Having had numerous gaming laptops (due to lack of space for a superior desktop) I'm pretty sure your graphic card itself is starting to die.

I always had that issue when my cards started to die. Granted I've only had Nvidia cards, but I don't see why it would be different with AMD.

Aye, sounds like GPU. Software, or hardware problem? Make a clean install for the drivers and check again. If hardware, the question is, is the GPU failing because the GPU is dying, or if it's just not getting enough juice from a failing battery.

Have you noticed the battery life decreasing significantly? If that's the case, you can go make a quick check at a repair shop whether the battery is still good. If not, put it into good hands at a repair shop and let them check. Could be power connectors, or in worst case the GPU dying.

4xxx is a pretty old GPU so I don't know if you'd still find a good one to replace (some laptops can replace/upgrade their GPUs in a very limited capacity (connectivity issues mostly), Alternatively, if you find out that it indeed is the GPU, you can look up on the particular model and find out of you can bake it. If you can bake it, buy a new system anyway, as baking is only a short term solution, only fit to make the GPU pass some time until you got a new system.

I think I bought this piece of dung back in 2009. Anyway, the battery is completely dead. I have to have this thing permanently plugged in.

There is nothing wrong with it before or after it freezes. The temperature is normal. Oh, little curiosity: Firstly, here is the unholy face of it

0_1425_sz_1_i_214860_00.jpg

Now, down in the lower wards, near the bottom, there is the grille where heat comes off or whatever. You see... the grill is closed. There are no holes, like they're filled in with plastic. I've put some research as to why that is so, and there are even tutorials on how to take the back off to saw them open yourself.

Anyway, if you want to laugh at the specs, here they are:

The processor is a puny Pentium Dual-Core T4400 at some outstanding  (get ready for it) 2.20 gigahertz!

The RAM is of 4 gigabytes.

I don't know the rest.

I think this is it. This might be the excuse to buy another computer. One where I can maybe play games.

I will restore it to some time ago and see if it does anything. I will let you people know.

Thank you for all the answers. Except the apparent argument about Nvidia VS Amd.

If it is a hardware problem, it is probably not worth it to get it fixed.

You might as well buy a new laptop or even better, build a dedicated gaming desktop.

However, you're only trying to watch Youtube videos, so I still think it's driver/software related.

So, tried restoring it to various points and none of them worked. It just says it wasn't successful.

What do I do now? How do I check the drivers as you people say?

Quick update:

It now freezes for about a second outside of Youtube.

It still freezes on Youtube.

To check your driver's version, you simply right click on your desktop and open the Catalyst Control Center, if not, you can try "Graphics Properties." Once you've opened Catalyst Control Center, you simply go to the "Information" tab to see your Catalyst's version.

I think your best bet is to uninstall your driver and then run a driver cleaner tool like CCleaner or AMD Clean Uninstall Utility to completely remove the video driver related files and then reinstall the latest Catalyst.

If that doesn't solve it, I guess you'll just have to try other stuff like using older Catalyst builds (like Catalyst 13). You even can do a Windows clean install as your last resort, but definitely try as many older drivers as you can before you decide to do something like that.

I told you not to play video games on laptop. Or anything heavier than KOTOR II.

Now pay the price... you fought the system, and you murdered it.

So, I used AMD's cleanup tool to uninstall the drivers. Tell you how it goes from now on.

Did you try an older driver like I suggested?

Wait, a 290X is loud and hot? Gee, mine must be broken.

Edit: I used to be annoyed by your alternative, over-large text, but that IT DID NOT WORK made me lol.

The 290X IS hot and the reference cooler was pretty loud, that's why most manufacturers dumped it as soon as they had their own coolers.

How about we stop the nonsensical AMD/Nvidia marketing war and return to the topic at hands, which appears to be a rapidly decaying laptop.

Perhaps that's why, I've got a Diamond or something.

You mean a new PC that can play Youtube without crashing. Nowadays, you don't even need a video card for that.

I had a similar issue not to far back. Driver issue. Use a wiper to clear out all drivers than reinstall the right one.

Yeah, the "right one." You've got that right.

Since OP has a fairly old laptop, rather than installing the latest driver, I still think he'll have better luck with an older video driver.

Can't he just check his system info to see what card is actually in there?

And I did find an installer that had an auto-detect that worked. Granted, I spent 2 hours getting rid of the bloatware, but my PC worked again! :D

If you have absolutely no idea what you're doing, you can just let Windows Update pick up the video driver for you. If not, you can simply download the Auto-detect Utility from AMD's website.

AMD unified drivers like Catalyst should work on any modern Radeon GPUs. So even if you have no idea what GPU you have, as long as you download one for your OS, it should install and work just fine, but don't take my word for it.

The Windows Update is what broke my drivers.
