Ok, so question. Im trying to romance dorian this play through and ive gotten to the part where my next step is halamshiral. I made a save then proceeded to the winter palace only i have no option to ask him to dance like all other companions(this is my 6th playthrough, and sixth romance). Ive exhausted all conversations thus far with him yet i havent gotten the quest from mother giselle to go see his father. And since i cant remember whether i got that quest before or after halamshiral in other playhroughs or if it mattered, idk if ive messed up? I cant say i went out of my way to build up my friendship with dorian in other playthroughs since i was focusing more on my current romanced character. Does the winter palace quest have any bearing on whether or not the quest to meet his father appears? Will i not get a dance scene with dorian?

Don't think so, you can lock into his romance before the warden mission or halamshiral. You need his approval up though so make sure to kill the venatori in his mini quest, and then you have to go talk to a person he knows in a tavern. Siding with mages gives you great approval with him, but I did it siding with templars. And hit every heart you see!!

Yea ive.done all that. Ive done his venatori quest, i sided with the mages, i made sure i picked all the options to get approval from him. But i havent gotten the mission to talk to his dad in the tavern. The last conversation i had with him was "tell me about the imperium" and since then, nothing. No approval or disapproval for anything i say or do.

Im afraid it might be bugged. But i thoight they fixed that with tge first patch. My first several playthroughs i got stuck at this point in the friendship. The two i played after the patch i got the mission to talk to his dad. But now its stuck again...

It sounds like it. Unless you have an earlier save, you're probably out of luck.

I haven't seen any satisfactory explanation for this issue, and I'm not aware of any reliable workaround (a lot of people seem to suggest stuff before getting to Skyhold, but I don't think it's related beyond hoarding approval so you can get the conversation early—it seems to be something that happens, or doesn't happen, in Skyhold that keeps the conversation from ever firing).

Weird cuz like i said, after the patch, i was able to trigger the mission two other times. But not now.when im trying to romance him =(

I guess i shall just pause this playthrough and romance someone else in a different playthrough until another patch comes out =(

I feel your pain. I couldn't get the personal mission, even though I had done Dorian's fetch quest and thought I had high approval with him, and yet my Inquisitor who romanced Cassandra had no problem getting his personal quest! I ended up romancing the Iron Bull, which was great but not what I was going for! 

 

I've heard a rumour that you can shut off any chance of romancing Dorian if you select certain dialogue about his mentor, but I'm stuffed if I know what that is.

That... does sound like it could be bugged. I really hope that's not the case, but yeah...

 

I know for a fact you don't even have to do his Venatori quest to initiate a romance with him. I sided with the mages and hit every flirt option I could get, and when we got to Skyhold and I exhausted all his dialogue options there (right after arriving that was the first thing I did)... BAM, Mother Giselle with her letter from daddy Pavus. Did that quest, initiated the romance, did the Fallow Mire and got my first judgement quest (the goat throwing guy), which gave me some more approval from Dorian and BAM, romance quest.

 

This was before I even met Varric's warden friend or went to Halamshiral. And yeah, danced with him too.

 

It's strange. I wish I could help you out, OP, but I really have no idea.

Idk, i did a little searching, found some tips from others, and tried them out. Finally was able to trigger the Last Resort of Good Men quest. Unfortuanately it involved me.literally starting over from the very beginning because i messed the whole thing up in haven



Heres how i fixed it: i didnt talk to dorian AT ALL in Haven. When i got to Skyholfld, the first thing i did was exhaust every conversation with him (saving.before each one of course). I asked him about alexius THEN i judged him (made him serve the mages). Then i ran around storm coast for a bit to refresh skyhold, talked to him again and got the convo about felix and was able to then trigger The Last Resort of Good Men from mother giselle. From there, everything else happened quickly. Im only in crestwood and have already had the sex scene lol


But thats wht i did and was able to continue my much anticipated romance so if anyone else is having issues, try this

Also, in case anyone didnt know, (and since the game apparentlt doesnt give you any kind of real hint this is happening), DO NOT kill ponchard. Either give in, or tell him no and do the war table mission that follows. You will be unable to flirt with or further your romance with dorian if ponchard dies..

The main problem is conversation with Alexius. I checked every possibility (exhausted every conversation, talked to him only about Alexius, exhausted every dialogue, but left Alexius dialogue, etc, etc) and it seems that if you ask him about Alexius in Haven, his personal quest won't trigger. At least for me. That's why I can't choose templars- Alexius conversation is not available at all, because I haven't encountered him.

If you haven't gotten the quest to see his father, it's most likely because you don't have a high enough approval. You may have exhausted all dialogue up until then but if you didn't choose the right replies, Dorian's approval won't go up enough to allow you to get his personal quest before you do Halamshiral. I would say start another playthrough and check guides to make sure you choose the right answers. Also, this might be sort of a dumb question, but you did choose the mages over the templars, right? I think that definitely allows you to get a high enough approval quicker than if you didn't.

No i had nothing.but approval from that whole playthrough. After a certain point, i got no approval or disapproval from him for anything i said or did no matter what. So my approval level with him had nothing to do with it
