When are they going to patch this game again?  I'm so fed up with how stupid the AI is, they don't follow orders, they don't fight, they don't defend.  During a dragon fight, my entire party (except for whom I was controlling) just stood in front of the damn dragon, for cleaves and everything, they stand in fire etc...  I tell them to do something and they screw it up, constantly.  Why does my tank just stand there for 75% of the fights, not even in the area of current combat?  Why?  That makes no sense, strategically, or for a human for that matter.  It's not just for dragon fights, It's for almost every fight.

I can watch Sera, just standing there, looking at someones foot while she's getting punched in the face (regardless if she deserves it or not, because she is the most annoying person on the planet).  But why is my group not doing a damn thing, or doing it so poorly?

I set all the rotations and pots and everything, only to see them stand in the worst possible places at the worst possible times.  I would get so pissed, I would end up playing that toon instead, only to have the toon I just switched over from, start acting like a moron too.

The dragon is quite a few levels lower than me too, so it's not like I'm too under geared for the fight.  I don't tell them to hold position.  Is there maybe a "actually fight and not stand there and die like a moron" button that I perhaps pushed accidentally?

Ya the AI is either dumb or fatally stupid its one of the reasons i have not played the game a second time as much as i like the story there is a much better game lurking below the surface we gets glimpses of and i am tired of waiting for it to emerge. Can't keep archers and mages out of melee range i seriously think i have used more potions because of AI stupidity than because i personally ordered my party to do something dumb...the latter i would happily accept.

Ok what are your AI set to? Many topics in this forum suggest

Behaviours:

Follow <Self>

ex:

Casandra Follow Casandra

Sera Follow Sera

Solas Follow Solas

This will make them more idependant. More like Aggressive, Target nearest enemy. behaviour from DA:O

Others like the following settings:

Casandra Follows Casandra

Sera Follows Casandra

Solas Follows Casandra

I don't like it because I change party memebers often enough so that would be a pain to change over and over. If you want to use Blackwall or Iron Bull as a tank, you would have to change all the tactics. Perhaps I will use it on Nightmare difficulty if I ever play it.

Tactics:

Leave most abilities on enabled, and survivabilitiy options on preferred. I usually have 1 or 2 extra depending on role.

ex.

Sera:

  • Preferred: Evade, Long Shot
  • Disabled: Focus Ablity
  • Enabled: Everything else

Casandra:

  • Preferred: Shield Wall, Body Guard, Challenge, Warcry
  • Disabled: Focus Ablity
  • Enabled: Everything else

Vivienne:

  •     Preferred: Fade Cloak, Spirit Blade, Barrier
  •     Disabled: Focus Ablity
  •     Enabled: Everything else

Barrier is Preferred on my mages. But some ppl prefer to use it themselves to that it covers more party members and used at the correct times. But this playthrough I play as a mage so most of my barriers I control regardless of their settings.

Oh and one last small tiny thing. Sera is awsome!!! Best battlecries, best no-bullshit personality. Vivienne however has got to be the worst personality I have encountered in this game so far. I really wish she was one of the enemy generals, working to imprison all mages, chain and bound like the Qunari Saarebas. All so she can keep her high social status. Biggest ego-maniac ever....although she is too bad to look at.

I just had this thought today, trying the fire up the trebuchets (I won't go into detail about the situation, cause of spoilers). Party members even tell me to do so, and yet.... they just stand there like idiots. Umm... I'm firing the trebuchet up, can you at least keep the damn baddies off of me?

I had the exact same issue with my mage during that mission. I had two archers and an abom picking my mage off and my companions were just standing around. I ended up taking over Cassi and tanking everything. At least then my mage wasn't getting heat from every damn mob.

Also, has anyone else noticed that the mobs always make a b line for the inquisitor unless someone or something attacks the mob first? Yeah, he's standing up the back! Go get him! Ignore those other three guys.

Try guard cassandra/blackwall for cole. He wont attack unless something attacks your tank. It makes him less aggressive but he frequently picks good targets this way.

Only posting to second what Flaxwing said about Vivienne's personality. She's like a lawful evil type or something and has hate for pretty much everyone. Take Solas instead, he's basically a good person.

Ai is a god damn joke. Especialy when fighting dragons. Your party stands under a giant dragons hitbox pacing back and forth doing NOTHING... so much fail. I doubt this will ever get fixed either. A very important part of the game ruined for me. It's like they just threw a dragon and some people in a room together, then shut the door and called it good...

problem is a dragon has multiple hitboxes, If ai locks on to its legs it tries getting to it but cant. Would have helped if dragon just had one hitbox but sadly they dont and we get the AI melee shuffle.

Have had fair luck with this Behavior:

* Cassandra Follows Controlled
* Ranged Follows Cassandra

However, this may not be the best for Dragon battles. Hitting the united target 'Y' on selected areas seems to help there.

For dragons I don't rely on the AI as much, I simply enter tactics mode and have them all Auto-attack the same leg of the dragon.

I go back legs first, then front. For no real reason other that you seem to be hit alot more by the front legs while they stands on their hind-legs.

One leg at a time until the dragon flinches and starts to bleed.

It see to disable AoE attacks by that particular limb, and leaves the dragon vulnerable for a small moment.

I also prefer to bring all melee and 1 mage. So that when attacking the same leg, all party members can be covered by a single barrier.

If you bring ranged allies, tell them to move close to the dragon during the Windy Wendy's Flap Storm, or else  they will use up half your potion supply each time that happens.

Or you can just use one 10 of the cheesier strategies posted on this forum, if you like that sort of gameplay.
