I have noticed that one handed swords in this game get the shaft hard. I almost never find one handed swords in drops or schematics. and if I do they are like at 89 DPS while axes and maces are at like 125 dps. Why?
Why is there such a lack of good one handed swords in this game?

They do seem to be rather neglected, but one thing to consider is that DPS isn't the end-all. A lot of swords have higher damage per hit, and thus all abilities that do multiples of weapon damage will do more from a sword than equivalent level axe. Or at least that was my casual observation...

I've heard this too. 
Anyway, CRAFTED swords are a whole different matter. Made a one-handed dwarven longsword for Cassandra that not only did better damage than Blackwall's crafted axe, but also healed on kills, caused extra damage to corrupted creatures and added a bunch of strength.

Part of the reason I switched my Warrior to two-handed once I got to lvl 18 or thereabouts.

Its hard to miss the wave sword schematic if you do side with mages. GL finding the freaking masterwork tevinter longsword though :/

Keep in mind DPS is not what you want. Damage is what impacts ability damage. DPS is just for auto-attack.

Is DPS better for a tank weapon? I mean most of a tank's activated abilities will be defensive won't they.

It depends on what ranking abilities you end up using. I think the tank should still have shield bash to crush guard, even if you use the champion build.
