrough. That said I admit I had some mods installed on my first run:

- Hair mods

- Arcane Warrior unsheathed weapon casting

- White teeth

- Respec Potion

But really, as you go you'll see things you would like to see changed, little aspects that could be improved and all. I say go crazy with mods! Some purists will start moaning about "disrespecting the artistic integrity" and all that jazz but honestly? Personal opinion, I myself couldn't care less about people going crazy over my Sword and Shield STEN :D

I use an unholy number of mods, and have made a few of my own, so obviously I'm in favour of giving the player the option to mod or not, as they see fit. Whether mods break immersion is up to the individual player and their wants and needs.

3) Since this game is based on imports, do some of the mods (new talent trees, romance for all, etc) corrupt the save files? For example, there is a mod for male characters to romance Alistair - if you import that in DA2, what is the result?

Some mods will corrupt saves, especially if they are removed/uninstalled midgame... DA:O saves retain a lot of information and there is no way to 'clean' a save once things are baked into it; that is especially true of mods that add content like new spells/talents/classes or dramatically rework the existing ones. Those things are not reflected in DA2, though, and so are immaterial for import purposes. I've never used any of the gay!Alistair mods, but I recently completed a DA2 run with an import of a non-canon Amell Queen of Ferelden, and all references to her (including the codex entries) correctly referred to her as both a mage, and as Alistair's wife. That non-canon world state cannot be recreated in the DA Keep as a DA:I world state for import, however.

I like mods ... I suppose the most "cheaty" ones that I use would be the "Golden Goose" and "Get any Item Interface Script" (I'm considering dumping the Golden Goose as I'm having some trouble resisting the lure.), most of the rest I'd consider tweaks, including 1/2 Cheaper Combat Magic ... Quicker Shapechanging ... Werewolf Shop ... Apathetic Morrigan. Then there's the Quest Fixes and visual Mods.

I mostly stay away from the cosmetic mods because most of them are nasty or unappealing to me. My favored mods are stuff that affects gameplay.

I support the mods in general.

As far as what ones I have, just some basic stuff really.  Add item and add item with material, detailed tooltips, advanced tactics, respec potion, and then some fixes.

I like mods a lot. I tend to use 'game fix mods' and cosmetic mods mostly, altho' the mod for a storage chest in the camp is a must have for me.

Lady Karrakaz has a lovely review and guide for many excellent mods.

I think mods are the best part of PC gaming.

That said I tend to avoid mods that outright change the characters appearance, gameplay tweaks and interface improvements for the most part.

Checking my DAO files I'd say auto_loot is my most recommended mod.

also recommended:

personal annoyance remover - gets rid of most of the sustained buff sparky effects

lockbash - less frustration for times you cannot have a rogue

skip the fade (after you run through the game at least once)

I use a lot of mods. For me, it just helps to extend the replay value. Skip the fade is a must. (I hate the fade in all 3 DA games.) Lockbash because it just doesn't make sense not to be able to just break the damned things open. I also use the get any item mods just for those odd occurances when the game glitches out and a particular enemy who is supposed to drop an item doesn't.

Also, some gender turning mods... gender favor switch? Ya know, so a female warden can romance Morrigan.   That of course does NOT transfer into the Keep, though, so KEEP that in mind if you use those.

I wholeheartedly support mods.

My mod usage consists of:
* Character creation mods (primarily hair)
* Large selection of texture replacements
* Large selection of fan-made bug fix mods
* Respec mod
* Dragon Age Redesigned (Recommended version) to make NPCs have a consistent appearance
* A faster combat mod (affects NPCs and PC)

Other than the respec mod, I don't use any mods that add anything to the game (weapons, armor, etc), any mods that drastically change the developers' intent, or any sort of cheat mods. But this is just my preference; I don't care if anyone else wants to use those.

... I recently completed a DA2 run with an import of a non-canon Amell Queen of Ferelden, and all references to her (including the codex entries) correctly referred to her as both a mage, and as Alistair's wife.

That's amazing, I'm surprised DA2 recognized it!

I thank you all again for your impressions, opinions, suggestions, etc.  Since this is my second play through, basically the first since I don't remember much from the one I did couple of years back, I won't use mods apart from the ones I have already. For the next one however, I will check out the ones you guys use  :D

Especially considering how unpredictable DA2 importing can be... I've had more trouble with 'normal' imports.

I use dozens of mods. It's why I played DAO at least twenty times, while I played DA2 only 4 times.

Most of them are cosmetic mods, giving you new skins, colours and hairstyles, armours and weapons. I like to make new morphs, replacing NPCs etc..And then there are few 'fixes' I couldn't play without - like removing glittering spell effects, weapon trails and ground circles, hidden interface during screenshots, shutting up the nug when Leli sings, making Shale's steps quieter, daytime camp, placing swords and daggers at hips...

And then I have mods for Zev - Zevran ASAP, Zevring, ZDF, Zevran Romance Scenes, Zevran Open Wedding... :D

I do have a few 'cheats', like adding a points via console, and Add any item deluxe, but I use those only when I create a character just for one screenshot and want them to wear a specific armour in it.

I don't have any mod that changes the game. Well, currently. :D I had a playthrogh where I played as Zevran, where I played a child, etc.. It's a lot of fun. :)

Shared with angry DAI players so I wanted to make sure shared here too.

Mod that allows you to dodge some the more egregious attacks in DAO.

Very good question.

