So I have finished my second playthrough and have begun my usual process of trying to find the strangest but most exciting builds to play like I do in games.  This time around I was thinking of combining the Sabotage and Subterfuge trees to create a rogue that shoots around with hook and tackle spreading poisons and traps.  There are a lot of skills at the end of the sabotage tree that while nice, are outshined but skills in others (who needs hook and tackle with upgraded FA for example).  I like the idea though of a highly mobile class that maybe barely even uses their weapons.  Not sure if daggers or bows would fit more with this but maybe daggers if I need that higher weapon damage.

And then the advanced class not sure either--off hand it would be Artificer, but each one has some neat synergies with sabotage.

What about you guys?  Anyone try a build like this?  Anyone doing the same thing and beginning a run with a sub-optimum but highly fun class?

I did the last play through on Nightmare with FF, but not sure if I want to attempt FF given that a lot of the abilities im looking at causes FF I think.

Anywho....bored at work....

I am always amazed and jealous at people who post from work. I wished I had a job were I can browse the net and get paid for it.

Still 65 hours on my first playthrough as main Artificer. I wish dagger Artificer worked as good as it appears in theory. :|

Utilizing the Artificer passives (CDR (Cooldown Reduction)) and the fact that traps are melee, and as the player character I have a different focus ability to use anyway, I hoped for a quick spam of dagger abilities to, in theory, be a sort of a permanent Flask of Fire user...

Well, maybe I just had crap daggers.

Anyone play around with Toxic Cloud and its subsequent possible corpse exploisons on Nightmare much?

I have created a somewhat similar build. I played the hunter class in multiplayer and loved it, so I decided to create an archer who would attack from up close and it's working :) It's not the best high-DPS build, but it has mobility and it's kinda cool to play.

I chose artificier as the spec, as it's more fitting, in my opinion, and it allows me to "heal" myself.

If you're interested:

From the archery tree --> I take all of the passives but only use a skill in the activated 8 --> Leaping Shot (more movibility, nice CC with the upgrade, allows me to get away from danger)

Then, I take all the Sabotage tree skills (but the upgrade to caltrops) --> So, add Throwing blades, Poisoned Weapons and Toxic Cloud to the activated 8.

In the subterfuge tree, I got Evade, and I use it instead of stealth, I don't use stealth with this build, but it can be used, ofc. Evade is my main "get out of trouble" skill. (low cd, low cost)

For the remaining 3, I have Elemental Mines (love it) and Fallback Plan (that's why I don't need stealth. This + evade --> full life after fights). The last one... I haven't decided yet... could be stealth, could be another shot like explosive shot, Mark of the Rift (I don't know if using Hail of Arrows would be profitable with this build, as I only have a type of shot), and Spike Trap without stealth... don't know! xD Actually I have thought about Knockout Powder, to CC if they attack me and to set up some good combos.

Anyways, that's my take on this build :) I use it in nightmare and it rocks! Just have a good tank xD

Cool build! I was thinking of doing a close range archer artificer but went for dual daggers arty instead. It's quite powerful and really fun to use. I'm not sure it qualifies as "strange", but I'll share it anyways:

1. Flank Attack+

2. Twin Fangs+

3. Throwing Blades+

4. Poisoned Weapons+

5. Stealth

6. Evade

7. Spike Trap

8. Elemental Mines+

Make sure to grab Pincushion from archery tree when you can spare the points, it works really well with elemental mines and throwing blades. I also recommend Walking Bomb and Fade Cloak masterworks (obviously hidden blades is great too). I love grouping stuff up with pull + static cage then throwing a ton of mines with poisoned weapons and walking bomb procs. You get a shower of explosions and different colored numbers xD

I didn't realize poisoned weapons affected mines, so it does the same with leaping/explosive shot as well right? That's a pretty neat synergy. Been debating between duel daggers or bow--the higher damage of the daggers would mean that mines and toxic cloud would deal more damage correct?

Also messed around with adding shadow strike but not sure if it has a place right now

Archer Artificer.

As an archer artificer I love to do silly things.
Like Hook and tackle -> Place a spike trap -> Leaping Shot
And with the distance of leaping shot and the pop up of the trap you can toss some elemental mines. So when they get up, they explode some more  :D

Or start with fall back plan and have it upgraded with bait and switch.
Take a couple steps back.

Throw some elemental mines.

Now hook and tackle -> place spike trap -> Leaping shot -> hook and tackle -> fallback plan -> they step on elemental mines = glorious fun :DD

Seriously, hook and tackle is so overlooked. Don't want to take fall damage and there are enemies below you?
Zip line to the chest!

