Varric seriously ? hes been in 2 games already, and had no real reason to be in inquision other than fan pandering, oh im already here kidnaped might as well help save the world, the varric from DA2 looked to me like an oportunist regardless of having a golden heart to his friends, he should had been an advisor or contact for lyrium and supllies, he is merchant after all.

As actual returning companions?

- Probably Dorian. I used to be suspicious of him because the only thing I new pre-game was his mustache. Now we're bros. Moving on.

NOT VARRIC. Seriously, stop appearing in ALL of the cutscenes of EVERYONE. I let Hawke die just to make you sad...and because Loghain is better than Hawke, but the POINT is I don't like your presence in Inquisition.

- Scout Harding as an Inquisition representative, perhaps? Given the Inquisition's newfound importance to EVERYONE. It's be another dwarf rogue (Bow user from the cutscenes.) but still, it's Harding!

- Dog, relative of Barkspawn.

- ...Morrigan?

- Sir Chancer de Lion? "It is good to be Champion!"

- Justice. I want to see Justice return. Given it's experiences in the first two games, I like to think Justice has formed a strong enough sense of 'self' to return and still remember things from the past two games. Every game needs a Spirit companion, right?

Varric, which I would like. He's always a solid wingman. Plus his story hasn't been really told. If hawke is to be any part of the future, than surely Varric will be there.

Dorian has a chance too, depends if the game goes north to Tevinter and doesn't explore the story of the calling/HOF and the crisis with the Grey wardens in the Anderfels right now with the civil war and all.

Depends on how heavily the Inquisition will feature in the scheme of things. At the end, certain characters say that they are staying, and others say they are going home. Varric says he is going back to Kirkwall to write and to help rebuild the City. In my game, Cassandra is Divine, Vivienne looks like she will be Grand Enchanter. Iron Bull is going home, with the Chargers, Sera says she will stay. Cole is also staying. Even if the game does not focus on the Inquisition, it could send a couple of members along to deal with any Tevinter threat. I would say that Dorian is a cert, in some capacity. If there is a side plot concerning the Wardens, tied into the recent book, Last Flight, then Blackwall could actually go through the joining with them.

I'd say that Dorian would be the only certainty to return as an ally, Solas will obviously be involved as well. The next game needs to look at Tevinter, what they are up to and their relationship with the rest of the world, which ties into, pretty much, everything. the blight, the Elves, Orlais, The Chantry. So I would expect that we will see whoever our Divine is, Iron Bull, with the Qunari, Dorian, Solas and possibly an old character like Fenris.

Cole is the most likely. Possibly Varric.

Dorian would be fitting for the next game, but I think it's unlikely since they never bring back LI's. I'm sure he'll make a cameo though.

I expected to see Dorian return as companion or prominent NPC, if the next game is set in Tevinter Imperium. As much as I love Varric, tbh I think his role as a companion is enough. He's been in two games already, and there's not much left to learn about him. Let him rest go home to Kirkwall, as he wished already.

That said, I support Scout Harding as a companion, and full romance in DA4.

@Broganisity

Exactly what I was thinking for Harding! And make her a bi romance, unless they also want to include a male dwarf LI too.

I think it would be cool to have Evangeline as a platonic party member. And since we apparently need a Grey Warden (or Grey Warden pretender) in every game, we could have that chick from the Last Flight Book. I admit I never read it so I don't know her name or how it ends.

As far as returning characters for companions go

If we head north like it seems we will, then it wouldn't be out of place to see Dorian or Fenris return. As annoying as his brooding could sometimes be in DA2, I would find it interesting to see Anders/Justice come back with a more controlled personality. I think Scout Harding is a definite possibility too. Solas and Morrigan will probably play significant roles in the game but not be protagonists. If I had to guess, Varric will come back as an NPC to bust the protagonist out of some trouble (classic Varric ;) ) I'd love to see Carver again, but it might be too much to hope for him or Bethany as a companion.

If I had to choose one companion from each game to come back as a companion in DA4, I would choose Morrigan, Anders, and Dorian.

The next game surely has to be heading North. Apart from Orlais, there is no nation that is mentioned as much as Tevinter and their effect on the world has touched everyone, pretty much. Unless there is a long term plan for a set number of games and the finale is going to be there, then it has to be time for the game to, at least, visit there.

Calpernia. I mean you never "see" her die if you do choose to kill her, and I'm not aware of Leliana saying they found/looked for a body. Plus she seems pretty hellbent on changing Tevinter which many assume will be at the center of the next game.

Anderfels or Tevinter, is my best guess. But I never really thought about Calpernia as a future companion.. it actually sounds quite interesting, and now I'm hoping she will be.

But if they are going to do Tevinter, surely they must do Par Vollen and Seheron with it... which seems pretty ambitious. If we go up north to Tevinter, and the Qunari-Tevinter war isn't a significant piece of the story, I'll be quite disappointed.

I've come back to take this moment to say that we can fill our need for a Mabari and a Grey Warden companion all in one. Thanks, Last Flight!

To me the most likely ones are Dorian and Iron Bull from DAI.Possibly Sera, since she seems to have an interest in the qunari, but seems a bit far fetched as an actual reason. Varric, because Varric, is always an option. I think the ones involved with the chantry will stay behind, however I would actually like to see either Josephine or Cullen continue on as well. :)

Out of the other games, I think Isabela, Fenris and...yes... Hawke! Is the most likely. With 1 game removed since we played her/him, Hawke as a companion would almost be interesting, since Hawke is shaped pretty specifically by the events in DAI, and isn't necessarily as tied to -us- as before. I think it would actually be pretty cool.

And yes this is me assuming that we're going north.

I think the trouble with Hawke being a full blown companion is Hawke can be a he/she; rogue, warrior or mage, and finally aggressive, diplomatic, or sarcastic personalty. There are a crap ton of variables to consider to make Hawke a full blown companion. Turning Hawke into one character would be pretty lame. I'd rather have a unique Hawke for one mission, than a "shaped" Hawke that isn't any different despite how they acted in the personal story that was DA:2

Hawke does have a pretty consistent characterization, though, as well as a canon backstory. Class would be easy to implement, and they seemed to work around the personality issue in DA: I well enough.

And given that we have Hawke's actions and general personality recorded via the Keep, it wouldn't be TOO hard to implement them. Have them mostly mention events from Inquisition and the key story events of DA:2, give them their base class (and possibly allow the selection of their 'specialization' at the time of recruitment), and some varying attitudes to/takes on lines based on their personality but not all too varying given that, lets face it, all Hawkes were generally the same in DA:I.

The problem is whether or not Hawke's Plot Armor was activated when we all left him/her behind in The Fade. ;)

Hawke's coming back Jumanji style bro. He's going to be seeing demons everywhere when he comes back to Thedas.

Dorian or Cole.

I don't see why Dorian's LI status bars him from being a future companion. It hasn't been done before, but that doesn't mean it will never be done in the future. Even in a romance, he's pretty clear about wanting to return to Tevinter. And it's not like the devs are opposed to separating the hero and their LI for story's sake.

Cole would be invested in helping people who need it the most, which gives him motive for hanging out wherever there's a crisis that requires patching up, but his personal quest provides two widely differing paths. Dorian is actually a more probable candidate, considering that he doesn't have the potential to undergo huge personality changes. I'd bet that Cole and IB would more likely show up as cameos than companions.
