Windows XP SP3 v 5.1
Asus P5N-D SLI, Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 Dual-Core
RAM:   4GB 667MHz (2X-2GB)
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 1GB DDR2 PCI Express Video Card. Driver updated today.
RealTek HD
9.0c August
Video driver version = 6.14.119621
Sound Adapter / Driver Version = 5.10.0.60291.

Both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2's configuration utilities crash when starting, specifically the standard "Send Error Report" error comes up when the "Please wait while the system information is collected" progress bar is building.
This is a Steam Version, and it happens whether I launch the utility through steam or the .exe itself.

Problem Details
Problem occurs everytime when I start the configuration utility, it abruptly aborts through the first progress bar and I get the "Send Error Report" message. It occurs with both Mass Effect 1 and 2. The game itself runs fine.
I am only concerned because I really want to use my ME1 character and have to point it toward the save file. A work around would be great.

Thank you,

I had this issue on Windows 7. To fix, I found the MassEffect2Config.exe program in the installation folder ..\\mass effect 2\\Binaries folder and ran it as an Administrator.

Doesn't seem to work for XP SP3 (what I'm running), thanks though.

Awesome, this worked as well. My config utility still crashes but at least I got this up and running. Kudos!

There's already a workaround posted on this thread. These problems usually happen if you didn't download the latest patch and install it first. Otherwise it's Windows 7 being fussy and refusing to play the game. There's plenty of workarounds though.

What about a laptop? So it's alien. There is not a question there that really makes since, and you don't seem to be asking for help because you posted no specs.....

The way I figure it, first off, we are all supposed to be clairvoyants, of course, so we don't really need a list of components, and we are all also supposed to be mind readers, so that whether or not English is everyone's birth language, we can still understand the meaning behind any collection of English-looking words hooked into a string together . .

At least, when I see the message we are looking at now, that's what it makes me think.

The workaround only deals with importing saves, not with the crashing configure utility. I actually needed to access the configure utility for another reason and I'm unable to.

Have you installed the 1.02 patch? If not, do so. Otherwise, we'll need to know your details as per the "How to" thread.

You do realise that this thread is for the ME2 config utility problem, and has nothing to do with the ME1 patch which you referred to?

No I don't and it doesn't, not only: "Both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2..." - First post, and there was no solution.

The problem with ME1 can be solved by uninstalling the physx software, by going into the control pannel and uninstalling it then restart your computer and all will work fine. it woorked for me. I am using a pentium-D processor with 1 gb RAM and GT520 1gb ddr3 silent graphic card. pls try this and reply.

Thanks.

You do not know that the recent comments were posted by any nVIDIA card owners from after the (2008) Ageia acquisition, and the game does require some kind of PhysX, so that what is on the game disk is required for Radeon owners, and whatever few owners of "old" Geforces there might be, to run on the CPU.

I've gone ahead and made the URL into a working link for the article at nVIDIA about buying Ageia, and I thought that I'd point out that the 8n00 and 9n00 video cards (same cards, new names) predated the purchase, and the GT200 series was a mid-2008 release for the GTX280, so even that one might not have included PhysX, either.

Let's reiterate one of the basics relating to this particular symptom: even if you have the required patch, if you do not have any video graphics card that the game's configuration utility can recognize, it may very well dump you right back to the desktop without any message to you at all.  That happens most often with the unusable Intel video chips.
