I can craft one of two different staff upgrades, a +8% Attack upgrade, or a +6 Will/+6 Magic upgrade.

Which one will give me more raw damage? (not counting barriers, etc)

(This is now that I have been informed that pursuing Attack % is better than going after Crit %.)

In general, how do I compare Attack % to Magic/Will?

Also, looking at this staff I made, it has:

136 DPS/Item level 19

64 Fire Damage

+20 Damage vs Living

+17% Attack

+21 Magic

+21 Willpower

with a Brutal Superb Grip, Resolute Imbued Head, and a Corrupting Rune (It is also a Masterwork, I got lucky)

I am confused as to how all those numbers relate? how does the 64/+20/+17%/+21/+21 wind up adding up to 136 DPS?

Also does, the +17% add 10.88 damage (against the base 64) or 14.45 (17% of 64 + (21+21)*.5)? In other words, does the 17 percent boot damage AFTER Will/Magic are factored in or BEFORE? (This may also help answer my first question above about the value of Attack % vs Magic/Will.)

Thanks.

In terms of raw damage, ignoring the bonuses to barrier damage/magic defence, each point of magic and willpower simply gives you 0.5% attack

OH! I thought each point of Will/Magic gave .5 damage points, not .5% Attack. If it's the latter, that simplifies things enormously.

Thanks.

Edit: so then it would be obvious that a +8% Attack upgrade does more raw damage than a +6Will/+6Magic upgrade - 2% more.

If you really wanna min/max, then you also have to calculate how much total attack % and WP/M you already have. Just to demonstrate with a hyperbole, if you have 1000 total wp/M and 0 attack %, then 8% attack is a no-contest upgrade of 8% more DPS. Whereas, on the other hand, adding 12 to 1000 adds next to nothing (0.3% according to my math, could be wrong, but it´s definitely low).

Attack% is always going to yield more than an equivalent amount of slot wp/magic or crit.the best staff in the game is the seer staff because you can get attack, attack, crit chance.

Also there is no reason to take magic over wp unless barrier damage is really more useful than magic defense for your build.

You should really ignore dps, it means nothing.

You can use this calculator to compare damage output.
