Took a family-related trip to northeast Ohio this past weekend, and while we were there, we made a stop at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. Here are a couple random pictures.
This is Gatekeeper; it's a wing coaster (the seats are set to the sides of the tracks, rather than directly above or below). While it's not the fastest ride, it has a gimmick that works because the track layout is well suited to exploit the design of the trains. There are a lot of inversions throughout the ride, so you really get a sense of floating free from the track itself.
This is Millenium Force; when it debuted in 2000, it was the tallest and fastest coaster in the world. Now it's neither, but it still might be the best (consistently voted the #1 or #2 steel coaster in polls). It reaches a top speed of 93 mph (150 kph), and sustains something close to that speed for its entire duration (around two minutes).
This is Top Thrill Dragster; we actually didn't ride this one, because we were on something of a time constraint, and the line was enormous; also, it's basically a slightly smaller version of Kingda Ka in Jackson, NJ, which we've been on before, so we basically knew what it was going to be like. Both rides accelerate to over 120 mph (around 190 kph) in under four seconds. Until Kingda Ka debuted in 2005, Top Thrill Dragster was the tallest and fastest coaster in the world, but the duration is very short (under 30 seconds).
You may have thought that the Magnum XL200 was the name of a brand of condom, but in fact it's a coaster at Cedar Point. It's pretty tall (over 200 feet) and is not smooth sailing at all. The hangtime on this coaster feels like a punch to the gut. At one point it banks hard to the side, and I felt simultaneously like I was getting punched in the hip and also thrown out of the coaster altogether.
Last random thing: Here's a family of deer we saw outside of a relative's house I was at.
