Been playing the game for a few days now and taking my time in the hinterlands, doing all the quests/exploring and level 7 last time I checked. What I'm wondering is when I get a new companion, will their level be the same as mine or will I have to level them up from scratch and work their way up to me?

 

I'm hoping they level up to whatever level I am, or taking my time with the side quests would sure feel like a waste because new companions wouldn't be getting the share of the XP.

 

So if someone could answer this for me, that would be great.

All companions are roughly half a level behind you. When you get a new companion they will catch up as well, although their ability points will not be pre-allocated.

Note that you can respec yourself or companions at any time - respec amulets are available at the blacksmith's.
