My wife is not adverse to saying directly and loudly, "Bugger off." But most people twig pretty quick and have that kind of embarrassed or don't know what to say to you kind of sheepish look. We live in a smaller community, so most folks (I used to hate that word and now use it a lot) know us and we get along. Conservative America, we may be queers but we are their queers.

 

I'm actually puzzled when people have that reaction, and I don't think it's just conservative America. Then again, I'm queer also.

I found that in the city many people had been exposed to gay and had either worked through the surprise or just plain did not care. But even upstate New York was an experience and now in Arizona.

 

Even in the City, you get these people with generational or cultural gaps that they just don't understand. I live near the City, so they hide their prejudices in a low tone. They hide it, then they say they don't care. But, they're not comfortable with it.
