You can get 5100 EXP (Assuming I counted right, something around that number) if you wait until you have all four knowledge perks (History, Arcane, Underworld, Nobility) which will increase Codex EXP gain from 50 to 150. VR contains about 31 or so entries. It really adds up. The more you know.
