Why would you want to kill your companions? I understand for evil PT's I guess but when I play a evil character I just kick em out or turn down their offer to join. Killing your companions is just...just...wrong D: Tho I really REALLY wanted to tackle Viv and punch her repeatedly whenever she'd taunt Cole. I was hoping a dialogue wheel would pop up while she was talking to Cole like that so I could tell her "BACK OFF" or "SHUT UP" or something lol, I felt a huge need to defend him.
Caution, sometimes. If you're not going to recruit Zevran, killing him is the smarter move. Really it's a smarter move than recruiting him, even though recruiting him can pay off well enough.
Likewise, Cole. When you first meet Cole you have nothing but his word that he isn't a demon and that he wants to help. When he just poofs into the war room, I should be able to put a sword in him instead of having Cassandra ask what type of demon he is. Seriously, why does she waste time with that nonsense? You don't need to know that to put a sword to it.
And, of course, you have situations like Anders where it's perfectly reasonable for a player/PC to decide that they've done something they deserve to die for. I know some people were disappointed that Isabela can't face real comeuppance for her role in the Qunari invasion(she escapes if you hand her over).
That being said, I personally don't mind the optional killing of characters be kept to a minimum. If nothing else, it makes it all the more impactful when it does happen. And it will also cut down on situations where they decide they have a role in the next game and think to themselves "You know what, this character from this previous game would be perfect at this. I know people could kill them off, but that's optional and I'm sure no one took that option."
*cough*Leliana*cough*
I'm sorry, sore throat. I said Leliana.
But yea, if they think they're going to need a given character to fill a vital role in a future game, I think they should have the foresight to keep that character alive. I would rather not be able to kill them than be able to kill them only for them to be brought back.
