Dragon's Dogma has one of the most extensive character creation systems of any rpg and with the right formaula you can make almost any npc in found within the game, but in Dragon Age Inquisitions it's hard to make a character who doesn't look mildly deformed or has gone head to head with a beltsander.

taking some problems with lighting in the game-altering skin tones and makeup, the character creator of this game is great and allows you to create great characters.

Now if you are having problems creating maybe you should see this post.

Loved the diversity of choices in DD and the ability to chance appearance at will - with the purchase of that book!

It's that the CC used in DAI  is heavily relint on the sliding bars (which I don't realy like), similar to the one used in Skryim. But in Dragon's Dogma you had a variety of different face shapes.

I played an overweight red-headed woman in DD because it was a nice departure from your typical "hero."

DD's CC was a-okay.

Hell you could create a small overweight character with comicly oversized arms and legs, complete with a head that looks like a Moa statue just because you could

I love it when people talk about Dragon's Dogma.  I'll spare you all the ten page document of me just going 'DD WAS THE BEST GAME EVER GIB ME SEQUEL CAPCOM'.

But yeah, I prefer the preset variety that we got in DD, but DA:I's creator let's people fine tune things they want as needed. That chin just a LITTLE too wide for you? *tick tick tick* there.

DAI has the best CC options I've seen in a rpg to date. Its versatility allows for facial sculpting that can mimic the possibilities of zbrush or mud box in a game. You can recreate any npc in this game aside from their hairstyle, just as you can recreate anyone in real life provided you have a sufficient amount of reference photos.

Dragon's Dogma and Saint's Row 2 remain the high water mark that has been set for Character Creators and customization.

Note, however, that both games suffered severe shortages in the resources expended in other areas.

I'm still early in DA:I, so I'll reserve judgement somewhat, but if it had been up to me, I would have preferred smaller exploration areas and greater depth of character creation (and especially the option to tweak characters after creating them.)

That watermark is about to be shattered by Black Desert.

DD's CC was versatile, but it was also PS3 level art assets. The versatility of a character creator is kind of secondary to the amount of resources required to power the thing. I mean its not like Bioware ( or any other company making a game with a player made PC ) would decide to not have as versatile a CC as possible. Its ultimately all a matter of time and resources.

Ditto on Black Desert. Its looks pretty and versatile but so did Aion and that turned out.....yeah. It also has gender locked classes ( Want to be a male ranger or a male sorcerer? Too bad. ), Aion style combat/advancement ( Twitchy, grindy, no level cap ) and its F2P ( and all the potentially horror that entails ). Plus Korean mmo aesthetics ( so panty shots, 3 layers of make up and impractical ****** armour ).

So....yeah. >.>

DD's CC was good in some aspects, but the facial customization felt really...weak, compared to the general customization of everything else.

It was great to change your character at any time even the gender. If you had the easy normal and hard game play options you could switch to hard and easy it would reset the game to the start where you could go to the customization but also keep everything so far in states and gear.

The screenshot was also a bonus on the 360.

I would say that the facial creation in DA:I is pretty good in terms of editing, but DD had more variety in terms of actual structure. I personally though that Bioware should have allowed us to edit the bodies at least a little. Hear me out first! It doesn't have to be as broad as DD, but what is Bioware actually thinking when they design the bodies of our characters. My human warrior looks like she could barely lift a twig and her chest is about to burst out of her shirt! That and the elf, though I know they are supposed to be lithe looking, look as though they have been starved. The only ones who look good in my opinion are the vashoth and dwarf bodies. Heck, a slider that simply allows you to change the thickness of your character (like in Skyrim) would have been nice, so my warrior doesn't look like she could be snapped in half. And before anybody goes off about clipping and having to edit all the clothes/armors, there are already a lot of  clipping and morphing issues in the game as it is. When I run, my characters butt bursts through the back of her coat for no reason.

The hair options in DD were great and the devs weren't too concerned about hair clipping. The presets weren't too great but I think if DD and DAI CC were merged together, it would be the best creator by far....in my dreams

le sigh, people making me all depressed that my PS3 is dead, and I can't play Dragon's Dogma anymore because I can't afford a new one yet.

Love that game.  Every time I see a giant in DAI, I want to climb it's back and punch it in the eye.

...Then after blinding it, you rodeo it over to the edge of a cliff and then leap off as it tumbles into the watery abyss below.

And if that doesn't work, remember that it hates fire!

We should totally make a Dragon's Dogma 'gush' thread before we get too far off topic. With that said, I think the problem with a DD creator in DA:I (despite being amazing) is largely the matter of extra resources and the fact that in DD you could make a dwarf or elf without the need of selecting a race. Then there's the matter of story: in DA:I you have preset backgrounds, some of which cater more towards the Inquisitor being of a certain age than others. They tend to be adults in their prime. Think back to the noble origins in, well, Origins: it doesn't make sense for your Cousland/Aeducan to be the oldest...and older than your parents.

This type of background isn't notable for The Arisen or to the story of Dragon's Dogma in whole, so you can make largely anyone and not have any problems. ^_^

Yeah, the Arisen was a 100% blank slate in a game without a novel's worth of world building behind the character creator. If Bioware did there would be riots over not being able to actually be x race and be treated like y in the game.

The bad thing about Dragon's Dogma is it's too short. if there is even the possibility of finishing a open world rpg in just over 90 minutes, the dev team have failed badly.

You gotta admit though, the main story was one hell of a ride...and in some cases literally.

But to go back to the actual topic at hand, DA:I let's you fine tweak things far better than you could in DD, which gave you presets that you could slightly alter the width or maybe height of...Couldn't make a buck-toothed person in DD, but you couldn't make a fat, one eyed bald, pink eyebrowed inquisitor.

The thing that shouldn't be changed in the current CC is the non-slider editing (where you move your cursor in the square). That's amazing and much easier to use.
