A lot of people go through an identity crisis.

The way I see it, for the majority of people who don't have dependents, their life is pointless and the world wouldn't stop if they suddenly disappeared.  It's a depressing thought.  Naturally, it doesn't do well to dwell on that thought.

This is my attitude towards life right now.

What is this scan of the brain showing exactly?

I suffer from depression and anxiety disorder among some other garbage, been taking medication most of my life to make things tolerable. It would be hard to function without that. Talk of self-worth is largely unhelpful nonsense. The only realistic thing to do is to hate everybody else more than you do yourself. It works.

yeah, can relate. Could say me not being around probably would make much of a thud on the world around me, but it's not that big of a concern for me I guess.

"A PET scan can compare brain activity during periods of depression (left) with normal brain activity (right). An increase of blue and green colors, along with decreased white and yellow areas, shows decreased brain activity due to depression."

Isn't it a chemical imbalance though? I'm surprised it would appear in such a manner. I presume those are the parts of the brain that are supposed to fool you into thinking things don't suck.

*walks back in*

Addressing a lot of issues at a personal level that needs to be taken. Building up self-confidence being the leading issue. So just taking my time and starting off slow is about all I can do.

More exercises = better figure = confidence

better scheduling of time for homework = more free time and time to do what I want and unwind

try being more social = finding a women (finally) to act as an emotional anchor for me

Re-evaluation of what I want to do with my life = actually knowing what career I want after college and how I can pursue it

stuff like that.

I admit, I don't really find that much value in my life at the moment, not in the sense of " I'm going to end it" or anything, that's just stupid. And it's not like I blame other people for how I am, they never did anything wrong to me. lel But at the moment, I just don't value myself that much, will put other peoples problems before me, and for the most part be extremely over nice with everything. Who knows? maybe I'm just acting that way to garner more attention, I'm not really sure. But I have to fight this on my own frankly. But talking about it here really takes off some of the stress of it. Thanks everyone. I appreciate your comments and support.

I'm sure it would have a large impact on your family and friends.  I was talking about in the 'grand scheme of things'.

At your age you really should just be doing what makes you happy.  You should be doing what makes you happy regardless of age, but right now you should be your number one priority.  I'm 23 right now and literally do whatever the hell I want and I'm happier for it.  I've been burned by some people recently, so I'm really cooling off on people in general for a while.  I get kind of lonely sometimes, but I think everyone does to a certain extent, and for the most part I'm happy.  Too many people get caught up in trying to make other people happy whilst forgetting about themselves - I've made that mistake.

You're asking a question that nobody really has a good answer for. The pathophysiology of depression, like all other psychiatric conditions, is still poorly known. Chemical imbalance is one way to look at how depression works. But, it's an explanation to another poorly understood phenomenon - how psychiatric medications even work. Yet, drugs that increase serotonin levels between brain cells, like SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and tricyclics don't necessarily work on every individual and can come with some terrible non-psychiatric side effects because psychopharmacological treatment is equivalent to hammering a nail with a crusher. But, the benefits outweigh the risks with proper management. So que sera sera...

I once got erectile dysfunction from medication once.  Was a rather awkward conversation with the 30 something female doctor.

Never happened before and hasn't happened since I stopped taking those meds.  Anyway, it happens to everyone.  My friend couldn't get it going once when he was 12!
