How to optimize necromancers for NM?

Dorian is one of my 2 favorite companions but I can not find a way to make his specialization shine. Its not that necromancers are terrible, its just their inferior to riftmage and KE from my playtesting.

Riftmage:

  • Infinite mana as long as youre doing damage
  • 30% weaken! Even a half built tank could tank level 20+ dragons
  • the best aoe setup spell in the game , pull of the abyss which combos with static cage, fire mine, any aoe really
  • Huge synergy with flashpoint allows you to bypass cooldowns and spam spells
  • Can induce deep sleep combo with weaken+static cage
  • Strong but somewhat clunky focus

KE:

  • Immortal due to fade shield/fade cloak
  • 50% mana regeneration as long as your near an enemy
  • Ridiculous damage output with zero cooldown blades
  • Able to constantly churn out empowered fire spells due to fade shield
  • Ultimate sandbag focus

Necromancer:

  • Lack of truly synergistic passive like fade shield or restorative veil or a strong damage dampening ability like weaken
  • sandbag ghosting on death
  • strong persistent damage followed by an aoe explosion that does not do listed damage
  • strong aoe panic
  • Interesting focus

So how do I build Dorian in a way to synergize with the rest of my party (tank, tempest, rift mage) besides just relegating him to do CC with horror/ice spells and revival support play?

I like grabbing firewall and lightning cage for dorian. Cage works as a pseudo pull of the abyss to set up your Walking Bomb. Even better if you bring a rift mage along for the real thing. Once you've gathered enemy mobs up use walking bomb, and either focus the mob to detonate it (tell your group to attack target), or just detonate it prematurely to knock everyone out, paralyze, and have the dot applied to them (great synergy with static cage).

Firewall is there for the damage buff vs. panicked and it also has good synergy with cage. For passives I grab winter stillness (after fadestep) early as you need it for mana and cooldown reduction. With my final points I usually grab rejuvenating barrier.

Finally, I personally skip Spirit Mark as I find the AI too stupid to be of much use and the damage is underwhelming. This spec relies on chaining kills for damage/regen and making the most out of walking bomb + panic damage. It requires more team support but it can definitely pay off with spectacular aoe damage and good CC.

Edit: Forgot to mention, you definitely wanna get weaken, if you dont wanna bring a rift mage just spec your warriors for it (battlemaster tree).

+1 to Spirit Mark being so-so. You have to be very, very careful who you mark (mages and tower shields are especially risky), because it's a party member you can't control that's still able to do friendly fire. My headcanon is that this is their sneaky way of avenging their own death.

I used it anyway, because when it works it's very entertaining. Plus it does spirit damage, which some enemies are weak to.

But from a utility perspective, I'd say the main things to grab are Haste (of course), Power of the Dead, and Blinding Terror. Because of Death Siphon, he's very tough to kill, so naturally his abilities are weaker to compensate. Bring along an assassin with Mark of Death so that you have control over when the on-death buffs get applied.

It kind of seems like you end up using him mostly as for his passives and support through the main mage skill trees. I definately like static cage + pull and I set his AI to prioritize casting this to combo with Solas.

I think relying on enemy kills as a source of mana is more useful on normal and casual when enemies die quickly but less so on NM when everything has a huge amounts of health. Mana restoration should be based on when enemies get feared rather when they die and would fit the necromancer theme much better rather than a paltry 20 mana per kill which is really nothing compared to restorative veil or combat clarity.
