Hey guys, yesterday I continued the "Here Lies the Abyss" quest, leading me to the fade and eventually coming up with the Aspect of the Nightmare boss

However, after 40+ tries I can't figure a good strategy to beat him, since he keeps spawning those little spiders.

I'm playing on hard, as a lvl 14 rogue, with Cassandra, Dorian and Iron Bull.

If anyone could help me, keeping in mind that i can't load earlier saves since I overwrote them, I would greatly appreciate.

You would need to provide more information. Such as: Dagger or Bow Rogue? Skills? What spells does Dorian has? I imagine Cassandra is a Tank and Iron Bull a Reaver?

You could always load the Milestone, even if you can't load your own saves from prior.

What consumables do you have (grenades/tonics/etc.)? Would also be valuable before we can help.

Well, I'm a double dagger rogue, and I don't use any tonics or grenades, just the healing and health restoration potion.

I also have all the double dagger skills and some stealth skills such as Stealth, Easy to Miss, Evasion and Evade.

Dorian is a fire mage, but I`m currently using a lightning staff since the Nightmare has a weak spot on that. He has the barrier ability, Fire Mine, Immolate and some Necromancer skills that aren't useful at all for this boss.

Cassandra is a weapon and shield with all her abilities on this skill tree upgraded, I also have some Vanguard skills and I look forward to get the Spell Purge, which would really help a lot.

Iron Bull is indeed a Reaver, and he uses a two-handed Hayder's Razor. The only problem with him is that usually he is the first to die, since I start the battle with only 4 potions..

Thank you so much, if you guys need anything else just ask.

I can think of two options:

A) The hard way (also more rewarding): have cassandra stay on nightmare, then focus fire on the spiders one by one, kill them fast and then bring dps back to boss. Keep in mind that the boss dumps targeting when it teleports, so make sure to re-target after that.

B) Cheesing it: use Mark of the Rift, with a bit of luck it will insta-kill the boss.

Other than that, if you're open to loading a previous save and switching some of your party, get solar with Pull of the Abyss, or any mage with upgraded Static Cage, it will help with AoE crowd control, and switch iron bull for an archer or mage.

PS: If you're playing on normal, you can just have everyone attacking the boss, and only your rogue running around killing spiders. If you're on Hard or Nightmare then I do recommend all damage dealers on spiders.

4 Potions all around? or do you have some Restoration potions still? Restoration potions pre-emptively used on Bull will reduce the strain by quite a bit, also manually controlling him.

If he has upgraded Earthshaking Strike from the 2H tree Bull + Dorian should be able to handle spiders while you + Cass focus boss.

There should be a Resupply in the tunnel to the boss iirc.

Other than that, and above advice, I would say you need to go back and re-prepare.

If you have the abilities, I would cheese it with Iron Bull. Take control of him yourself, then spam Ring of Pain, Dragon Rage and Devour. Have Dorian keep casting Barrier as often as possible.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

Btw, I am playing on Hard and I have no Restoration potions left and only 4 healing potions. The boss itself is quite easy, the spiders are the problem, since after the first barrier drop ( from the Nightmare ) they keep respawning after 15 seconds or so.

I'll try all of your suggestions and let you guys know how it goes.

Ps: Should I give my party orders through the tactical view?

I did this as a DW Rogue on Nightmare. The best strategy I've found is to just keep your party grouped together. Spiders spawn from every corner of the room so the only way to keep your Mages/Rogues safe is to keep them near the tank; which also allows you to hit everyone with barrier when it's off CD.

Another benefit of keeping everyone close together is that it's easier to resuscitate party members who fall. Make sure your tank keeps the Nightmare taunted but only attack the Nightmare when there aren't any adds; always kill the adds first. Adds will eventually stop then start up again as you do a certain amount of damage to the Nightmare.

I'd say tactical view is very important for this one.

I prefer to take Solas, ice does wonders for controling those spiders. I run a mage myself, KE, so I can keep the barrier on myself and my warrior (any will do) and slash away beside him. Let Solas and either Varric or Cole deal with the spiders unless they get too close to me and my warrior.

play your tank, group your party together, war cry when necessary, block with shield wall all the time while party clears the mob, hit the boss, repeat.

How is this even possible, considering there is a resupply crate right before the Aspect of Nightmare fight.

I got the ressuply and tried to do the Black Window quest, resulting in the loss of 4 potions..

Another tip from somebody who will rather reload an entire quest than bump down the difficulty, bring 4 respec potions with you before a hard main quest. That way if you find yourself with unhelpful skills you can just get some more crowd control or whatever you need before the boss fight.

Personally I'd go with 2 tanks, 1 for the boss, 1 for the whelps.

Caladin is right on the mark. I ended up doing that on my mage run, primarily to avoid line-of-sight issues since casters will have trouble casting on top of the square platform if they are not on top of it. Had one part member on each corner of the square, it's close enough to cast barrier on all of them, and no LoS problems.

I'm trying this strategy and it's working quite well, however, I can't keep my party in the square, because if I tell them to hold their positions they'll stand still without hitting the spiders, and if I tell them to attack my target they break formation :/

Is there anything I can do to keep them inside a specific are while engaging at enemies? Keep in mind that I'm playing on Xbox..

Don't attack the spiders until they are on top the platform. Once they are on the platform, order them to attack, they will break formation but mostly stay on the platform. Once the spiders are dead, reposition your crew, and go back to attacking the boss.

If Dorian was walking bomb, wait for spiders to be all on top of the platform before you cast it, same with immolate, even if it means disabling it in their behaviors and casting it manually. I'd set Barrier and Revive (if you have it) as the only preferred abilities for Dorian.

The general idea is to wait for spiders to come to you, use barrier to absorb some damage, and once they're there, pop everything you have, spiders will die really fast if you time it well (immolate, walking bomb, iron bull AoE, Cass' payback strike).

If you have any double bladed daggers in your inventory, use those.

Configure their behaviour to defend themselves.
