I just got to the first settlement & there is nothing to buy.
If the only way to get stuff is by crafting it, then I won't bother playing any further.

You do get weapons and armor as loot, but in general crafted stuff is better.

No, crafting is not essential. It is better to craft though as you can easily craft weapons and armor that are better than loot drops.

It's not 'essential', but bought/dropped items are more or less gimped by design. It's rare that you'll find something that's better than what you already have, and if you do, it's going to be level restricted.

Plus, the economy is absolutely screwed in DAI and nothing makes any sense whatsoever.

Mainly used it with the schematic perk so you can beef up the coolest looking drops.

Crafting is not essential, especially on the lower difficulties. There is plenty of gear available for your Inquisitor, all of your buddies, with leftovers to sell for cash. That said, this does depend on you looting. Some players don't like to loot, and if you don't loot you won't get gear drops. On the other hand, crafting gear requires that you loot ore, leather, and cloth instead.

Crafting is good if you want a more custom appearance or specific stats for the build you are going for. With DAI specifically, because they removed the stat point allocation we had with DAO and DA2, you rely on your gear to customize and augment your class build. But again, this isn't truly necessary in the lower difficulties.

It depends on what you are going for also. I've found an unfortunate dearth of 1h swords and I greatly prefer that my SnS warriors use swords, so I crafted some.

As others have said its not mandatory to craft items for I didn't craft anything aside from a staff when I first got to Skyhold on playing on normal difficulty, but you won't have the most up-to-date gear either from how loot works in the game being completely random and overpriced at a vendor.

I like the crafting setup, but since crafted things are almost always better you probably should quit playing if crafting is somehow bad. Always having to craft for the best play seems important on my level

Crafted items are better than what you find 80% of the time. However, there are excellent items out there if you happen to find them at the right time because you incidentally travelled somewhere at the exact right character level.

No, but crafted stuff is usually better if you do it semi-well. Also, with customizing the crafted stuff with different grips, greaves, runes and such, you can really give your characters just the thing they want.

Personally, I love weapons that heal my for when I kill enemies, something that's rare with looted stuff. Stat-boosts can be crazy with some crafting too, not to mention certain fade-touched stuff is just amazing...also, fun to run around with an armour YOU have made. :)

It makes specific character builds or playstyles easier, but overall it's not vital.

I couldn't help but lol. What kind of players are these and why, for heaven's sake, do they play RPGs?

I used it mostly to fill gaps. Modifications more than weapons or armor.

And how will a player who doesn't like looting obtain schematics for crafting? Most of them are either loot drops or bought from stores... with money you looted.

Not essential, but very helpful.

The shops can carry some items that may be better than those seen elsewhere, though that is unusual. My Dwarven Rogue purchased a helm that was almost twice as armored as anything found or made at that time.

Loot, treasure, and drops can yield some items of great worth, but generally Crafted gear is better at that same level. However, a longbow found in the early game carried my first Inq all the way to the final Act before being replaced by a Crafted weapon.

Crafting makes the game easier.  The game doesn't really need to be easier, and if you do want it easier you can change the difficulty, so feel free to skip crafting

Actually, this was a major hurdle for me initially, as I loathe Alchemy, and picking flowers with my Dwarf seemed rather out of character. However, I asked myself if doing something this simple would aid others and the Inquisition would make it more in line with the character motivation, and I dood it. Still dislike it, but it is a great way to get banter to fire.

No BUT, if you like playing normal or casual and, want a bit more realism of starting form a rag tag few, you can play it as all looted items must be sold and, you can oly have what you can craft. You only have it if you can get the resources to have it. Money can only be used to purchase schematics. You may also use accessories since you cannot craft those but you must craft all weapons and armor you and your companions wear.

Yes that means Varric does not get to keep Bianca, you must sell it to buy schematics. Cole does not get to keep his hat, you need to buy patterns for weapons and armor moer than he needs a hat. Viv has to put up with rag tag low end, shabby looking gear to begin with. Sorry girl but, it's all we can afford for now.

I got through a big chunk of my first playthrough without crafting, I'm not super into making my own stuff so in this game and others I usually just sell off everything you need to make stuff on your own and focus on loot drops.

Towards the middle-end of the game, though, I found that crafting was the way to go. I got much better stats out of my armor and weapons, and at that point it was a significant difference and something I felt was worth my time. Sadly I didn't have much to work with since I'd sold a lot of my materials previously, so now on my second run, I've kept everything and do more crafting than I normally would. If you're on the fence, I'd say keep your crafting materials till about the middle of the game, and you'll find you'll be using it a lot more then.

I wander around picking plants and chalking the rocks for the mine crews. As far as that is RP, this is not actually farming but alchemy, only a fool would favor bravado over potions in a mage war, imo

I am getting used to the schematics, was so mysterious but now it is something I can evaluate on the fly, 19 metal vs 21, easy peasy, and what is that a cloth UTL slot, wtf, but hey we need to kill some great bears for the rogue's leather, then be killing villains for wizard wear.

i like to farm
