So the elven Inquisitor is Dalish and the Dalish are pretty much sticklers for all things elven so why is it that when you're playing as a Dalish elf you can't understand Solas? Or the Fear Demon when it speaks to him? Or the other elves?...

I mean, shouldn't it show up in subtitles? I know that would give things away a little and spoil the marvel style ending but you know, it would make sense.
After all 'The Thing' gave away the whole plot in the first 2-3 minutes of the movie if you understand Norwegian....

If you play a Dalish, I guess you're supposed to learn the language but, a Dalish to English dictionary would help. I'm learning but, slowly LOL.

There are subtitles in Solas's personal quest. The Dalish Inquisitor apparently slept during the language classes that covered the vocabulary used by the Nightmare in the Fade and by Abelas, though.

Patrick Weekes said in a tweet that he had to check to see if there were future spoilers for the Nightmare conversation before he could give an official translation, though, and since he hasn't give out a translation as far as I know...so I guess the answer is that they wanted to avoid spoilers even if the Dalish Quiz understanding would make sense.

They are probably speaking Fade and not elven :P

I suppose it translates to:

Nightmare: Yo! Sup Wolf. How goes the company of these pathetic mortals?

Solas: Insufferable.

Dalish Elves only know small fragments of Elvish.  Think of it like your average American Jew and Hebrew (especially ancient Hebrew).

That makes it funny that there are subtitles in Solas's personal quest since the designer notes say that the Spirit of Wisdom is speaking ancient elven.

It's inconsistent. Lavellan understands the elvish conversation Solas has with his friend in his personal quest, and Lavellan even speaks elvish at certain points, but there are "hiccups" in the game where the developers basically treat your elven Inquisitor as though he was an Andrastian human, like when your protagonist asks Morrigan who 'Mythal' is, or how the initial one-on-one conversation with Dorian basically treats your character as though he was Andrastian, rather than Dalish.

Samanthaj:

Three options:

1) They chose words the Dalish Elf knew

2) The spirit of wisdom was able to use her powers to make herself understood

3) The developers decided that scene would have more impact if the player understood what was said, and the Dalish Inquisitor didn't actually understand it.

i sort of figured it would be like an Italian person trying to understand Latin. Sure, the languages are related... but not terribly so; especially if the Italian comes from a non-literate culture.

Also, it's already been translated by a fan who actually compiled an ancient Elvhen lexicon.

My guess is they are speaking an ancient dialect of the language. I doubt the elven spoken now is much like it was 1000 years ago considering whats happened to the elves.

1. Possible.

2. Also possible.

3. My Inquisitor actually did understand because she said something like "I heard what that spirit said to you..." and repeated it to make Solas feel better or something.

Let's not forget that the dalish Inquisitor also asks Morrigan, 'who is Mythal' at the Temple of Mythal.  Is s/he stupid, or just trolling Morrigan?

The reason for this is that it isn't a Dalish Elf playing the inquisitor and it's some people's first time playing a dragon age game.

Someone asked Patrick Weekes and he said it was probably an error. The Dalish Inquisitor is supposed to know these things even when the player doesn't.

Timescale/character development. Making the character canon to new players, changing the races late on because people were flipping out. Reasons.

I'm syill building up the 'power' to go do that mission wit hteh Mythal dialogue, lol, so sick of grinding out power. This is suposed to be a pure story run.
But yeah, I also meant to mention about the Eluvian as she seems totally clueless to that too. But I guess I'd have to play DA2's Meryl story again to remind me if they're generally a mystery to the Dalish or not.

I'm guessing she won't recognize Flemeth/Asha bel'anar either, even though she's apparently well known to teh Dalish Elves..

Lavellan doesn't recognise her on sight but if Flemeth didn't stick around the Free Marches then it makes sense she wouldn't. She does call her Asha Bel'Anar though.

I don't think eluvians are that well known, to most dalish they'd just be another lost artifact.

I agree with the people who think Solas may have been speaking an older dialect of Elvish. Languages are like living things and they evolve over the millenia. A person fluent in English today would not understand a 10th Century Saxon speaking the English of his era.

This is not a bad point actually. Flemeth had damn all to do with the elves in Origins too.

Yeah it's really weird, especially when you need Morrigan to translate your own language to you <_<

That bugged me to no end. I was like 'Did you hit your head when you feel out of the Fade....Fool' And to top it off, Lavellan then goes on to explain all about the other Gods. Not to mentopn being all' Really your Mythal? My poeple pryed to you' Seriously Woman, make up your mind.

But it's not his language, anymore than Hebrew is to an American Jew

Ancient Hebrew. A fair number of non-Isreali's will speak modern Hebrew.
