I actually like how they look in inquisition "sigh" but each to their own I guess.

they where in Inquisition?... oh right mistook them for a different skinned bandit the first time. And don't really get to seem them upclose at any point unless I go out of my way to focus my camra on them during combat no less...

the old version of the darkspawn and also mostly THE ONE from awakaning where more awesoem then the spooky rip off vampire darkspawn from the da2

I completely agree, first time I saw them was like 'really?'

I actually prefer the redesigned look.

The Genlocks are actually imposing now instead of near-comedy characters like they were in Origins.

The Hurlocks are a mixed bag, I admit. But the Hurlock Alpha is great at capturing the feel of the Darkspawn.

The Ogres actually look like they are related to the Darkspawn now.

The Shrieks, while not seen ingame, actually look very good. Especially the Shriek Alphas.

They look a bit better in Inquisition than they did in DA2, but that's just my opinion. I'd like to see what the rest of the Darkspawn look like in Inquisition, since we only see hurlocks, hurlock alphas, and ghouls. Maybe we'll get a story dlc centered on the Deep Roads or something.

I agree completely. I'm adding this point to the list over here. You're welcome to drop by and check. http://forum.bioware...sible-spoilers/

So they release a free DLC that completely overwrites the textures for a minor enemy?

Totally disagree. They all look ridiculous since DA:2. Origins did such a good job in establishing the dark spawn as the evil horde that threatened all living beings on thedas and the looks of the dark spawn creatures were the biggest contributer to that and it worked. They looked brutal, dangerous and actually like a "horde" which perfectly fitted to a high fantasy-setting, specially to a grand scale war. Now with their fisherman hats, their insanely huge hammers and their stupid appearance they look like the idiot villains from some marvel comic that will die by slipping over a banana peel. And sorry that doesn't work for me. Not in DA:2 and not in Inquisition.

You know I think this was decision based on a whim.

If I remember correctly the reason was that they thought the first Dragon Age looked to "generic" and they wanted to stand out more. The whole redesign of DA2 was to have instant recognition, a DA2 screenshot had to be clearly identified as Dragon Age.

it could have been a good idea. But when you ask a developement team to develop a complex story RPG, completely overhaul the underlying mechanism, create a new UI AND redesign everything in 18 months, something has to give.

How are zombies in insanely ornate armour terrifying? The darkspwn were a comical grab bag of fantasy races, going from zombies (hurlocks) to gremlins (genlocks) to whatever the hell shrieks were intended to be in DAO.

They looked like a best of in someone's fan fiction, and their apparance made no sense. How do hurlocks have footsoldiers with armour more ornate than King Cailan?

Not that the chalkspawn in DA2 are any better. But at least they all look the same and have a level of metallurgy that fits the lore.

Well not like the ones in DA2 are terrifying but the reason the Darkspawn have such ornate armour is because they have the best gouls blacksmiths they could kidnap. Also since in the first game they where the main enemy and you fight them 80% of the time its just underwhelming when you see how ugly your former enemies are especially emmisaries I mean they freaking float wtf?

Well the thing about the Dark Spawn is, as they've said many times in the games, that they're suppose to be the "dark reflections of men's evil" or something like that. When I look at their new design, they don't really seem to capture that. Imo it worked in Origins because they actually look like monsters.  I don't think Dark Spawn really need to look the "same" because then they kind of feel generic. I never really got a sense of danger from them when they showed up from DA 2 and on. When they showed up at Ostagar for ex, it's like you could put yourself in Calian's army's shoes as to why they'd be scared seeing those things come marching up

I just disagree on that. I dont think the dark spawn armor in Origins looked ornated, it had a certain style yes, but that style was suited perfectly in my opinon. The armor made them look "hordish" and dangerous, you know in terms of being organised militarywise while maintaining a certain wildness. It brought a mean of identification to the dark spawn as a whole. As a wave that intends to go down over the surface of the world. It does certainly not look comical in Origins but in II and in Inquisition IT DOES. Now they look like weird culitsts covered in metal plates who perform weird undead rituals in some caves of which they occasionally pop out.

I mean are you kidding me ?:  https://lh5.googleus...2_darkspawn.jpg

They don't look comical?? They might as well appear in WoW for crying out loud! Can you honestly look at those pictures and be totally serious about them being the "horde" that now and then threatens to overrun the entire world? I can't sorry!

But Darkspawn are NOT diseased versions of the other races. Ghouls are infected people it's true, but the Darkspawn themselves are an entirely separate species.

Err... No ?

Darkspawn are actually exactly that : a diseased, twisted version of their original species.
