i have found a dozen blue and 4 purple staffs so far - and ALL have been fire or frost (thx god my mage is using lightning)....is that the rng hating me or do lightning mages not get any love?

There is Magisters Lightning Staff, however its a little bit more RNG dependant from Chests (Farmed @ Hinterlands Dragon Cove/Stash) Aswell as a Purple Staff at the Merchant in the Crossroads (Hinterlands) when you have the short list perk. Otherwise i think the staff in Still Ruins in the Western Approach is also Lightning( might be wrong)

The tempest in the Still Ruins is a frost staff but otherwise you are correct. The best lightning unique staff i was able to find drops from a level 20 something dragon at Emprise du Lion. Can't remember the name though.

he was talking about purple items so I assumed he meant the uniques in the game. Other than that you are of course correct the crafted items are worlds above any unique item in the game (perhaps except Longbow of the Griffon).

Staff of the Void is unique lightning staff. It drops from one of the Emprise dragons.
