Help Regarding Who to Roll As: I have never played Dragon Age

As stated I have never played this series. I have just finished the entire trilogy of Mass Effect playing as a black femshep sniper (infiltrator) protagonist mostly paragon with occasional renegade options. Totally loved it and am now up for Dragon Age although I get that it will be significantly different. But I need those Bioware style companions and difficult choices to rebound to so I can get my fix.

I am interested in how in this trilogy the three different protagonists all are separate characters but exist within the existing universe. Without any major spoilers I wanted to ask if I could be told a basic sentence or so of what the Warden, Champion and Inquisitor represent within the lore/world. I've tried looking at wikis but found the information either too vague or spoilery. My understanding is that the Warden fights the Blight (orcs), the Champion gets involved in the political feuds of a city (between religion Vs magic?) and that the Inquisitor also takes a side here between an erupted conflict of religion and magic.

I'm wondering if by playing as three mages throughout (perhaps each being a variable shade of 'good/neutral/evil') would make for an interesting trilogy experience? It seems that mages are the most lore-centric class to pick, seeing as priests are not an option. Or am I overemphasizing the continuity in these stories and are they really more standalone?

Any thoughts or feedback greatly welcome. But please no spoilers (i.e. anything significant mentioned beyond the first third of any the three games please). Cheers all.

You're pretty much spot-on. Mage will net you the most reactivity. For example, if the Warden was a mage in DA Origins, during the growing discontent of mages in Dragon Age 2, a character will mention that mages are treated like crap even though one saved all of them. Stuff like that.

You can't really play an evil guy in Inquisition, though.

There really isn't anything to link the protagonists, so I'd say pick whatever sounds more interesting. For this, you'd need to know more about the races than the previous protagonists. But I'll give you both.

The Warden will be viewed as the savior of the nation of Ferelden and could be alive or dead. I really don't know what they would mean outside of Ferelden. He/she could be male or female and human, elf, or dwarf. He led the effort to defeat the Darkspawn, and evil race of creatures that live underground, led by an Archdemon, which is a corrupted dragon. Origins is a great game and I recommend it.

Hawke is a human and is famous for his or her role in events leading up to the war between Templars and Mages. Again, it's hard to say what people think of him outside of Kirkwall, where Dragon Age 2 takes place. In the Dragon Age universe, Mages are forced to live in "Circles" where they can be watched by Templars, fighters who resist magic. This is because mages attract demons who try to possess them, creating powerful creatures called Abominations. Many mages resent this oversight, especially because some Templars abuse their power. One of Hawke's mage companions blew up a church with which the Templars are associated. DA2 was ok and it's worth a play if you can pick it up. It will help you understand the setting.

The Inquisitor somehow has the ability to seal rifts in the Veil, the barrier which separates the real world from the spirit world, called The Fade.

For the races, humans are the primary power on the Continent of Thedas, but they are split into several countries. The Elves are in 2 major groups. Some live in human society but are 2nd class citizens and live in poor ghettos called Alienages. The other group, called the Dalish, live in their own communities, often wandering, and holding on to their old ways. The Dwarves are very traditional and have a caste system. Most live underground and shun those who choose to live on the surface. They can not be mages.

The Qunari are a race of giants, but the term actually also refers to their religion, so there are Qunari of other races as well. It is a system of order in which everyone has a role, similar to the caste system. They spread their ways through conquest, even more so than the Chantry, the other major religious order.

The heroes are all standalone, but their choices shape many events of Inquisition.

Have you tried the Keep? You can read about the events and shape your choices. It's going to be spoilery, but you'll learn about the previous events. If you choose the default world state, you'll miss out on a lot of stuff.

Anyways, the Warden's goal was to stop the Fifth Blight. Choices don't affect as much though. One of the major choices was who rules Ferelden. Leliana, Morrigan and Alistair were companions. Mostly NPCs return.

Hawke was caught in a war between mages and templars in Kirkwall. It's a more personal story. They become Champion after saving the city from a Qunari attack. In this case, the templars were overzealous but mages were corrupt. Both sides had their points, but someone (spoiler) forces a war. You resolve this in Inquisition.

Cassandra interrogated Varric regarding what happened to Hawke. Varric's the returning companion, so you might miss out on his story.

I really recommend the Keep. I think it's better to be spoiled than miss out.

Personally, my Warden was a warrior, and both Hawke and the Inquisitor were mages. It doesn't really matter, but that's how I feel it best involves the plot.

Sounds like three mages is the way to go.

Thanks for the detailed posts but both of your descriptions are a bit spoilery regarding the endings of DA1!!! Sorry I realise it's difficult asking for non-spoilery spoilers so I've tried to not read them too much. Thanks anyway.

If you're going to play three mages, I recommend different races for each, as well as choosing a different specialisation for each to make each one more unique.

Final recommendation: Play a Female Elven mage that romances Solas first. (That's all I can say. Any more details would be super spoilery)

After that, Human or Qunari mage, whichever you prefer.

It's a spoiler that you beat the bad guy? I guess.
