So, I completed the story in my first playthrough over the weekend and started my second.  And this time, after unlocking the Storm Coast and talking with Scout Harding, I immediately start hearing dragon shrieks.  This was odd to me, because in this zone during my first playthrough, I never saw or heard from the dragon until I tracked it down to fight it - long, long after I first started exploring the area.

I continued to hear the dragon as I walked around the area, and as I walked down to the beach from the hills, there she was, fighting a giant (which I had also never seen in this area before).  The giant is quickly killed, and I am given +383 XP and a codex entry, lol.  I guess because of my proximity?  The dragon then flies away.

I think it's a scripted event that is usually supposed to happen. I experienced it on my first playthrough, although she didn't outright kill the giant before flying off. She did, however, injure it enough that he was down after a few hits... some nice loot for my low-level party!

Thanks, Vinsomer! I'll make sure to kill you last on my trophy-hunting playthrough. :P

The companions even have banter about it.

OK cool.  I think I may have missed this the first time because I waited until the Iron Bull was available before going to the area then.  Went ASAP this time and did a lot of exploring beforehand.  Still, its fun to see that decesions you make can effect how the game plays through.

As soon as you talk to Harding you should've geard and seen it flying around. But yeah, definitely a scripted event.

OK thanks.  Absolutely what happened this time.  Didn't the first, but as I said, I went much later that time around.  Perhaps the Bull and his crew being on the beach prevent it from loading.

My first playthrough the dragon left and I had to face the giant. I killed him no problem so I think he was pretty low level. This time I waited and did something else first. When I got back, both the dragon and the giant were gone. I did find a nice drop though - maybe the dragon killed the giant and left me this gift.

Really? The dragon and giant are still fighting in my game (I'm level 18 now). I stood there for a good five minutes, but the dragon never managed to kill the giant. No XPs either.

I'm going to be completely honest and say I shamelessly hang out at some distance, monitored the fight and swooped in to steal the killonce it was down to around one quarter health left.

Opportunism yay.

And yes, I'm pretty sure that is a scripted event.

I tried to kill the dragon the first time I saw it. I saw that the giant took about 20% of its health, so it would be easier. But then the dragon flew away when the giant.

It's a scripted event, so they'll keep fighting until you get close enough for the dragon to fly away and the giant to turn to you.

The dragon is meant to fly away once the Inquisitor gets within a certain distance. If you observe the fight from far enough away, the dragon eventually kills the giant and you get the loot and XP.

I've had that happen to me a few times. I always reload because **** it, I'm taking down that giant on my own.

Second play through I think the giant actually forced the dragon to retreat, I watched the whole thing from far away, never moving.  The dragon did it's stumble thing, then flapped its wings and flew away..then I killed the giant
