Harpies in Dragon Age Lore

This got me thinking....do harpies exist in the Dragon Age universe? Any references?
Personally, I love them.....and since Desire Demons are a no show (sad face), maybe harpies would be a cool female monster they could add for variety? :-)

i don't think i've seen any mention of harpies or female/bird creatures in DA codex's. but there is much still unknown about Par Vollen, or the norther land that the Qunari/Kossith originate.

Not a huge fan of "female" monsters, at least not when the female-ness is a factor in the monstrosity of a thing. Like with Broodmothers.
But that's the person who sat through Freud-heavy horror film classes talking. I have bias.

Though I can't speak for Harpies, I can say this on Desire Demons: Dorian encountered a male form early on in his experience in the Fade.
Not that they appear in game, but I'm sure some people will be glad to know they exist in a male form.

For me I personally think female monsters are very underrepresented, so a female addition would be great imo.
Pity about harpies not existing in DA lore (so far), they would be kick ass!
I wonder what those female looking bird things are in the paintings though?

Yes.
I'd be surprised if they actually ever showed it, even though I wish they would. It seems like it would be an investment of time and money for little gain.

Could you consider Morrigan a harpy?
I think if they appear pretty, and then turn out vicious, they're Sirens. ![]()
(Siren's were bird-creatures, too, not mermaid things

They could have made the Desire Demons be the Demon's equivalent of the Red Templar Knight buffing its fellow Demons with barriers and giving speed buffs and such.

I didn't know sirens were bird like too? Always thought they were like mermaids...speaking of which....do either of those exist in DA lore? XD I want some female monsterssss!

That's the common modern assumption, since they're associated with leading sailors to their doom.
Give me a moment and I'll find a source.

Well, here's the link to their wiki page, not that anyone really needed help with that. It talks about their wingedness and the heavy association with birds.

They're like Harpies with high charisma.

Hah very cool, thanks for sharing. Learn something new every day! :-) I've been thinking wrong about them for years, lol

This is a Fereldan tapestry on the life of Andraste.I wonder what those female looking bird things are in the paintings though?

I'm assuming that's the Black City, as the next one is the Maker appearing to Andraste(with 80's hair.)

Haha very cool, thanks for finding the image I was referring to. Omg harpies in the Black City! I want that to happen! :-D
You really like harpies...Have you heard about Furies/Erinyes?

These ones are like Harpies if you took them off their medication...Usually with bat wings instead of feathery ones.

It makes sense though that Dorian would've encountered a Desire Demon in a male form, given who he is. For some reason my brain didn't register that fact until now. It just went "Male desire demon appeared to Dorian... cool" without even realizing that it appeared in front of Dorian.
Yup, sometimes my brain just acts way too dopey.

Haha that I do. Harpies and succubi (Desire Demon types) have always been interesting to me and somewhat more insidious than than the usual smash everything in sight ogre type of monster. Like I said...I think female creatures are underrepresented lol.
Thanks for the link, interesting reading! Appreciated :-)

Which is why I doubt any possible implementation for them in game.
At this point, it seems like there would have to be a specific reason for a desire demon to appear to someone as male. It doesn't seem feasible for Bioware to try to figure out the orientation of every PC, and then of course there's the possibility of the PC not having a gender preference because of bisexuality or asexuality or what have you.
Although I suppose we could get one who's trying to appeal to an NPC...but I don't see Bioware going to all that trouble to make a new enemy appearance for that.
Not that you were bringing up any of this...I'm just speculating.

Out of curiosity, do you think they're underrepresented in Dragon Age specifically, or in media in general?

I was meaning Dragon Age specifically in this case. We only had one obviously female monster/creature (desire demons), who were then removed from the game. I miss them, and hope they get reimplemented, but short of that I thought a harpy type monster would be a good substitute :-)

No it's fine! I happen to agree with you, as it would end up presuming the PC's sexuality. Unless they made it dependent on who you've been flirting with or are in a romance with, it probably wouldn't work. Probably be too much hassle in the end. Lot of resources. Maybe just have a Desire Demon say "I enjoy this form. It pleases me." so to speak -- that is, the Demon picks a form it's comfortable with, not necessarily a form the PC would be comfortable with.
And from there, we say "Me likey" or not.

The Despair Demon might also count, as it kinda takes on a feminine appearance -- that of an old crone.
A monstrous old crone, but an old crone nonetheless.
