Or, you know, anyone who has basic knowledge of computers.

Because I don't.

Anyway, I think my graphic's card is giving me problems. Recently I've been watching videos on Youtube and suddenly the computer freezes, leaving an eerie stuttering sound. After holding the Esc button for some time and panicking, the screen goes dark for a split second and then a message appears on the bottom right corner of the screen saying the AMD controller something had a problem and recovered.

This is constantly happening.

I have updated the drivers. I tried updating them again but the thing said the latest version was installed.

The graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 4xxx Mobile. ( I do not know the rest of the numbers )

So, if you would stop arguing with us the console peasants, please help me.

You bless it with Holy Water from the River Jordan.

Actually I don't know...

But you might be right, I've had weird problems like that and it's been my gfx card.

Remove it and replace it with some cheap crap and see if the problem still occurs.

Unless somebody here actually knows what it is.

Well... First thing, check your PSU. Then boot up system in safe mode and find any AMD drivers and uninstsall them. The re-install them

This could be a TDR issue with windows or a PSU issue. Maybe check you RAM too, but this sounds like a faulty driver issue. So I think this might help-

Tomshardware.com is a great sight and I've been using it since I got into PC gaming back in 2002, lol. You'll probably find better advice and knowledge there than from here, as those guys are truly PC Master Race members.

Good luck.

Oh....

One more thing, and really... This can't be said enough.

Sounds like you have a laptop.

I'd just send it back for repair.

Oh... mobile. Hurr durr, hurr durr.

Yeah, OP, just send it back or something. Laptops are a ****** to fix and repair by yourself.

Always go with desktop for future reference.

I use both nVidia and AMD, and I still find things like this funny. Even my cheap-a**ed friends who use mostly AMDs find them funny.

BMW: "My room is freezing."
Friend: "Just leave your computer on."
BMW: "I can't, it's not an AMD."
Friend: "Hey, f*** you! LOL"
BMW: "LOL"

lol, mad cuz bad. I'm sure the 390x will be a great 700 dollar card that's a tad bit faster than the GTX 970.... And twice the price!

There's maybe nothing wrong. It's a laptop. It's perhaps supposed to be like that.

Is it possible that you can provide more details? Like the duration before it crashes, temperatures, etc.

At any rate, if you really have uninstalled/reinstalled drivers and sure that the GPU isn't faulty. It might be another hardware problem. Namely the hard disk. This is quite common for laptops as they tend to come under a lot of heat stress.

I'd like to add as well that you might find much better luck on actual tech-support sites like tomshardware or something like it.

EDIT: I've been going thru my old notes and I forgot to mention that drivers can conflict with one another. If you got the time and patience for it, you should try looking into other drivers. Like audio, for example.

You can also try a system restore to see how it works. Revert back to a point where things were working normally and stay there. It's not unusual that companies stop providing proper drivers to their laptop/mobile products.

If you're intent on squeezing out more from your hard ware, you can try giving leshcatlabs a visit and find one of the community made drivers. Be warned, some of them work wonders and some of them will mess stuff up. Most common being light settings, sleep functionality, and battery issues.

Well, in this case, OP is simply trying to watch Youtube. So that analogy doesn't quite work.

More like trying to kill a sheep with a nuclear bomb.

Hey. I take pride in the fact that my heating bill is low in the winter. Watching movies and playing ME have kept me warm through out this frosty season #AMD4LYFE!

Now once June hits......

Anyway try uninstalling and re-installing drivers or do a system restore. Someone already mentioned it, but I do the same thing when trying to trouble shoot sometimes. If you do a system restore you might be able to "back track" what it was that caused the problem. Perhaps some in compatible software you may have installed.

Have you offered any prays? Or Indulgences to the all mighty Gaben? You defiantly need to do that first before working on your PC.

lol you´re an idiot. the 290X already is as fast as the 970, so the 390X will be at least ~25% faster. oh and btw, at least in the last years it were always the cards made by nvidia which were "only a tad bit faster" but "twice" as expensive as AMD-cards. troll elsewhere, fanboy.

Having had numerous gaming laptops (due to lack of space for a superior desktop) I'm pretty sure your graphic card itself is starting to die.

I always had that issue when my cards started to die. Granted I've only had Nvidia cards, but I don't see why it would be different with AMD.

Meh. I'm currently running Crossfire R9 290s for a temporary setup and it's alright. It's certainly not perfect, I sometimes get weird flickering or performance issues when I play+record but the videos come out butter smooth 1080p 60 fps, better than my gaming experience lol. However, the scaling is fairly good and the Omega version drivers brought some much needed features to the table.

Second hand R9 290 for $265 (which I got) is $150 cheaper than what you will find for a second hand GTX 970. For 85-90% of the performance, that's pretty handy. At least here in Kangarooland. IDK how that matches up with Burgerland prices.

LOL.

I don't know why people buy reference cards if they aren't going to watercool them tbh. Prices on newegg for aftermarket R9 290Xs are cheaper than the reference model.

As for the OP, uninstalling/reinstalling your graphics drivers are your first port of call. If that doesn't work, you can either get it repaired by a professional, or consider buying a new system. It's quite possible that your system is just starting to die and nothing can be done to fix it for the long term. It's also quite possible that your graphics card is glitching out because it is being overheated. Years of dust build up and/or poor maintenance could cause your laptop to overheat even during mundane tasks. It wouldn't be the first time. What's the temperature of your GPU?