Mods are a double-edged sword for me.   There's a difference between QUEST mods and other mods (like appearance).   My experience with QUEST mods in DAO screwed me up.   After my talk with Flemeth, Morrigan would not (and could not) join my crew.   So I deleted the mods (from My Documents), deleted the saves, deleted the game, & re-downloaded it to get it to work.   Nearing the end of the game I added the Nexus QUEST mods.

In my experience , about every other QUEST mod is dysfunctional.   That is, there's no way to enter or activate it -- including the shabby documentation about how.   I go to Youtube to see what I'm doing wrong -- so Youtube shows a SIGN in the market place to examine first.   No sign for me -- so I have to uninstall it.    Another QUEST is I've cleared out all the dragons -- roamed the area thoroughly for anything else -- then to collect a "reward" I return to the quest giver and there is no dialogue option.   He says "any luck yet?" and the only response is "not yet".   Very frustrating.

The Bloodmage quest is NOT intuitive compared to the pay-for-DLCs.   You've got to go back-and-forth talking with different people and when told to go to the Dead Trenches -  you know-Orzimar (misspelled), well -- it is a DIFFERENT iteration of it.   Glad for the Youtube walkthrough.   Another quest (I played a prince) with another stupid Judas betrayal storyline -- then the story ended & left me hanging.

What I like about the mods is that hundreds of folks participate in making the game better instead of a handful of original game designers.   Skyrim now has 38k+ mods alone (my next game).   My suggestion is first to go to camp and do a major SAVE (not quick save).   Then install your mod, play it, then delete the mod and return to the CAMP save.   Yes there are some goodies you can pick up (in the mod) but let it go.   I believe the less quest mods SIMULTANEOUSLY active -- the better chances of not crashing the game.   Some folks however have literally hundreds of mods.

Good luck

Most of the quest mods are garbage, to be honest. Or bad. Or, at best, average. I haven't played one I would've actually liked. Some of the best were alright, but they didn't really add anything new to the game.

The quests/mods that add new party members are the worst. Even if they're done well, no crashes or bugs or anything, and even if you could see the love the creators have poured into their project and you would really, REALLY want to love their mod, they always seem have utterly terrible writing. Bad voice acting I can tolerate, dialogue options that take me right out of character I do not. Or if the mod makes party members act out of character... while sometimes funny, it's mostly just plain stupid.

But I'm really hard to please and pretty much demand professional-like quality from mods, lol. I really liked Ser Gilmore NPC mod though, although it, too, had kinda bad dialogue options at times. But it's definitely the best additional party member mod I've encountered.

That said, I love cosmetic mods a lot! And mods that add new scenes with love interests. And fixes. Got to get all the fixesss.

Here's a list of Sienna's Absolute Must-Have-Mods-She-Cannot-Live-Without: :D

* Helmet hack to toggle helmets on and off

* Improved Atmosphere

* Dragon Age Redesigned (lore-friendly, not the kitchy gloss stuff)

* Advanced Tactics

* Numerous hair & tattoo mods for the cc

* Morrigan & Leliana Sacred Ashes presets (I've gotten so used to them by now that I can't bear playing with the default girls anymore!)

All of these mods hardly break immersion. I admit I have downloaded MASSES of other mods aswell (armour, dialogue, romance, yada yada), but these I have mentioned here are the absolute essentials!

I used Cmess' IRS Alistair mod, ZDF and MRP.  I also had the Cullen Romance mod, Hugs, Ser Gilmore companion by Immortality. Some mods may require some alterations to play nice with others--check the readme's.  FTG UI and The Winter Forge to alter the look of my interface and allowed me to add and alter any gear i wanted to into the game.  Skip the Fade was the only mod I used that significantly altered a part of my game.

I used a lot of texture/cosmetic mods for hair, makeup etc.

All facial mods for PC and NPCs I created myself in the toolset.

My Origin days are probably over though.  I liked the story, but the combat and silent protagonist are too 'dated' for me to enjoy now.

I love mods.  The main ones I use are: ZDF, MRP, IRS:A, Gatekisses, ZevRing, ZevranASAP, and generally mods that fix item drops or other minor issues.

Oh, and the ones that let you upgrade the Cousland Family Blade (HN origin) and borrowed longsword (City Elf origin).

Mods I try to avoid are: add-on quests/scenarios, lore-altering mods and cheat-type mods.  (I make an exception for the mod that fixes the Shaperate's Blessing loot, because if I removed it I'd probably forget to re-add it after completing the Shaperate's Blessing quest.)

I neither support or don't support mods in general. Other people can do whatever the heck they want. I don't care. I myself will use mods only for three purposes: to fix actual problems in the game, as in bugs; to fix easily fixable annoyances I have with gameplay mechanics; and to upgrade the graphics if the game is old enough that it actually becomes an issue (really, Morrowind is the only game that I use extensive graphics mods for).

For DA:O, I use ZDF (actually a general fix for dialogue-related bugs), Blackblade drop fix, a pack with some extra hair/skin/eye tones (I forget which one), and a weapon resizer (because the outsized weapons bug me). Also the Silverite Mine fix, just in case. I like the mechanics of DA:O, and the graphics aren't old enough to need much updating, so it's really just bug fixes.

As far as the save imports go, well, half of the important import stuff to do with my 'canon' Warden is apparently bugged in DA II anyhow (and I doubt I'm going to be replaying DA II -- even if I do, I'll probably keep importing the same world state), and everything for DA:I onwards is through the Keep. I'm not worried about that.

i think there are 3 mods in DA that makes a difference for me

lockbash, blood magic activator, and most important, the improved experience mod, so i actually reach max lv before game end
