this maybe or obviously a stupid question, but how does magic defense work exactly?

is it the percentage chance not to get status effect?

or is it percentage of reduced elemental attack?

Magic Defense
The percentage of damage resistance to all magical or elemental attacks.

Basically damage is reduced.

I think the chance for status effects from elemental attacks depends on the damage dealt, so magic defense should reduce the chance as a result.