My sabotage tree is: poisoned weapons/infected wounds. Fighting dirty, hook and tackle/beats walking, looked like it hurt. Or you can sub cheapshot for beats walking.
You skip caltrops and get something fun. Later game you might want to skip poison and just deal with caltrops and move the other two points else where.

Get everything in artificer unless you don't want throw everything. Personalty I respec alot and sometimes skip throw everything.

As for archery: Leaping shot, Long shot and Explosive are all the actives I want. Get pincushion and strafing shots if you feel like it.

Anything left over or moving away from poison dual dagger tree: twin fangs / dance of death / sneak attack

1 poisoned weapons / throwing blades / full draw / stealth

2 hook and tackle

3 leaping shot

4 long shot

5 explosive shot

6 spike trap

7 fallback plan

8 elemental mines

Sometimes I will just spam Hook and tackle all over the battlefield and dropping traps or explosive/leaping shots as I go.

Also, having Solas/Vivienne/Dorian with you makes for stupidly fun combo times.

Hook and tackle -> Spike trap + place a fire mine in the same spot
Elemental mines [the artificer kind] -> Pull of the abyss [-> Fire Mine/Static Cage if you run 2 mages]
Ice Mine -> Hook and tackle + Spike trap [or vice versa] -> Explosive shot if you did ice mine second/leaping shot if you need distance or a static cage is up.

Upgraded Fallback plan with a magic ice/mine on it. bait and switch and then the enemy lands on a magic mine.

Vivenne's Disruption field can really lead to insane crap as well.

Disrupt field -> Hook and tackle in -> Spike trap + Fire/ice Mine/Static Cage -> Leaping shot -> Artificer elemental mines

Honestly, I dropped being a mage to be an artificer and I have not regretted it.

Also, for cheapness but it's actually pretty funny when it works: place a fall back plan by an instant death cliff. If you have bait and switch sometimes you can drop enemies off the cliff. It's so funny,

My Party is sometimes: Quiz/Viv/Solas/Dorian [Damage over Time in a static Cage with magic barrages/fire mines and leaping shot is just insane]
Or I will roll Sera instead of one of the mages because Lightning Cage + Lightning Flask Bow of the griffon + critical stacked gear = no cool downs for artificer.
Sometimes I role 3 rogues and a mage and I exchange each rogue out frequently or I role 4 rogues
With Varric and Inquiz they basically have no cool downs of either of them especially is Sera pops Lighting Flask and becomes a machine gun.
Plus having cole for mark of death? Big things die faster.

I've wrecked the lvl 20+ dragons at lvl 18/19 within seconds on Nightmare.
Sometimes you just want to break the game.

I haven't even mentioned Hail of arrows with leaping shots as your party crits. Or you can hook and tackle to make the leaping shots point blank and have 24+ arrows all hitting and procing masterwork abilities.

On top of that: Mighty Potions for artificer.

Just disgusting Damage.

I'd like to an assasin using both sleeps, parry, and throwing knives.  Maybe go ranged since hidden blades and throwing knives at a distance, sleep once you get arrgo and combo off it?  Not sure how effective that would be.

How about a trap based artificer for battle field control?  I can't see it being effective compared to mages who wall of ice but they do have calotrops, snap trap and elemental mines.  Maybe go into stealth, plant a bunch of trap while the rest of the team sits back and then hit them with a leaping shot?

I'm trying two-handed champion with crit chance to reduce cooldowns on vital skills. Coupled with rift mage to put things close together and artificer to use hook and tackle, bombs and leaping shot. It's all explosions and fun, reminds me of good ol origin days.

I have come to love Hook & Tackle rogue builds as well, and Evade, not only for the combat applications but for how you can leap over gaps and such that you just can't with normal jump. You can also use hook and tackle + leaping shot in the middle of its vault animation to jump across some fun places if you drag an enemy along.

It's not a rogue build, but it is strange. I used a couple mods to make an Origins style Arcane Warrior. Mage wielding a 1handed sword with one hand, KE spirit blade with the other. LOTS and LOTS of fun. More strategy involved too.

I'm currently on a play through where I don't use any specializations for anyone.  I don't really notice that much of a difference as far as mages go.  Most bosses and dragons are immune to CC so there goes about 70% of mage spells, so why bother.  K-E is so op that it's all you really need to beat the game solo.  It's more difficult not using any specializations, but fun as well.  Only playing on Hard.  Next will be nightmare without any.
