I'm being hassled by a CD check on startup, which makes no sense.

Seriously, this is the year analysts are saying digital downloads are going to catch up if not over take cd sales... Heck, I usually buy digital myself, but the CE when I ordered it only came in physical form, and now I get punished by being forced to constantly take out the CD and stick it in my computer.  I've actually busted the CD's of a couple games because of being forced to constanly take the CD out and mess with it, so this forced behavior puts the game at risk.

Please release a patch for the CD check ASAP.

Hey,

In response to customer feedback on our DRM for ME1 (PC) we decided to return to a simple disk check for ME2 (PC). This requires players who purchased the disk-based version of the game to keep the game disk in their computer's DVD drive during play.

I love the Mass Effect 1 system. No CD, just activation in the first run, and then you don't have to get up to get your pretty original cd.

What you don't know is that Mass Effect 1 had only 3 activations available. Once you exhausted those, you had to contact EA support. I'd much rather have a simple CD check. The digital download is on a 5 download limit.

Not to sound mean, but that sounds like a personal problem. I have game CDs from the mid to late 90s that work just fine, and that's after multiple moves and misplacements. If you take good enough care of your property, it'll last.

The best system so far is what was used by dragon age.

Edit:
It was limited to 5 installs every 24 hours or something. But you coudnt run out of installs.

Try using the EA Download Manager. Activate your ME2 key on there and then download the entire game, don't use your DVD install. Afterwards, you should be able to start it up without the disc, but you will need to log in to EADM in order to play it. It's your choice though. Use a disc so that you can play it if, or when, you happen to have no connection, or use the online check, which could cause you issues if you have no internet access.

If you want to play without your disk, you can use your CD key in the EA Download manager to get a digital version. (With Digital DRM instead of a disk check)

So you apparently haven't played any games that were released before 2006ish?  I would MUCH rather have a simple disc check than the idiotic DRM measures most new games use.  Just look at GTA4 for PC for a way to really screw up authentication.

I personally prefer the disc check, install limits suck, I'm not sure how you bust up discs though, I've got Quake 1 and Unreal 1 discs sitting around in great condition.

Though sins of a solar empire definitely wins in regards to drm, no disc check, nothing, just a registration code for online play

And this is why I love you all! I had severe problems with ME1 upon release becouse of its SecuROM DRM which won't let me run it back then, there was no way for me that I had to use an "unpopular workaround" to let it work, and really THANK YOU for getting the CD-Check in Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 :)

Agree 100%. if they have to put anything on the disc, I prefer a simple disc check.

If it's not reading the disc properly it's either A) You need to clean or replace your cd/dvd drive or B) Your disk is damaged or dirty.

Honestly , I don't care what companies do as long as it takes seconds and is hastle and problem free. When they reward you for registering etc it helps. As someone said above it does need to be carefully done to keep buying actual discs worthwhile.
Overall I have no problem having the disc in when I play a game. I bought the game , the disc has the game on it. What else do I use it for ? A beer holder?

Install limits , tend to show over-confidence in companies , which comes back and kicks them in the teeth when the game has many probs requiring buyers to reinstall. Not going into details but there's plenty of those companies around , thankfully Bioware ain't one of them. I could name a few tho...

So... for those who didn't like the SecurRom on the first game, there's now a disk check for the second one. But to get your characters from the first one to the second one, you still have to have the first one installed. So now you have to deal with SecurRom in your system AND a disk check. Fail.

You dont have to have the first game installed. You only need to have your save games stored somewhere.
