First things first,  I looked through all recent threads to see if anyone else is having the issues I'm experiencing, I haven't found any (installation issues, other then the thread pertaining to the DVD/CD versions of the game).

My problem is with the DirectDrive Digital Deluxe Edition and installation, upon reaching 100%, with no problems during, I get "Mass Effect Failed to Install - A data error occurred"

Normally I would think this would be a bad download, so I attempted to redownload, first through Gamespy Comrade, then the normal D2D Download Manager and then finally, through Google Chrome's DLM.

Each time I get the same issue, upon checking the install logs I find it is due to "dialog.rar" here is the error as reported in the installation log:

(edit - Sorry for the jumbled mess, this sites conversion from the clipboard is retarded.)

I am now attempting to download on another computer to see if it's specific to the one I'm currently using, however these downloads each take about 2 hours(for me at least) so I was hoping I might find a solution before then. I really doubt each download was corrupted or missing data and this is the first time I've ever had an issue with D2D.

Finally, yes I named my computer Kitteh.

I've got this error too, but on the retail Collectors Edition disk. It happens on disk 2 each time.

Workarounds are available for the DVD/CD versions of the game. However as this is an encrypted version from Direct2Drive I can't attempt the same steps.

After sitting through a 4th complete download (40gigs total about) on 2 machines I narrowed down my problem.

It seems when I had initiated the "pre-load" from D2D it created bad data in the form of Mass Effect 2 Installer in the AppData directory, in Vista this is a hidden folder in your User directory. When the game installed fine on the other computer I checked the registry on the first to see if any Mass Effect 2 data was embedded there.

Sure enough I found the "dummy" information, and on deleting it from the registry, it allowed me to install the game without issue on the primary computer.

If you find yourself in the same situation I was in (DIGITAL DOWNLOAD VERSION ONLY) check your registry and see if any corrupt ME2 data is there. On installation errors it should erase all ME2 data, however some evil bits can linger about complicating things later on down the line.

Note - Only edit your registry if you know what the hell you are doing, if not I suggest using CC cleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/

Hey thanks for the digging. I'm getting the same data error but ccleaner didn't fix the problem. Would you be able to walk me through finding this dummy info so I can delete it please. Thanks

What entries did you delete from the registry? Everything I see in the registry under Electronic Arts for mass effect 2 (I downloaded from EA) seems innocuous to me.

I think I will download from Steam next time. Nicer downloader.

ok, I have a question. My boyfriend finally was able to download ME2, and can run it, though it took lots of tries from Steam. Just can't save, so he might as well not be able to load. Fresh virgin HD, and win7. any one else have this issue once able to download? I bought a hard copy, never an issue for me, but he hasn't ever made it to the helping the crew stage.

I was able to install ME2 by downloading multiple versions of the installer from EA and replacing the corrupt files withing the RAR files. It was tedious, but testing the archives using winrar saved a lot of time by allowing me to replace files up front.

I also have this issue with the gamersgate version of ME2, I will try the fix thank you, and report if it works later.

-edit
There were no registry entries for mass effect 2 at all, and cc cleaner didn't solve it. I will try another download, and see what happens, or if I can't unzip some of the files manually. I'll post what happens in a day or two.

I've redownloaded the whole thing taking another day or two worth of time, and I'm getting the same error. I noticed it's on a different file now though (but in the same rar I believe, movies.rar) :/.

Any ideas anyone? What registry entries should I be searching for? Though I doubt they are to blame, what else could be causing it?

I will now try redownloading everything yet again, and hopefully i'll find a working copy of the rar files I need or if not the files within the rar files, and fix it up manually. Trying to open the rar files manually I found the data was indeed corrupt, it is the first time I have seen this with any downloaded game.

I'm quite annoyed it is taking so much work, unless anyone has a better option? I feel a bit let down by bioware on this product as a whole, especially with the problems i'm having with ME 1 as well, but lets see what happens. I'll post again in a day or two, unless anyone can point me to the registry entries (even the ones on your working copies would be helpful).

ME 2 is installed :D

Rars are a great file type, but really poor for transferring digital games, they corrupt so easily.

I also found out I love the gamersgate downloader, as if you copy in the healthy files you can skip ahead to the ones you need, provided you retain the installers alphabetical order, and don't get ahead of what it is downloading next.

If you come across this corruption error, and people will here, this is how you can beat the buggy installer. I don't know if this works for other digital distributers, but it worked for me and gamersgate.

1, Download the game at least twice, if you are unlucky, three or four times.

2, Open up your corrupted rar file in winrar, and see specifically which files are corrupted. (Copy them to the clipboard), it’s best to test all your rar files at this point. (A pain I know but better safe than sorry)

3, Extract all the file contents of the corrupted rar.

4, Replace the specific corrupted files in one install with fresh files from your non corrupted download, hopefully this will only take you 2 downloads to get at least 1 clean copy of each file.

5, Zip up the rar, but do not copy it to the directory you are picking to install from yet, as it will show as smaller than the standard rar and in gamersgates case at least, lead to the file being redownloaded again.

6, Run the gamersgate installer again, when you get to the setup stage before selecting, express or custom, then copy your now clean rar file to the direction.

7, Start installing. The installer will go ahead, even though the file is smaller than it should be. It’s critical that you wait till after point 6 to copy the clean rar, as the gamersgate downloader installer will think it is an incomplete file, where as the ME2 installer doesn't check for file size.

I am testing the game now, and so I will report if there are any bugs later down the line, but I hope there isn't!

Now I only have my ME 1 bugs to fix, I hope.

I know this thread has been dead for a bit. I just wanted to add my experience in the hopes that it may help someone else. I had to reinstall windows, and thus mass effect 2. I was unable to re-install from my discs. "Data Error" at random points. This also occurred with the complimentary digital download from the EA server.

Long story short, my overclock that passed 24hrs Prime 95, 12hrs OCCT and 1.5hrs linpack was the culprit. I reset my processor to stock specifications and the install went on without any issues.

Just my experience. Hope it helps
