Who cares how some random page on the Internet defines a word?

Who cares about how you define an RPG?

You are wrong. DOOM isn't an RPG although it would be according to your incorrect definition.

They are all RPGs, because ARPGs are also RPGs.

No, ARPGS aren't RPGs they are a subgenre.

DA:I is an action RPG. DA:O and DA2 aren't action RPGs. Accept it.

You do, obviously.

You are wrong too BTW. DOOM isn't an RPG although it would be according to your incorrect definition.

No, it would not be an RPG because it lacks powerups.

No, ARPGS aren't RPGs they are a subgenre.

Which means they are also RPGs.

Yep. That means they are all RPGs.

I don't see what the big problem is. It's pretty obvious that if something is an action RPG, then it's also an RPG. It's right there in the name, after all.

I thought you said this was a hopeless cause?

Action RPGs aren't action games.

Irrelevant, because one word is a noun and the other is an adjective.

Action RPGs aren't RPGs.

Yes they are. You said it yourself.

they are a subgenre.

Action RPGs are Action RPGs. A hybrid of the aformentioned, a subgenre.

But that also means they are RPGs.

And now you are going to tell me that Action RPGs are RPGs and action games at the exact same time, amirite?

Is there something wrong with that?

No, at this point you're supposed to say "fine, you can have the last word".

My, that's a colourful attempt not to have the last word.

No, it is not an RPG because it fails to have violence, bling and powerups.

OK forget that game, now Final Fantasy VII is surely an RPG, it has HGS. No doubt about it.

AKA, violence.

Ultraviolence, it's in the future.

No as in RPG.

I suppose Diablo could be some kind of a Regional Planning Guidance.

Yeah, that's just logic.

Well clearly, to point out to the audience that all RPGs have HGS. Elementary!

Action RPGs aren't RPGs.

Action RPGs are action RPGs. A hybrid of the aformentioned, a subgenre if you like.

And now you are going to tell me that Action RPGs are RPGs and action games at the exact same time, amirite?

That's how I see it.

Action RPG is an RPG. Subgenre -> Proper Subset (in this case)

ARPG  ⊊ RPG  ==  every ARPG is RPG. There are RPGs that are not ARPGS

More people seems to think like that also becasue:

http://en.wikipedia....le-playing_game

"Action role-playing games (abbreviated action RPG, action/RPG, or ARPG) form a loosely defined subgenre of role-playing video games"

Well it has that too, granted - but that could be a coincidence. And perhaps not needed.

Remove the violence from that game, and it's more or less FF7, but remove the HGS, well a great deal is lost.

It is absolutely needed, because RPGs are defined by violence, powerups and bling.

Remove the violence from that game, and it's more or less FF7,

But it would no longer be an RPG.

Could you pc fanboys be more entitled!?!? Why don't all you guys just go back to playing your shitty mmos & boring mobas & leave superior game (dragon age inquisition) alone for us people who actually like it. You are all nostalgic geeks yearning for something that no longer exists & never will again so stop bitching & go away!

Mechanically me2 was miles ahead of me1. So many rose colored glasses when it comes to that game. DA 2 though I agree was a step backwards.

They may have overadjusted slightly as far as inventory management and suchlike, but I agree: ME2 was more polished, and to me, more interesting to control.  ME1 had many, many, many repeat maps of "maze of boxes" that you found doing the Rubber Baby Buggy Bumper planet missions.  Combat got super simple in ME1 once you realize that there were three main steps to enemy AI:  1) cluster together, 2) charge in a mob, 3) get blasted by shotguns.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some tooling around in the Moon Rover.  But the overall experience in ME2 streamlined some things without "streamlined" being a euphemism for "removed all the interesting bits for consoles."

You could do the same. Stop bitching and go back to playing your superior game. Why waste time here if you could be playing this marvellous piece right now. I am unable to appreciate its greatness so I am sitting here, but why are you ?

Some of us have lives you know! We can't all sit in basements playing mobas 24 hours a day like all you glorious pc master racers do. I just off work! Im watching friends while typing this right now in preparation for bed.

Now if you excuse me. I'm going to watch a little more friends before I go to bed. You go back to being miserable because DAI couldn't be like a game released 20 ago. /:

hehehe, nice.

DAO was released around....wait for it......5 years ago.

See how fast the Dragon Age series has gone downhill? 5+ years later, DA2, failure.....DAI, medicore.......not 20 years later.....hehehe. I like that.

DAI is an action hack and slash repetitive game with some rpg elements in it. Not a true rpg but still a sub genre of a rpg none the less.

In a rpg, you shouldn't be so limioted to what you can do, like DAI. All the many features and options that DAO has and other rpg's, add those to DAI.....this is 2014 / 2015 afterall and using the latest frostbite 3 engine.....if an old game like DAO from 5+ years ago got the forumla right, DA2 and DAI should of done it even better instead of worse, less you can do, simplified and hack and slash.

yes, DAI is a sub genre of a rpg game but its a hack and slash dumbed down action game with some rpg elements in it. Not a proper rpg game by any means.

If DAI was a proper rpg game like users claim, it would have the following at launch:

- storage chest in each camp and in personal quarters

- campsite

- you can get married, divorced, have an affair, option for kids

- have pets

- chat with party characters whenever you want

- chat with romanced character whenever you want

- buy gifts to give to party characters to annoy and romance whenever you want

- interact with NPC's to an extent

- open barrels, lids

- open chests, not just click on it

- move pots and look under them, key? note?

- eat food for health and give to party members for health (find and buy in markets)

- change armor, weapons and items on the fly with party members

- swim, dive and look for items, chests, etc.

- experience current, tides and aggressive fishes, kill them

- watch other boats go up and down the coast and in the distance

- watch fish jumping

- birds and seagulls....

- buy a boat and explore whenever you want

- buy some land, build a place, customize inside and outside

- chose how long you want to nap or sleep

- watch a sunset and sunrise

- real time sky and weather effects

- if you wade in water, chest deep, you don't die

- scale all the way up and down mountains, not just die

- make a fire for the campsite, chop logs, crackling, embers, sparks, smoke.....

- randomly woken up from animals

- not a hack and slash game

- not repetitive

- no useless filler sub quests

- long game and not another short game

- all the things that DAO had should of been in DAI and from other real rpg's instead of taking away, simplifing and resctricting what you can do

- quite linear at times

- large empty areas to explore

- open and close barn doors and gates instead of nothing and jump over it

- be able to continue with romanced character after main quest is finsihed instead of nothing

- being able to walk over small rocks, logs, debris instead of getting stuck and have to jump over them.....really?!

A hack and slash simplified action game with some elements of rpg in it is what we got. There is a big difference.

I hope Bioware patches these issues back into DAI and that would go a long way to make DAI a proper rpg, but we'll see......they still haven't fixed the PC issues after patch 3.....

Of course it's an RPG. It has all the necessary elements: violence, powerups and bling. Just read upthread where this is laid out in great detail.
