Does anyone have any tips on defeating red Templar troops (especially archers). I've just made it to Emprise du Lion and any group of red Templars bigger than 5-6 just destroys my group in seconds. Not sure if I'm being rubbish or need to level up more and tackle it further down the line?

I'd use tactical camera to check their level first. You might be under leveled.

Also, what difficulty are you on?

Suppose you encounter a nasty group, with 2 knights, 2 marksmen, 1 shadow, 1 guard, 1 horror and 1 behemoth. (I know, not realistic, but it should illustrate).

This is what I would do on my dagger rogue:

  1. Pop barrier on all members, and quickly run towards the templars while controlling my tank, so all enemies will initially focus on him. If you're lacking guard, you might want to wait until you have 2 or 3 templars nearby for war cry.
  2. Order the 2 other damage dealer to focus fire on an archer, while I solo the other archer (they die fast, but they also do a lot of damage, so they're a good choice for first kills. Make sure to avoid AoE, use single target abilities to avoid
  3. By this time, all melee templars should be on your tank, make sure all your dps is keeping their distance from he tank.
  4. Order the 2 damage dealers to focus fire on the horror, while I kill the shadow. Shadows are easier with your controlled character, AI characters will lose their target when the shadow pops stealth. They also should die relatively fast.
  5. After marksmen, horrors and shadows are down, you can proceed to kill knights, guards and behemoths either with AoE (your tank will have solid aggro) or one by one. I run with Solas as a rift mage, so I just pop Pull of the Abyss and AoE the crap out of all of them, you can even get 1 or 2 ranged/shadow templars with this if they're standing close to the melee guys.

Hope it helps!

Quite possibly they're too high a level for you.

That said, archers are important to take out, either through burst or CC. Abilities which panic enemies, like the Wall of Fire, can be very useful.

FYI - Be sure to remove any Berserker effects from weapons & shields; was my reason for epic fails with this group initially.

I'm still trying to understand why the berserk effect was added, seems worse than useless to me in most situations.

The only class that might benefit from something like this is a stealth rogue, the risk is not worth the reward otherwise.

Have a friend on another forum that was going to try it with her Knight Enchanter; said it might be better than increasing the Difficulty setting.

Varric never changes his ranged weapon aka Bianca, I came across a superb cleansing rune and enchanted it into Bianca and since I will just upgrade her and never change her for anything else the rune is never wasted. With it I simply ordered Varric to attack red templar archers and he made short work of them while I simply drew their aggro.

In general try to focus an archer and if there is more than one CC the rest.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm level 10 at moment so do need to level up more also need to pay attention the powers the Templars have activated and make sure I set up to remove them.

I read somewhere that Dispel should stop the energizer Templar with the Red Lyrium lightning from doing its thing; could be helpful.

Since you are only level 10 and they are probably level 16... cheapest/safest way to deal with them when the terrain allows it is to stay very very far away from them - use a mage, select an archer and kill him (mage has infinite range, as long as you can select it, you can hit it) . The AI is dumb and will not retaliate. Lightning spells works best - especially chain lightning, it will hit selected targets even when you do not have line of sight and everyone around them

Yeah... tis cheap I know but since you are only level 10.... well :P

What difficulty are you on?  On higher difficulties Red Templars have pretty durable armor, and so I've found that making sure your Rogues and Warriors all have good armor pen or armor sundering abilities really makes a difference. Templar Shadows, for instance, while Assassins themselves, have stupid high armor on Nightmare and are best fought with a variety of sunder effects.
