Just wondering, in DA:I the Inquisitor's surname is said to be Lavellan, and it's also the Clan's name. Is Lavellan his/her true surname? Or Dalish elves adopt Clan Name as Surname?

In DA:O a Dalish Warden has distinct surname (Mahariel) & Clan Name (Sabrae). He/she is the only Dalish that I can remember having a distinct surname however...Why is this? No one else in the clan has distinct surname no?

Many people suspect that the dalish use the clan name as their surnames

Mahariel has a different surname because it belongs to her mother who was from a different clan

Ooh? But he/she is the child of Sabrae Keeper before Marethari, and brought up within the Sabrae clan. Does this means the Dalish are Matriarch?

I doubt so?

As far as we know it's just that their clan quarreled and Mama Mahariel left her clan and joined Daddy Keeper Sabrae. I guess they kept her name to honour the woman

I don't know if they have officially said one way or another. My thought would be that your surname denotes your birth clan. We know that Dalish elves will move around younger members of their groups to improve genetic diversity and also make sure that each clans had a tolerable amount of mages. [Although, as referenced in DA:I, this doesn't always work.]

Using that, then Lavellan would have been born and raised in his/her clan. Mahariel would have been a transfer.

I searched to see what would come up, and this was said on reddit as far as Mahariel went: "The patriarch of the Mahariel family was the former Keeper of the Sabrae clan prior to Marethari."

Mahariel isn't a transfer

Her parents were ambushed by elven and human bandits. The Keeper died defending his wife and she soon after giving birth to the kid just disappeared "in the moonlight" or sth

Wasn't the Lavellan keeper also such a case? Deshanna Istimaethoriel?

Maybe she was a transfer, Mahariel got the name from her mum's clan... That's the only explanation that would make sense.

I think inheriting surnames from the mother would make a society matrilineal not matriarchal. But I assume if that was the case for the Dalish it would have been mentioned at some point.

It's also possible if the parents weren't married (bonded?) when the child was born it inherits the mother's name.

I always just assumed that Dalish don't have surnames, but since human society is very formal and insists on a formal way of addressing the Herald-turned-Inquisitor, they call you by your clan name because it seems as good as any.

It may also be that individual names are only used within the clan, not to outsiders.   So the only thing the Inquisitor would divulge to them is that she/he is from clan Lavellan or when they ask their name, they simply respond "Lavellan".

That would certainly explain why most Dalish, like Merrill, are only addressed as having a first name.

True, but Marethari refers to the Dalish Warden as Mahariel in Dragon Age 2.

True, but Marethari refers to the Dalish Warden as Mahariel in Dragon Age 2.

Since the first name changes based on who plays the game, they had to come up with something generally referenceable, even if it's a bit wonky.
