Uh... You can disable those, you know? Personally I'd hate it. I don't like feeling lost.

Quests are supposed to tell a story, to give your character a chance to improve, to develop, to interact with the world. This can be done in a multitude of ways. The quest doesn't have to be about you, the player. You move the plot forward but it's the story at the core of the quest that matters. 

 

Fetch quests ... or better... every quest that can be done in a minute is only a task at best. Telling a good story takes time. 10 good side quests are better than 100 fetch quests/collections/etc. Quality over quantity... and if those quests tie into the main quest, it's even better. DA:O had such a system for its main story and it's possible to adapt that for side quests, too.

 

A quest isn't just about exp and loot, it is about roleplaying your character. What kind of roleplay can you do when you collect mosaics or shards? You need NPCs for that. Then your character can be brave or cowardly. Greedy or generous. Clever or stupid. Flirty or aloof. etc.

 

If the quest is designed properly, if the story of it is told well... then you don't need the UI to show you what to do next. When the scared villagers tell you that they hear unnatural noises in the east at night and that they have seen weird shadows move inside the woods, then you already know where to go.

 

I quite like the search function in DA:I... when it's actually used to search for something. It's not perfect but a good start. You are given directions (drawn maps), you see clues (ruins) and once you get close enough, you can pinpoint the spot you are looking for with the search function.

 

We had those kinds of quests in older games but they fell out of favor because of the whole "bigger, louder, brighter" trend. If company A has 25 side quests, then company B counters with 35. And after a certain point the quests become very simple, very short and very dumb. Quantity can't replace quality.
